The speaker of Russia's national legislature said Friday that a plan to send a parliamentary delegation to Washington to try and convince U.S. lawmakers that a unilateral military intervention in Syria would be unwarranted and counterproductive had been cancelled.
Sergei Naryshkin, speaker of the State Duma, said the delegation would no longer travel to the U.S. and called the decisions by House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to refuse to meet their Russian counterparts deplorable.
Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson confirmed Thursday that Reid had turned down the offer. Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said the speaker had also declined the offer.
"We are really disappointed by their decision not to meet with their Russian colleagues," said Russian Embassy spokesman Maxim Abramov on Thursday after the U.S. congressmen made their decisions public.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the delegation on Monday.
Meanwhile, Russia's government-linked news agencies quoted senior military officials as saying two more of the country's warships were headed for the Mediterranean, near Syria's western coast.
The RIA-Novosti agency said two ships from Russia's Black Sea Fleet, the frigate Smetlivyi and the landing ship Nicholai Filchenkov, an electronic surveillance vessel, were ready to head to the region, according to a high-ranking source in the defense ministry. Russian news agencies said at the end of August that the navy was dispatching an anti-submarine ship and a missile cruiser to the Mediterranean.
Russia has a military base on Syria's west coast at Tartus, and has been slowly increasing its naval presence in the region...

Obama settin’ up da bomb!!. FUBO!! No American blood and treasure for the Muslim Brotherhood!!
What is Putie planning? The Battle of the Mediterranean?
Putin: No more talk. Time for action.............
Mega bump, sir.
Off to war for Al Qaeda
Do you think Putin would actually do this? Don't get me wrong, the Russians have a much larger contingent of readily-accessible warships in the region, but would they seriously ignite that region if America fired on Syria?
Several things are going to hit the fan here soon.
Obamacare with massive hikes in premiums
World War III
Time for prayer.
Military deployments speak a lot lounder and send a clearer message than political delegations. Just sayin...
Time for another vacation and more GOLF!.............
I WANT to think Putin got wind of the sense that we'll be takin' care o'business in this country ... we don't want you here.
And that’s just the “short list” of problems. A lot of black swans appearing on the lake all of a sudden.
You’re saying that if America pulls the trigger that it would be Russia igniting the region!?!
“Obamacare with massive hikes in premiums
World War III
Time for prayer.”
No argument. Cept that you might want to rearrange that list a bit. :)
Why should we be testing him? We have nothing to gain, everything to lose.
“Do you think Putin would actually do this? Don’t get me wrong, the Russians have a much larger contingent of readily-accessible warships in the region, but would they seriously ignite that region if America fired on Syria? “
I’m not sure. Russia is not the military might they once were but they are no weak sister either. They could make a great big mess outta things. I think Putin has Barry’s number. I don’t think Russia wants a war but at the same time Syria is a major ally of theirs..........imagine if Russia committed airstrikes on Poland. What would you expect us to do?
It’s one big damn cluster right now.
I’m not saying we should! We shouldn’t be in the region in such force to begin with except to protect the remaining military assets in Iraq and for backup to Israeli defenses.
I cannot fathom what Obama thinks he’s going to gain by poking the Russian bear.
the Russians have a much larger contingent of readily-accessible warships in the region
The eastern Mediterranean is not a good “venue” for us. I think the chess playing Putin has the upper hand here and is probably several steps ahead of The Amateur.
IMO this is what caused Pee Wee to suddenly put the brakes on his little adventure.
Reagan broke Gorbachev and ended the Soviet Empire. I don't think Reagan did that with animosity, but he saw his chance, he felt that it would help his country and the world, and Reagan went for it.
I don't think Putin is feeling emotional or vengeful. I'm not implying any "payback".
But I think Putin sees a chance to break Obama and end America as world military power. I don't think Putin would do this out of animosity, but he sees his chance, he feels it would help his country and the world, and I think Putin will go for it.
I see ZERO chance that Obama will take this to a very high level. Obama will cut and run and only Russia and her allies will be left on the field -- America may not recover for generations.Putin sees the chance, and I think he will maneuver Obama into a grand mistake. There will be an exchange of weapons and some loss of life, but it will fall short of WWIII.
Obama doesn’t think. He reacts. He’s furious with Putin for questioning his greatness and his brilliance as the Messiah.
“but would they seriously ignite that region if America fired on Syria? “
They have a weak, spineless, US President trapped in a box created by his own mouth. They sure as hell would, this is a MAJOR chance to restore Russian prestige.
They know he is looking for a way out now, and intend to keep pressing him.
Putin just doesn’t fear the wildly biased, gay-run US Media, like so many others do.
If this is the case, Obama will go down in history as the most arrogant idiot the world has ever seen.
He has to be getting intel from the Pentagon and his military advisors telling him to chill out with the sabre rattling, but he just keeps poking the hornet's nest.
No, but I think he has Obama completely pegged and is going to send what's left of the Black Sea Fleet to play high-states chicken with the U.S. Navy's 6th Fleet.
Now if Putin orders the Northern Fleet to sail out of Severomorsk and Polyarnyy to join the fuzzball, including the carrier Kutsenov and the big battle cruiser Peter the Great, then look out! He means business.
I think that the “Monkey with a grenade” calculated insult is what is driving Obama’s reactions now.
I cannot fathom what Obama thinks hes going to gain by poking the Russian bear.
