It is very possible that the president will not obtain a join authorization to bomb Syria; if he chooses to go ahead and attack anyway, Obama will incite a constitutional crisisthe first time in history that a president has decided to go to war against the declared wishes of Congress. The public and the courts will adjudicate the legality of that act, and it would be contentious.
So the corner that Obama has painted himself into is now inescapable. Defying Congress will put the country into a Watergate/Monicagate mess. Not doing anything will confirm the administrations impotence and only enhance Russia, Iran, Assad, China, Islamists, and almost anyone else who does not like the U.S. Doing something small, with or without congressional approval, will be looked upon as a cynical waste of human lives to restore Obamas credibility, the sort of craven, immoral political act that a younger Obama made a career out of mocking. Doing something big will invite public and global outrage if only moderately successful, and doom the Obama presidency if unsuccessful.
How did Obama get himself into this mess? It was bound to happen, given his past habits. All we are seeing now is the melodramatic fulfillment of vero possumus, lowering the rising seas, faux Corinthian columns, hope and change, the bows, the Cairo speech, and the audacity of hope. Hubris does earn Nemesis.
1) His inclination is to damn straw men, blame others for his self-inflicted errors, and spike the ball when he should keep quiet and become modest (cf. the bin Laden raid). So in Syria we heard the same old, same old: A host of bad guys, here and abroad, wants to do nothing.

I thought you said unemployment .. so I signed up ... waitin' for my first check ... sorry ... start without me
“Congress - I don’t need no steenking congress!”
Spot on, VDH. He lays out some very reasonable paths for 0bama(which, in his arrogance and petulance, will likely ignore.) And the last few sentences should be heeded by all.
As usual a very good essay.
"Psychodrama" .... good way to describe it. Rush was talking 'pathic' and 'psychopathic' the other day. It's catching on and not necessarily from folks who listen to Rush or read VDH ... I'm hearing it more and more on talk radio from very angry and serious Americans calling in, that Obungle is a mental head case.
There is no Constitutional crisis. Is fully within Congressional powers to pull funding. The President can order a strike Congress can simply choose not to fund it. The problem is that Congress has been reluctant to use such powers. Congressional backbone crisis? Yes. Constitutional crisis? Hardly.
I’m thinking we’re Wagging The Dog here but haven’t figured out why yet. Time will tell.
The one thing that worries me, is his out of control ego, and arrogance. Putin is personally embarrassing him on the world stage, and now other leaders are starting to join in. He loves talking about boots on necks, and whose ass to kick, but now we have the world laughing at him. We have all seen how thin his skin is, and I wonder where this will lead?
Oh yes........ Soon to be herd from Obama...... “Nevermind”

Competence has never been Zero’s strong suit.
Putin can do the world and the US a favor by embarrassing Obama more. The true Obama needs to be revealed to the half of the country that adores him. Perhaps only a foreigner like Putin can or will do it.
Point #3, re
“Obama’s revolving carousel of idiots” is right on. And this has been a loooooong time in the making!!
Looks like Obama’s incompetence, laziness, and passing-the buck-attitude have finally caught up to him so bad, even his Media buddies can’t spin it this time.
Now there’s no honorable way out for him. Good.
Competency is racist, sexist, and homophobic.
He is very, very dangerous because it’s all about him. Americans getting killed won’t be a consideration or bother him one bit .... and for anyone who thinks this is harsh, look at Benghazi .... 4 Americans dead and he’s apparently not concerned, nor could he be bothered to stick around to find out the details .... playing cards with Reggie, then took off for Vegas the next day. Per the grieving relatives, he was a cold fish with them. GW would have been right there, not slept all night, and I think AQ would still be licking their wounds if this had happened on his watch.
I believe Obama has said in response to questioning “I’M the PRESIDENT” and he will wield his ‘power’ and authority to suit himself, not for the greater good of the country. This goes hand in hand with his “I WON” mentality. One thing about Bush, perhaps even Bubba Clinton* ... I didn’t worry about them destroying the country deliberately or starting WWIII because of ego, but with Obama, I do.
*Bill/Hillary are awful, but they are greedy first and foremost and I don’t think they’d kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs. Look at what Obungle has done - got America on her knees domestically and trying hard to put that boot on her neck.
Last line of the article.
We’re where we’re at because by using outright lies and deception through a radical black socialist, Obama, the communusts and the socialists took over a political party and proceeded to dismantle traditional values (while the political oppositiion says nothing) by declaring wars on;
The family, babys ,light bulbs, suburbans, suburbia, home gardens, cheap gas, ,home schooling, voucher programs, Christian schools, home repair, coal, oil, nat gas, pipelines, Catholics, entry level jobs, for starters. Through outright fabrication and miss-representation has black youths engaged in a race war on white and hispanics.
He’s only in this mess because the entire world is racist.
From the comments:
Blacksaint-We needed a bigger-than-life President we got a Dope smoking, Coke snorting, Radical Left wing Chicago thug that has spend his life surrounded and tutored by American hater,s, terrorist and Marxist!
We needed a well-grounded stable President we got a certifiable narcissist.
We needed bold leadership we got a teleprompter
We needed a seasoned hand we got a hand in in our pockets
We needed a champion for American citizens... and respect for for the Makers instead we got a champion for the Takers and uneducated horde of invading Illegal Aliens
We needed a skilled bridge builder we got a class-warfare specialist and inciter-in-chief.
We needed practical, proven policies we got socialist dogma and monumental waste
First class leaders want firstclass help; Second class leaders want third class help.
if he goes through with it, he will damage the presidency almost beyond repair.
