This is causing problems for a lot of ordinary US citizens because foreign banks just don't want the hassle of dealing with the US government and won't open accounts for any American.

It could be a false flag, the DOJ trying to scare depositors into moving money.

Just a thought, who really knows.

Not just Obama, the whole apparatus of the UN/EU/ICC, etc... we set up all these international treaties and agreements to stop terrorist financing, but it was only a matter of time before the governments decided to use that power against ordinary citizens trying to squirrel their assets away.

What exactly is an ‘asset’ anymore? If you work hard and earn money, your money is taxed when you earn it, taxed if you spend it, taxed if you successfully invest it, and taxed if you try to pass it on to your children. If you buy property, you pay taxes on it, and have little control anymore to what heights those taxes can and will rise, and the government can confiscate your property (with minimal compensation) on the basis of ‘eminent domain’. If you just save it, its worth decreases every time the government prints more worthless paper. And in the end, you are really trusting in a system (the American economy) that could implode, making whatever your bank statements say currently essentially meaningless numbers. Ultimately, the legitimacy and strength of any economy is very much dependent upon the trust put into it by the citizens whom it is designed to serve. How confident is anyone at this point in the stability of our economy?

Dirty Big Secret. Swiss bank officials? IRS stooges, most willingly, others by cyber snooping. Swiss accounts have been yesterday's hiding place for over a decade! Secret Swiss Bank Account? LOL. Might as well take out a billboard on the freeway, dude.

Got money to hide? Try Austria, Lichtenstein, Cayman Islands, Jersey, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Curaçao, and keep it moving. Best of luck. Talk to Bill Clinton.

There are also the super secret Muslim money shifting networks that date from medieval times, Chinese 'banks,' etc. etc. Know nothin' about them ... but sure would like to.

I don’t think Saudi banks cooperate with IRS.

Of course, if you’re a politician and you hide your money there, they own you I suspect.

And like you, I suspect Chinese banks probably do not cooperate either. With the same proviso for politicians who keep their money there.

I seem to recall Clinton expended a lot of energy going after banking secrecy in all the usual havens, Panama, Caymans, Switzerland, but never Saudi Arabia. So I concluded that that was where he kept his money. (I know, that’s just me).

Switzerland is a safe haven despite any type of disclosure they may or may not agree to with the US authorities. Their political stability, financial stability (not part of the EU and the monetary union) and their recognition as one of the best business environments in the world will continue to prove to be factors in why money is deposited there.

The tax evaders and mafioso types will need to find other locales to hide their money.

I guess, in light of all that, an “asset” nowadays is whatever you have that the government doesn’t know you have. Of course, if they find out you have it, then it would become a “liability” pretty quick.
