Fighting raged through the picturesque mountain village of Maaloula, near Damascus, on Thursday, as the regime launched a counter-attack against the rebels.
"They entered the main square and smashed a statue of the Virgin Mary," said one resident of the area, speaking by phone and too frightened to give his name. "They shelled us from the nearby mountain. Two shells hit the St Thecla convent."
Maaloula, tucked into the honey-coloured cliffs of a mountain range north of Damascus and on a "tentative" list of applicants for Unesco world heritage status, is associated with the earliest days of Christianity.

Haven’t you heard what Kerry said - there’s no al-Quaeda among the rebels, only good guys. Nothing will stop us from helping those freedom-minded warriors to topple Assad.

This is heartbreaking for me. Four years ago I visited Maaloula. I saw a few of the nuns and the orphans who are cared for at the convent. An ancient holy place now being destroyed.
For all his faults Assad protected the Christians.
Yeah, it was only after the KLA terrorists took over the Albanian rebels in Kosovo did Clinton decide to bomb Christian civilians. Now BO is doing the same thing in Syria — help muslim terrorists and hurt whatever side defends Chrsitians.
Aramaic is not a dead language. Yet. Give them a couple more months.

For years I’ve heard that “only a small percentage of muslims hate us” but we have to fight them. Now we’re going to help that same 15%.
