Analysis: Obama won't say it, but vote on Syria has high stakes for his presidency
Reuters ^ | Sept 7, 2013 | By Roberta Rampton and Caren Bohan

(Reuters) - It seems that everyone in Washington is talking about it except President Barack Obama: When Congress votes on the administration's request to use military force in Syria, the future of his presidency could well be on the line.

A defeat, a distinct possibility, would hobble Obama in affairs both foreign and domestic, particularly if fellow Democrats collaborate in it.

It will hurt him at a critical juncture, as he confronts not only Syria, but the nuclear activities of Iran and North Korea, another round of battles with Republicans over fiscal issues, an immigration bill, and a possibly difficult nomination fight over a new chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Using Obama's presidency as an argument as Congress ponders a resolution authorizing military action is off-limits for the administration - it would make the debate about Obama and cost the president votes from some Republicans he is counting on.

"My credibility is not on the line," Obama said at a news conference in Stockholm on Wednesday, five days after he announced he would seek congressional authorization for a strike on Syria over an August 21 chemical weapons attack in that country.

"The international community's credibility is on the line. And America and Congress' credibility is on the line."

ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

But if ever there was an "elephant" in a room, the Obama legacy is it.

A 'no' vote would be a "catastrophe" for Obama...

Wait for it.

I made the call yesterday, that he won't launch.

Reuters has another story casting doubts upon the intel. There are some escape hatches.

Mistake after mistake, blunder after blunder multiplied by a corruption factor never before seen and yet, the media will spend years, maybe decades portraying him as the greatest president ever because of his race.

I wonder how they care going to manage to stock archives in his library that leave a favorable legacy. I can't imagine what it might be like if he tries to build one. Could he be the first president since Roosevelt to not have a library?

It is still unbelievable to me that we have such amateur in the Presidency. If the “One” was even contemplating establishing “a red line”, before he announced it, why didn’t he round up domestic and international support (if any existed), before he started flapping his lips? Either the State Department or the “One” or both are incompetent in putting our reputation on the line like this.

He has no shame. Not only will he play golf but he and that wife of his will do nothing but spend other people’s money for the next 3 1/2 years And if they do nothing but that it’ll be good for America, though watching libs and the media enable it will be nauseating

We need to somehow make sure that Boehner doesn’t cancel the vote to try to save anybody’s face on this one.

A no vote might cause Obama to back away, but all it means is the Saudis just need to bribe more US government officials.

The few real conservatives that can't be bought will be opposed and undermined by a big (Saudi) money RINO GOP-E until there are too few to stop a use of force resolution.

The solution to this is to put the Saudis and company out of business and let Europe beg for their oil and gas.

If anyone, specifically Obama was concerned, he would attack the root.

That is why it makes more sense that IF we are going to waste resources and break things it makes more sense to take out the root problems; Iran, Saudiland and Syria. That would clean up the proxies.

As soon as Iran has a nuclear weapon, they will indiscriminately use it on Israel, Europe and America..... and not necessarily in that order.

Global security and stability rests on this action.

Arrogance and stupidity. He led himself to believe he’s a world renown military/political genius and doesn’t need congress or allies or even the support of the people. Waltzed into Russia expecting full support and Putin instead handed him his head. When the congress votes him down (and they will or America will have their heads), he’s finished. The entire world now sees him as the pathetic joke he’s always been.

Decisions. Decisions.

Go to war to save Obama’s presidency.

Or don’t go to war and have Obama humiliated and embarrassed on the world stage.

What a (white) guilt trip! What tripe!

==

That sounds like something out of the Middle Ages when feudal lords went to war because someone pissed in their Cheerios (okay, gruel, because Cheerios hadn’t been invented yet).

I’d say ALL their a$$es are on the line. That includes those in the Senate and the House who vote “YES” for military action.

I think he’s in too deep. Remember, he threatened to go in even if the congress voted no. Even if the UN said no and he was all alone with no allies, he’d still strike. He’s a frustrated wannabe dictator/conqueror and he’s flailing around dangerously. When the congress votes him down, his arrogance will probably lead him to try ordering a military strike anyway. We need the congress to not only vote no, but to remind him (and the military) of their constitutional recourse should he proceed against the will of the people. The imperial presidency must be put in its place.

The real elephant in the room is that Obama lost his credibility before this debacle. He is a serial liar and people know it. Voting for this war and finding it becoming a big nightmare, ruins the credibility of the fools that trusted a serial liar.

Americans do not want another war. No amount of prime time hogwash is going to change that.

All the do it for the kids blather ain’t working. Because Americans don’t want this for our kids. They come first. That why we are dead set against it. Obama be damned.

Putin called him out for the whiny little baby that he is. Take Putin out of the equation and you’ve got a completely different scenario playing out. It’s funny, actually.

This is fundamentally the EU’s position (minus France). Seems like the most sensible course to follow. Biggest thing that I’d like to see right now is an moving of the chess pieces out of the Med. Right now with all those naval assets sailing around in a small space on high alert - there is always the chance that some local commander miscalculates and inadvertently kicks off WWIII.
