An Irmo family was shocked to come home to a note on their door explaining that a police officer had shot and killed their dog on Labor Day.

The police chief says the shooting was justified but the family says the action was excessive and unnecessary.

Four-year-old Kenya was a German Shepherd Lab mix. She's been known to roam her Irmo neighborhood from time to time. But her family says she's never gone far and never hurt anyone.

“”She was still moving 30 minutes later and I asked if I could take her to the vet and they said no,” said a neighbor. “And that’s when one of the police officers asked the other police officer to get a tarp and just covered her up.”

Despicable.

Negative.

There is no reason and no excuse for a dog owner to let their dog do anything off leash or unattended or both.

Doing so is inviting harm to the dog and to others.

They are to blame.

I have had to mace a few dogs in the face because of their idiot owners.

Others carry guns.

Don’t be a menace to your dog by being an inconsiderate and irresponsible jerk.

‘Irmo family unhappy officer shot and killed their dog’

Was the above story title used because the title,

‘Irmo family kicks off two week block party in celebration of the killing of their beloved pet dog’, was too long?

Escapes happen, otherwise none of us would have to keep posting “Lost dog” notices on FB or kepp trying to find homes for ‘strays’ who wind up in the pound.

NO fence/leash/kennel/door is 100% failsafe.

Even the best owner in the world can have a slip up.

If you did, how would you feel if a cop shot your ‘scary’ GSD?

I know I’d be absolutely gutted.

In the 1970’s, I had a German shepherd named Duke. He was incredibly intelligent and obedient, and he got along very well with our cats. We have pictures of the huge dog sleeping next to our tiny cat.

That is simple BS used to justify the cowardly actions of your cop friends. Every dog off a leash is not a threat and only a cowardly idiot thinks its ok to shoot any dog that comes their way off-leash. We live in a country full of dogs and their behavior is well understood by just about everyone but coptards who cant tell an attack from a warning bark. In fact what “invites harm” is training cops that it is acceptable to shoot ANYTHING that poses ANY level of threat. Finally, if you want to permanently turn the general public against the police, just keep up the unnecessary dog shooting BS.

It was a dog. The officer had a bullet. What more is there to say? It is better that police practice on dogs than on children.

I do not have a single cop friend, and I never have.

I am a dog lover.

Irresponsible dog owners are dangerous to dogs. I do not know if you know this, but a great many people are incredibly stupid and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near dogs.

The person who owned this dog is one of those.

That’s true that they do, however this dog was known to roam...therefore I am going to assume the owner failed to take proper measures or allowed this to occur as a matter of habit.

If a cop shot my dog because she got out, I would feel worse than I’ve ever felt, because I would feel responsible for it.

I am her keeper. She is my responsibility. If she got out because of a mistake I made and bit a child, that would be my responsibility.

Now, if a cop shot my dog because she was in her yard when he arrived at the wrong house...then I would feel fury.

According to a neighbor, the dog was still alive 30 minutes later but the cops refused to let the neighbor take him to the vet.

Any comments on the cops' behavior?

I cannot imagine any reasonable explanation for that at all, and at that point I’d say the cop should be charged with felony cruelty to animals.

Good point Ken. I’ll bet tho that a lot of the little dick fans of the steroided up jackboots will somehow let us all know that the poor suffering dog was STILL a threat.....thus they let it die. My God, when I was a kid, eons ago, the ‘beat’ cops were looked upon as the best men around. We loved ‘em! Now?....Just look what 70 years of the liberal indoctrination has taken us. NOBODY’S pet should be taken from them like this. I wonder what this steroided up thug punk might think if HIS doggy was assassinated......and then try to explain THAT to his children. This old boy is SO sick of these little dick Rambos running around with their wrong door ‘No Knock’ raids and killing pets. Where is it gonna end!!??

I live in crazy land where I have fences inside of fences.

It’s like a Supermax, here.

However, up until the early 90’s, I had no fences and my dogs stayed on their own land.

Ibizans changed all that and the fences came.

Those dogs can jump a 6’ fence from a standstill so my neuroses was born.

For 23 years, I have obsessed over secure fences, collars, leashes, harnesses, door locks, seat belts, windows...all of it.

Now, there’s the added angst of “what if?”, potentially involving some cop.

The world has gone mad and dogs and Christians seem to be preferred targets.

That is the part of the article I dearly wish I had not read.

Shot dead is bad enough...left to suffer in agony is simply reprehensible, soulless and egregious.

There is NO excuse for that.
