OH:Oberlin gun ordinance to match Ohio law advances

OBERLIN — Brian Kuzawa, the Polk resident who carried his firearm into an Oberlin park, triggering a citywide debate on gun laws, met criticism from both residents and City Council Tuesday night.

Kuzawa expressed his opinion on why guns should be allowed on city property, but Sharon Fairchild-Soucy, vice-president of Council, responded that she did not feel safe in a city that allows guns.

“I want my grandson to grow up in a town where guns are not necessary, and I think I have the right to live in a protected environment where guns are not a factor,” she said to a round of applause.

Later, Kuzawa was stopped by two residents who were leaving the City Council meeting. One woman told Kuzawa that it was ironic that he said his gun could protect him when gun violence was rampant in the country.

“In a perfect world, I wouldn’t have to carry a firearm,” Kuzawa responded, shrugging.

The debate on the city’s gun laws began Aug. 2 when Kuzawa emailed Police Chief Tom Miller that he would be legally carrying his firearm in the park. He notified Miller that the city’s ban of firearms in municipal parks went against state law — something that is allowed under the Ohio Revised Code.

On Tuesday, city Law Director Jon Clark urged Council members to amend Oberlin’s ordinance to match state law, lest they face legal action.

State law allows for carrying firearms in public with the exception of some locations. Those who challenge any city ordinance that violates their right to bear arms could be awarded costs and reasonable attorney fees.

Four City Council members, albeit reluctantly, voted to amend the ordinance to state law during a second reading.

So, what steps has she taken to disarm the town police?

Does she believe that she has a right to lemonade springs and a big rock candy mountain, too?

It amazes me to what lengths these people are willing to go to, to disarm citizens. Their faith in the beneficence of the government is bizarre. Have they never read history? Have they ignored what has happened in the world in the last hundred years?

So, the City has to observe the Ohio Constitution, and they hate it.

I agree. So she should move to Havana immediately and take all her worthless progeny with her.

It’s called “magical thinking.” In other words, people such as Ms. Fairchild have no conception of the world as it actually is.

This is yet another example of the fact that liberalism is a mental disorder.

I'd like to live in a town where police, jails, flyswatters, mosquito repellent, mousetraps, and soap aren't necessary.

When an attack is imminent in seconds, the police are only minutes away.

Like everyone else, your grandson will be responsible for his own defense - so... you want him to use a big stick?

Sharon Fairchild-Soucy

Democrat of course. I think Democrats must have the ability to reason sucked out of their brains at an early age, and slogans along with a blind worship of government inserted to replace it. Presumably she was elected by a majority of the voters in her district which makes her a symptom of the disease rather than the disease itself.

Their faith in the beneficence of the government is bizarre

Not hard to understand at all. They consider themselves to be part of government - the oppressors rather than the opressed. Always better to be the concentration camp guard rather than the concentration camp inmate.

“The right to live in a protected enviroment where guns aren’t necessary”, there is so much stupidity in that statement that it would take an entire page to explain it. She must live on a Hollywood movie set.

I want my grandsons and granddaughters to grow up in a town where guns are accepted as a tool of food, fun, and freedom, and I think I have the right to live in an environment where the average citizen may be trusted to own, keep, and carry guns as the expected and responsible behavior of every trained adult.

I want to clarify something that Miss Miller missed in our interview... I ALSO said there IS no “perfect world,” hence my wife and I will continue to carry and protect our children as we see fit. We will also KEEP holding public entities to the same standards they expect US to follow, i.e. FOLLOWING THE LAW!

Then she had better make sure he doesn't grow up in any Liberal-run cities where crime and corruption are rampant and feral black yutes routinely terrorize everyone who is not their color.