For years and years, the democrats did whatever they could to damage the the government and people’s view of the presidency. They did all this just to gain a few seats so they could impose their world view on the other 80% of the country. They made it their business, wrote books, attended movies and even entertained conspiracy theories to undermine the office.
I’m not sure the media can undo this debacle. What this charade proves is that a plurality of the people (43%) might “like” Obama or think “he’s cool” but nobody trusts him or his government. They spend my entire adult lifetime and untold millions of dollars telling anyone that would listen that you can’t trust “the man” and now those chickens are coming home to roost.
I’m frustrated with the title of this article, and I hope VDH didn’t write it. It should be “If it WEREN’T Syria...” Geeesh! Don’t they teach English anymore?
Otherwise, I agree with the good professor’s premise.
VDH is da man.
This is a proper skewering.
Deployment? I thought you said unemployment.
LOL! Good post.
Imagine the humiliation BO would experience (if that's possible) if for the first time in history an "outraged global community" demands the forfeiture of his cherished Nobel "Peace" Prize ?
just saying ...
Yeah, I guess my fear is, does he come home and beat the wife, and kick the dog because he can’t stand up for himself at work? Time will tell, but Putin is definitely up to something.
The Nobel ‘Peace’ prizes are for the greater part just a sham now anyway. It was so telling that the committee bestowed one of their prizes on a fraud who had zero actual accomplishments in life, other than two autobiographies fabricating a persona, written by someone else, in both cases!
I think omoslem may use the congress as an excuse to crawl back from the precipice.
Omoslem moved his bishop to attack a rook and Putin moved his pieces in place to not only threaten the loss of the bishop but way more besides. Omoslem needs to move the bishop back and I think that the congress will provide the cover for doing just that.
He looks really bad. He takes ages to answer the questions and does not really answer them. He looks small, weak, perhaps even sickly. It is truly painful to watch and I do not like this guy. I have no idea how the MSM dealt with this, I do not have television.
The Saudis have put a lot of money into this country, and now they want a favor in return.
I absolutely love this paragraph!!!
Victor writes “ Obama cannot attract top talent. Those from prior administrations who are gifted and worked for him or who were promoted by himRobert Gates, David Petraeus, Paul Volcker, Richard Holbrooke, James Mattis, Stanley McChrystaleither were treated badly, not fully utilized, or ended up regretting their experience. Instead a host of mediocrities are recruited on the basis of either their partisanship, loyalty or demonstrated past lightnessan Eric Holder, Joe Biden, Susan Rice, Timothy Geithner, Chuck Hagel, etc. “
"Ahh, but the Red Line that's... that's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and with... geometric logic... that a duplicate Red Line drawn by the rest of the world DID exist, and I'd have produced that Red Line if they hadn't of pulled the Syria resolution out of action. I, I, I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow congressmen...
He comes off as a dullard in that.
A dullard? Yes. The question is, is he unravelling?
I heard it was a bad presser .... in fact, that he was embarrassing. No TOTUS was part of the problem - he’s TOTally dependent on it. My personal opinion is that there is drug use and his handlers (VJ in particular) make sure he’s functional by giving him certain drugs at at the right time. First debate with Romney was a miscalculation. Tin foil hat stuff, but the more I ‘see’, the more I believe it.
I’d like to see Putin change his middle name, from Vladimirovich to “Nemesis.”
The drug thing has been around for years. It would not surprise me.
We live in very dangerous times.
Probably so. I’ve thought all along he is psychopathic, a narcissist of the worst kind. What slays me is how all his sycophants are so narcissistic on his behalf. That’s crazy as well. How no one there could see this Syria bombing would have very little support is beyond me. And when someone with his mental illness runs into that the results can be very bad.
The people around him are hero worshippers. They believe in his cult of personality.
They live in a bubble and have no idea of the reality outside that bubble. Congress will vote down this war on Syria. I do not think he will go ahead with it.
Of course, I didn't think he would get elected, TWICE!
IMHO Obama will not attack if there is a no vote. That was the whole point. If its no he can blame the Republicans, regardless of how many Democrats vote against. He will say they have undercut the credibility of the USA, dont care about gassed civilians, and anything that happens in Syria is their fault. If they vote yes, then when it goes bad he can say it was bipartisan. Either way, its not my fault, which is always Obamas first concern.
I don’t think that will work this time. He may have pulled that off had he and his lackeys not been out front pushing the war so hard.
Good column, but it presupposes that Obama is an incompetent dullard. Suppose that Obama or his handlers planned it this way to assure that no matter what happens, the US is damaged to the maximum extent possible. This is only the latest incident, but Obama can always be counted on to side with the most radical Islamists against the US and to make each decision to weaken the US.
VDH hits this one out of the park!
After five years of this, the world caught on, and sees juvenile and narcissistic petulance in lieu of statesmanshipand unfortunately a sinister Putin takes great delight in reminding 7 billion people of this fact almost daily. In terms of geostrategic clout, Obama has nullified the power of his eleven aircraft-carrier battle groups, Putin through his shrewd insight and ruthless calculation of human nature, has added five where they didnt exist.
Just suffice it to say that everything Obama touches quickly devolves into a cluster-f**k. The idiots in this country elected a boy with no experience to do a real man’s job. A guy who’s only real ‘talent’ is in the art of rhetorical bombast.
Can we survive this phony presidency? I hope so but I wouldn’t take bets on it.
Democrats should turn on him and show him the door before it all comes crashing down on everyone.
Because Nikita Khrushchev perceived John Kennedy to be timid and indecisive he was emboldened to site nuclear missiles in Cuba. The U.S. and USSR almost went to war. Vladimir Putin must now be pondering Obama’s likely reaction to a swarm of Russian ICBMs arcing over the Pole.
