Obama has no 'intention' to strike Syria if Congress says no, says aide

Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News 35 minutes ago

Will President Barack Obama order military strikes on Syria even if Congress rejects using force? Asked that hugely consequential question on Friday, a senior White House official strongly suggested that the answer is no.

“The president, of course, has the authority to act. But it’s neither his desire, nor his intention, to use that authority absent Congress backing him,” Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken told NPR.

Blinken’s comments lent weight to a New York Times report published Friday that cited unnamed officials as saying that Obama views going to war if Congress says no as “almost unthinkable” – and even a potential trigger for impeachment proceedings against him. Blinken also played down the prospects that American military strikes on Syria would result in retaliatory attacks against America by Syria or its patron Iran or the Iran-aligned Hezbollah Islamist militia – but could not completely rule it out.

“We spend a lot of time, when we think about these things, trying to game out every possible contingency, every possible unintended consequence. And no one can give you a 100% guarantee,” he told NPR.

“We work to make sure that If anyone tries to do anything to escalate, we’re in a position to respond -- but our best assessment, including by our intelligence community, is that none of these countries have an incentive to pick a fight with the United States,” the official said.

I think when push comes to shove, the House will vote for war (as will the Senate).

You are likely wrong. The House is shaping up as a solid NO, and with the introduction of nuclear weapons into Syria by Russia... well, even the Globalist NWO-types don't want to see their children on fire.

For those of us that have raised children and grandchildren:

Since when does a five-year old who really, really, REALLY wants that toy give up?

IMHO The Emperor’s behaviors over the last five years more closely resembles a five-year old than an adult. This means he will not take his bat and ball home quietly when he isn’t selected for the team.

"I wouldn’t put it past O to strike before Congress has a chance to vote."

I was thinking the same thing. He could avoid an embarrasing NO vote from congress, and salvage some of his whimpy handling of this issue.

He just said as much in his press conference—that he couldn’t honestly claim there was an imminent threat against the US and its allies.

Then he referred again to “my military”—arrgh!

Unless I greatly misunderstood, Obama just now said that he went to Congress because he didn’t have the authorization to strike Syria on his own because they don’t pose an immediate threat to US security!

Barry has been looking for a way out of this since the beginning when he opened his idiotic trap about a red line. He’ll now be able to blame Congress for it.

This is “leading from the curb”.

If I were a betting man, I would say they will NOT vote to give Obammy authority to start another international adventure.

Always look for the key word. In this piece, the keyword is “intention”.

The lying liars know how to word them.

Look at them trying to take the high road. They do things so very properly, with such respect for the Constitution, and such a high level of difficulty too, why it’s like watching a napkin folding act in Cirque du Soleil.

I hadn't looked at stories on the House for that last couple of days; now that I have, I must admit it's looking better than I initially thought.

“LOL. More propaganda. Obama knows that he must maintain this kabuki theater until the votes are cast. He can’t declare the vote by Congress to be meaningless and say he will proceed even if Congress votes no.”

I could see him saying that as usual, congress doesn’t see the urgency in this. Then he will tie it to the debt ceiling and budget.

And the MSM will coo how courageous Obama is for his leadership.

Quite possibly obama hopes you are wrong too.

What could go wrong if he bombs Syria? So much. What could go right? Hmm..

Human shields all over the place in a region that practically invented lying. If by some miracle he fails to hit a school or a hospital, they'll just have to improvise and...well, craft a video that'll set the world on fire, like that guy Notcoola Notcoola.
