Albert Einstein. George Takei. Jerry Garcia.
All of those men and many others have had an asteroid named after them. And if William Lowell Putnam III, trustee of Lowell Observatory, has his way, another name will be added to that list: Trayvon Martin. The retired broadcast executive, alpinist, author and Flagstaff resident believes that Martin has not received justice.
It was an unusually warm night at Anderson Mesa south of Flagstaff on Oct. 2, 2000, when Lowell Observatory astronomers found the asteroid 2000 TM61. It was just one of hundreds that observatorys researchers discovered as part of their search for Near Earth Asteroids.
The minor planet was placed into a catalog and forgotten until shortly after Martin, 17, was fatally shot in Sanford, Fla. The unarmed teens death sparked nationwide protests and renewed the race debate in America.
It also sparked disgust with Putnam.
As I see it, the social fairness showed to Trayvon Martin was very sadly lacking, he said. Inasmuch as I am the sole trustee of an institution which has some naming privileges, I want to do my share to see that this lad is remembered in an appropriate manner.

If they can find an asteroid that’s primarily made of lead, I’m all for it.
They need an asteroid that erratically changes path and strikes other asteroids.
assrhoids
Since they named an amphibious transport after slimeball congressman John Murtha, obviously anything goes now.

Fair enough. A dead rock hurtling through space mindlessly on a self-destructive collision course with unknown worlds. Makes perfect sense.
Unfortunaely I don't think there are any recently discovered black holes, which might have been more appropriate.
Let's think about this drama queen for a moment. Anyone with "III" after his name has got to be one.
I would admire his honesty and empathy a lot more had he simply done it and kept his other hole shut.
With his grasp of reality, it would not surprised me if he quietly has already named other asteroids after Hitler, Pol Pot, Caligula and Vlad the Impaler...
Oh go ahead and do it, Putnam. Then name a comet for Zimmerman.
My proctologist wants to name a hemorrhoid after Trayvon Martin.
I have a hemorrhoid that I named after Trayvon.
Yes, let's show a proper respect for the "unarmed teen" who was shot because he tried to grab George Zimmerman's pistol so he could shoot Zimmerman.
Why not name the asteroid using Trayvon's own eloquent last words? Let's call the asteroid "You're gonna die tonight, motherf*****!" Sounds socially fair to me.
This cant be serious. Satire, right?
Funny - they claim they want justice and fairness, but hate that Trayvon got justice and fairness...
I honestly feel that so many of these guys (Lowell, Sharpton, Ben Jealous, and so on) are bitter that they werent around when there were actual civil rights issues to fight for. So, today, they just make up civil rights issues today so that they can fashion themselves as some sort of civil rights leader, pretend that theyre more moral than others, and pat themselves on the back and blow-up their importance in their head.
Just yesterday while going through the checkout line there’s a Time Magazine with one of those Zeus-like photos of MLK and the headline was “Founding Father”. Give me a break.
Human beings need myths - they provide a rallying point and a way of capturing a certain ideology or worldview. And of course the media is only too happy to play the role of the amplifier and the repeater.
Through the lens of the internet and the twittersphere we are literally watching the creation of a myth just like the Nazis did with Horst Wessel.
What are these future Native-black Savages trying to prove?
I completely agree with you. So many past events taught in schools and the media as “the evil white man vs. the innocent black man” were likely a lot more complicated, and I’d bet that in most incidents (as was the case in the Zimmerman matter) the narrative we get from the media is an intentional lie to create a civil rights myth.
Nevermind that, they need to name an ASS after him.