The Russian bear is showing its formidable teeth and claws. The frightening this is that Obama clearly has no idea what kinds of hideous consequences could come about from his little face-saving adventure.
Congress desperately needs to reign him in. Right now, before this thing gets totally out of hand.
First of all, thanks, Jim for giving me a place to go to find out what intelligent Amrericans are thinking.
Amazing that Putin suggested this. Apparently he isn’t kidding around but, unlike obama, he has the sense not to go out in public and make threats.
We don’t know everything that was said between obama and Putin. But whatever it was, Putin started moving more military resources.
I have an uncle in Murmansk who works in the shipyards there. He’s been completely incommunicado since March. No one in the family, even his daughter living in NYC, has heard from him. They’re concerned that the military has been on lockdown.
Apparently congress “clearly has no idea what kinds of hideous consequences could come about from his little face-saving adventure.”
I think Putin is quietly reminding Obama that you don’t have to put boots on the ground to place Americans in harm’s way. You can’t expect to just sit back and lob missiles without endangering the troops. Putin has resources at his disposal that can send US warships to the bottom. And I don’t think he fears Obama. Worse. I don’t think he respects him. At all.
Bay of Pigs, part deuz...”Russian Roulette”.
Russia is testing the resolve of Obama to use nuclear weapons in the event the Russians used theirs first.
I’ve always believed that if it came down to it, and the Russians launched, Obama wouldn’t fire back.
Perhaps Putin is putting that theory to the test.
Obama isn’t Kennedy, and this time the Russians have ample evidence as to the man’s behaviors in office. Khrushchev didn’t have that luxury. He underestimated Kennedy. There is no risk of underestimating Obama at this point, only overestimating him.
But I think Putin sees a chance to break Obama and end America as world military power.
Certainly a golden opportunity for a “game changer” from Putin’s perspective. Obama is weak and indecisive and is unable to garner international or UN support. Odds right now seem to be in Putin’s favor. The next president might not be such an easy pushover.
Putin has been delt a strong hand to play. Obama is on the verge of folding.
He undoubtedly had diplomatic advisers who explained the proper way to greet and socialize with politically inert but culturally powerful figureheads like the Emperor of Japan and the Queen of England too. But The Won doesn't need any advice. He learned everything he needs to know about the world while growing up on the backstreets of Jakarta.
He’s like an obstinate child: “You’re not the boss of me!”
He is building up and utilizing modern military equipment and manpower to protect Russian interests, much like Reagan did when Americans were detained and held captive in Grenada.
Meanwhile, 0bama is half-assing everything. He subsequently endangers American lives, threatens general stability in the middle east and continues to further polarize both friend and enemy alike.
Militarily speaking, 0bama is a feckless, weak and narcissistic idiot and loser. He is quite probably the most dangerous man alive when one considers all the senseless death and destruction he can potentially create right now.
If any of our ships are sent to the bottom of the sea, obama and everyone in congress who voted for this should be arrested. Sacrificing American blood just to halp obama save face is flat out treason.
Let me get this: Boner and Dingy REFUSE to speak to the Russians?
Am I the only one getting the feeling that war in Syria is a done deal from a smoky backroom??
Off the grid here I come. Hunting, fishing, raise a few cattle, large garden, canning.
Figure it will take about 3-5 months to get there but wheels are turning now. God help us all.
Unfortunately your statement is frighteningly accurate. Something almost all of us on this board knew before he won his first presidential election. The Progressives have delivered us into the hand of insanity.
Other than that, he's a great military man. --Norman Schwarzkopf
May be on the verge of folding. Yet, he’s such an idiot he may go all in on a bluff. I think Putin has a read on him.
Obama isnt Kennedy, and this time the Russians have ample evidence as to the mans behaviors in office. Khrushchev didnt have that luxury.
Krushchev did witness Kennedy’s Bay of Pigs fiasco early on in the president’s administration. And it was a fiasco of the first order. Krushchev concluded from that failure that Kennedy was weak and could be pushed. That of course led to the Cuban Missile Crisis which nearly triggered WWIII.
The point is, weakness invites agression. Always has, always will. And it can also lead to dangerous miscalculations.
I believe that Putin has measured Obama and found him to be weak. Other heads of state have apparently also come to the same conclusion as Obama can’t persuade them to follow him on his reckless adventure. Putin stands to win big if he plays his cards right.
If so, O’Bummer’s gonna be in for the shock of his life. He’s a military genius in the same sense that Hitler was a military genius. And the same bear is likely to bust his chops.
So long as American troops don’t try and storm the gates of Leningrad...
I found that to be one of the most disturbing bits of new information in this article too. Apparently they won't even make a pretense of trying to negotiate a resolution.
Intentionally? Maybe or maybe not. I think probably not.
Unintentionally? Errors can happen, look who America voted for...twice.
Exactly! Save the testing for Iran or North Korea. Not on Syria and for the sole purpose of Obama saving face.
This whole situation is fascinating from a tactical perspective, but it is like watching the ‘98 Yankees play a little league team. Putin has Obama completely snookered, and Obama doesn’t even know what the game is. No matter what happens from here forward, Russia looks to gain a tremendous amount, while our position in the most critical region of the world has taken a heavy hit. It isn’t just Syria. Assuming Libya and Egypt return to not-as-malevolent-as-MB dictatorships, who is Mubarak v2.0, and others like him, going to turn to for protection?
