On Syria, House GOP won’t follow their leaders On Syria, House GOP won't follow their leaders
Politico ^ | 9/3/13 | By JONATHAN ALLEN and JAKE SHERMAN

The whip count on Syria has become like the war itself: No one in Washington wants to own it alone.

While most top congressional leaders have vowed to back President Barack Obama in seeking authority to launch missile strikes, there’s little evidence that they can — or even want to — help him round up the rank-and file-Republicans he’ll need to win a vote in the House.

Speaker John Boehner’s spokesman said that he “expects the White House to provide answers to members’ questions and take the lead on any whipping effort.” Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), whose aides and allies run the whip process, isn’t yet in favor of Obama’s request for military authority in Syria.

Several lawmakers and aides who have been canvassing support say that nearly 80 percent of the House Republican Conference is, to some degree, opposed to launching strikes in Syria.

My congressman's office used a sorry excuse of "oh, he's still out in the district", "we haven't been updated on his stance".

Seriously? There's this little instrument called a cell phone, there's also fax machines, or, better yet...why not have him *tweet* his stance on the Syrian strike?

We need a roster of Name and Shame for all of the Reps.

Giving this team a congressional authorization for military force in Syria is like giving an arsonist a jumbo case of matches, an unlimited supply of gasoline and a truck load of molotov cocktails.

From GreenvilleOnline.com

U.S. Reps. Trey Gowdy and Jeff Duncan told constituents tonight that they’re glad President Obama decided to ask Congress before taking military action against Syria for alleged chemical attacks, but they both oppose sending U.S. forces into the civil war there.

Whatever happened to the UAR ?
We got this guy in the White House who likes to pop his mouth off and because of it people die. He picks on some poor security guard just doing his job. Shoots his mouth off because he sees an advantage to push items on his socialist agenda by painting a target on a supporters back. To which his supporters like good socialists they are spin tales of lies and falsehoods that wind up causing a race war in this country. The GOPES (gop Elite Snobs) so called political opposition leadership want to go along with this bad policy on Syria because they don’t wan’t to be blamed for this terrible idea. With the guard which affects the demographics they claim to be reaching out to blacks, hispanics and whites. They say nothing and can’t even call the political opposition for what they are socialist.

OPbama draws some line in the sand on some civil war thats going on in a region who’s outcome really doesn’t threaten US even though a former enemy which is going through its own stuggles has a naval base there. And now we’re supposed to support a military action which could cost American lives in the end....All because our fearless leader spoke ?

The only reliable intell comes from the Israelis and there are times they don’t know. We marched into Iraq the 2nd time thinking we’d be welcome with open arms because of it.Instead the aftermath turns out to be Christians out and Sunni’s in with the Kurds gaining some measure of independence.

But after the 1st dust up when we kicked Iraq out of Kuwait because of oil when the Kurds acted up and Hussain gassed them we did nothing. Now we get this high blown “democracy” b/s about an incident where very likely both sides are reverting to its use. As Syria itself is fragmenting into different identities. Kurdish, Alewite and Suni.

Who really doesn’t want that ? Turks for sure, the Saudis and the Shite principalities. Russia would be OK with it because of their naval base is in the Alewite area.

Now when the Syrians and the Russians start shooting back defending themselves because we’re shooting at them what else would you expect ?

Nuts

Report from Blue Hawaii as of 9:30pm Eastern time:

Sen. Schatz: will look at evidence - not yet decided
Sen. Hirono: in China & Korea on biz trip, but hasn't decided yet
Rep. Hanabusa: Wow! Not in favor - no legal justification, no national security interest (I must savor this one and only time she is thinking like a Constitutionalist)
Rep: Gabbard: Has headed back to DC for meetings - no statement yet, but she will be looking especially at the endgame of Obama's plan

I recommended to each of their secretaries to look closely at the situation in Libya, which we learn is utter collapse, and that we ask ourselves how we expect Syria to be any different

Gabbard’s statement

“Right now, we do not have enough facts about all facets of what is occurring on the ground, the factions involved in this civil war, and what the unintended consequences would be for U.S. military involvement. Congressional debate and approval must occur before any U.S. military action is taken, and through this process we need to have a clear-eyed view of our objectives and what the outcomes would be, understanding the impacts in Syria, and those that extend far beyond Syria.”

Sounds like a potential no.

Good work posting her statement - I was winging it from a conversation with her office staff. I would agree that she is a potential NO. I know her father Mike, a state senator, and he is one of only 2 senators to oppose homosexual marriage which the governor is attempting to push through at any moment. She served in the military, has more liberal positions than her dad, but I believe he will have an influence on her.

I think we might get a NO from Schatz too (though he’s in the senate, so it doesn’t matter). Hanabusa will club him with a pro-war vote in what is going to be the bloodiest rat primary in 2014.

80% isn’t very promising considering the democrats are 100%.

I wouldn't be so sure. The Democrat caucus in the House has its share of frothing anti-war moonbats. I don't know how many might go against Obama, but it won't be a unanimous vote in favor.

“Giving this team a congressional authorization for military force in Syria is like giving an arsonist a jumbo case of matches, an unlimited supply of gasoline and a truck load of molotov cocktail.”

That’s exactly what the Gulf of Tonkin resolution turned into. 50,000 American casualties later, the party that started the war, used it’s control over spending to make sure a war that had been won was then lost.

Letter from U.S. Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL)

The 2012 ACU rating of Spencer Bachus was >80%.

Spencer Bachus Writes BHO

August 29, 2013
The Honorable Barack H. Obama
President of the United States of America
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20500-0003

Dear Mr. President:

As the Administration considers options for responding to the events in Syria, I strongly urge you not to undertake any actions involving the use of our U.S. military without providing a full justification to Congress and the American people. It is important that such a presentation be made to Congress except in such cases when we are responding to aggression or an imminent threat against the United States and its interests.

While we all decry the atrocities in Syria and wonder how any regime could treat its people in cruel and inhumane ways, the terms of any potential U.S. military intervention have not yet been appropriately defined or limited. Among the central issues that must be addressed when it comes to the deployment of U.S. military personnel and materiel are the nature of the mission, its achievability and probable results, and its relation to our national security interests. In my view, I have not yet seen this case being made with regard to Syria.

As you know, both Article I of the Constitution and the War Powers Act invest Congress with considerable obligations when it comes to matters involving the use of military force. It is a legal and moral responsibility that I take most seriously and it is why I implore you not to undertake any precipitous action that would bypass our system of checks and balances. Please know that I am in support of Congress reconvening even before our scheduled return date if it is needed for you to present a full report to this body and the American people.

Sincerely,
Spencer Bachus
Member of Congress

A quick note to my Congressman, who has called for an immediate Congressional debate but is yet to go on record in opposition to U.S. military involvement. This is not the time for a fence-sitter.
