Thousands of Walmart employees are gearing up for a massive strike Thursday. Last week, fast food workers walked out on their jobs — demanding $15 an hour. Walmart employees are seeking similar wages.

In a Facebook post, the group, called OUR Walmart, says it is the “lifeblood” of the company and demands...

“Walmart, it’s time to reinstate Associates who have been unjustly fired. We’re ready to stand up until this happens and we, the Associates, are paid a wage we can live on.”

The group claims 500,000 employees are making less than $10 an hour and says the reality of the wages are much worse than many are led to believe.

More specifically, the group asking for change wants Walmart to....

Massive strike?

I don't think so. Looks like a few disgruntled clowns making a lot of noise. We shall see.

I’m sure that WalMart has lots of people that will be more than happy to fill in for the strikers, permanently.

Course, should be able to find a job at mickeyd’s also.

In fact, I can probably find two part time jobs.

things are looking pretty good!

The average wage for a full-time hourly employee at Wal-Mart is $12.57 an hour.

BTW, there is much ado at the third link about "70 illegally fired workers".

Folks, if you don't show up for work and don't have an acceptable excuse, you are going to be fired. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

I wouldn’t be so sure it’s a small strike. This will have union organizing skill and funds behind it.

I also hope it gets laughed outta town. These bozos have no understanding of economics.

Today, Walmart should have had its workers put up “Help Wanted” and “Now Hiring” signs.

Tomorrow, for everyone who strikes, fire them, and blacklist them so another Walmart cannot ever hire them.

I’d be willing to bet, most will be purple people beaters disguised as Wal-Mart workers.

SEIU, one of the most insipid unions. I guess if your IQ is that low you have to have a union to keep a job.

I doubt thousands are planning this. I know many friends that work at WalMart and are happy with thier wages. They have worked there for years and been given good raises. Some are managers now. Wal Mart is not a perfect place to work but it is better than most. If someone doesn’t like it, get a degree and move along.

When I got my MBA in 2007 I did my final paper on Wal-Mart because they publish all of their data. In 15 states they are the single largest employer. The average start age at the time was 40 and Wal-Mart was typically the first job that person got. Wal-Mart taught them how to work, how to act at work, to show up on time. On average the employees stayed slightly less than two years. By which time they had a resume, some skills and could get a better, higher paying job. The turnover at Wal-Mart, at the time, was half a million workers a year. That made Wal-Mart the jobs growth engine of the entire nation. If that turnover slows down then the job growth engine slows down too. There won’t be any entry level jobs. So, paying a higher wage and more benefits will damage the biggest job engine the country still has.

Wal-mart is so big that any single store is utterly insignificant. In fact, they could close down a hundred stores for a time as they train new people and not suffer any significant ill effects.

A store in Canada voted to go union, so they closed it.

That’s why they are so hated.

Being a former Walmart employee from a long time back, I can safely say that the company will not tolerate this and will be handing our pink slips and final paychecks to anyone who decided to strike. Walmart doesn’t play around with this kind of proto-union nonsense.

“The problem is with people who want to turn entry level crap jobs into a career.”

They quit school and all they can get is a crap job. Well, McDonald’s and Wal-Mart jobs were intended as entry level. Nobody said you could quit high school and raise a family on minimum wage. That’s why you get a minimum wage job in high school for spending money and some work skills. Then, you graduate, get further training at a university or technical school or the military and then get a real job.

Yes, there’s no way to support a family on an entry level job. But if you didn’t finish high school it’s nobody’s fault but yours.

A relative who works for the corporation tells me that if they strike the theft loss will plummet. Locally employees get fired for stealing regularly, only to be replaced by others whose only goal is to do the same. Most of the cashiers seem to be able to afford new SUV’s and hair/nail care while shopping with their EBT cards.

Yep. That’s not Wal-Mart or McDonald’s fault either. There should be some consequences. My mother said that some people were destined only to serve as horrible examples for the rest of us.

This will have union organizing skill and funds behind it.

There was an attempt a few years back to unionize the butchers that Wal-Mart had in their meat departments.

Wal-Mart decided to close all of them.

These dumb asses should think twice about what they are doing, they may wind up with no job at all.

Someone remarked on a Sultan Knish thread recently that America was founded on the principle of individual liberty. However, I think it's more useful to say that America was founded on the principle of individual responsibility, and when that principle was discarded, everything went blooooey.

A lot of people ... like ten of my children ... don't learn a thing until reality hits them upside the head with a brick (or the floor, for the baby). Gosh, that sounds like me!

The jobs at places like Walmart use to be filled by students, retirees and people looking for extra income. Today we see more and more of these jobs are being filled by people who are trying to support a family. That's what happens when the good jobs disappear. It will get even worse when the full force of obamacare hits the employers. All this damage is self inflicted by the stupid democrats and their piss-ant president.

I’m a skilled employee with many different certifications I had to study for and earn the privilege of the company schooling and paying for. The good news first. You don’t have to scrub floors and clean the rest rooms at WalMart ...unless you want to!

Bad news: you probably can’t get a second part time job if your first one is WalMart. The way they schedule you, you really don’t know what days you work and what days you don’t, until about 2 weeks in advance. Some weeks you’ll get Fridays off, some weeks you won’t. One day you’ll work 10 to 7, next day you’ll work 2 to 7pm. A computer will assign you a schedule and there’s not much you can do about it unless you want to be scheduled way less than part time.

Get the other job first, then tell WM you’re available 2 days a week.

But hurry. Every day another WM customer learns to do self-check.

PS the health benefits are for full time associates and there aren’t many of those around these days. WM has seen the handwriting on the wall (obamacare).

Walmart should have had its workers put up “Help Wanted” and “Now Hiring” signs.

They do. And I think I just now understand why the signs are usually posted on automatic doors where, if you get close enough to read them, they go sideways behind the glass wall where another sign hides them completely...

if everyone at wal-mart magically made 15 dollars an hour the cost of living would probably go up with it. You can’t pay everyone a live-able wage at a low skill part time position.

Having people line up to hand in their resumes should make those with jobs reconsider.

I have family working at Boeing and unions made unskilled jobs into 50 to 70 dollar an hour jobs where people literally do 1/4 of a job. These people, my family cannot fathom my small businesses. Their spending and work habits are like the low information voter. Just no clue how to make a dollar work and how that knowledge can generate so much pride and wealth. Working weekends? That should be illegal in their minds.

SEIU slobs tried to disrupt our Tea Party rally back in the spring of 2010 in Greenville, SC. We chased them into a building where they locked themselves inside. They were bawling for the cops to rescue them. The cops showed up - laughing their butts off - and escorted them from the area.

I worked as a “maintenance associate” at Walmart and made better money than most.

True, I had to clean up some nasty messes in the bathrooms but consoled myself by doing it all to the glory of God.

Also when I’d see the leftists acting up I would tell myself that my job was more socially useful than anything they ever did.

They are whistling past the graveyard in their ivory towers and it’s disgusting.
