Hundreds Of Weapons Find Way Into State Schools (Yes, Pencils and Pens)

Efforts to keep Connecticut schools safe have escalated since a lone gunman walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown last year and shot to death 20 first-graders and six adults. But not all threats to school safety come from outside the building.

State records show that at least 1,246 weapons – or common items used as weapons -- surfaced at Connecticut schools in the 2011-2012 school year, the most recent data available. The weapons included at least 16 handguns and at least two rifles or shotguns.

"It's almost impossible to absolutely ensure that a gun is never going to come into a school building by the hands of a student, a teacher or a visitor," said school safety expert Edward F. Dragan, founder of Education Management Consulting, LLC in Lambertville, N.J.

Of the state's approximately 1,100 public k-12 schools, 537 reported at least one incident where a "weapon" was involved. The state collects the data from local school systems. Items are defined as weapons by their use and some common items found in schools, such as pens and pencils, are included. Sign Up For Traffic Text Alerts The state only lists schools where one or more incidents involving at least one weapon occurred, so the number of weapons is likely to be higher than 1,246. In the majority of cases, the most-dangerous weapons were seized either without incident or without serious injury.

Handguns were reported at two elementary schools: Lebanon Elementary School, where pre-kindergartners through fourth-graders attend, and Waltersville School in Bridgeport, a pre-kindergartners through eighth-grade school.

The police state is alive and well in CT.

My son would have been included in this when his Kindergarten teacher sent home a card with a plastic knife about 3/4" long, from a toy set, taped to it saying, "Please remind your son not to bring weapons to school".

That was six years ago. We Home School now.

How about a notebook or Ipad? You can hit someone over the head with them.

From the article: “”Anything can be used as a weapon,” Trump said. “You could pick up a fire extinguisher and use it as a weapon. You can take a chair and pick it up and hit somebody and use it as a weapon.””

Why aren’t they removing everything from the schools...?

Did anyone ever aver otherwise?

Guess I’d better not elaborate on what I learned to do with a No. 2 Ticonderoga via the Army, Eh? *SNORT*

Such foolishness. ANYTHING can be a weapon. My boys used to bend the Barbie dolls and GI Joe dolls in half and use them as guns, LOL!

Again, such foolishness...

We have to outlaw “hands”. Hands are lethal weapons in themselves and in holding something to use as a weapon. Punch a finger through an eye socket and the person may die. Use the hands to break a neck and the person will die or be paralyzed from then on.

Do the right thing and get rid of hands. /s

Go to the link where it shows pictures of objects that the State considers to be weapons. One of them is a Red Swingline Stapler. An obvious indication that Milton is dangerous.

This has gone beyond Sofa King Stupid!

I guess you added the pencils and pens to the title.

But I really did get into a pencil fight in elementary school. I got the better of the other guy, stabbing him in the arm. Not deep, though. He called it quits after that. We both got sent to the principal’s office. My weapon was returned to me, with stern warnings about safety etc. Things were run with common sense in the old days, sigh.

I see that no one has added the deadliest weapon of them all: the pop tart.

A 7-year-old Anne Arundel County boy was suspended Friday for chewing his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun and saying, “bang, bang”— an offense that the school described as a threat to other students, according to his family.

I expect before they are through all clothing will be banned.

It will be quite the timesaver...

My Jr. Hi (too many decades ago) banned rubber bands as “lethal weapons”.

Not kidding. No one was ever able (or willing?) to tell any of us how you could manage to kill someone with one...

Unbend the paperclip so one end is straight, one end is still u-shaped. Final shape is like a “u” with a long side, like a fishhook.

String the rubber band across thumb and forefinger like a slingshot.

Hook the u-shaped part of the clip over/around the rubber band, holding the long tail end of the clip. Pull back, aim, release. Just like slingshot.

Not deadly, deadly. But it will break skin or put an eye out. Very accurate and slices thru paper targets like a .22 round. The bigger the rubber band and paper clip, the greater distance and punch.

Yes, there was no question in anyone's mind that they could be used for mischief, even permanently injure, but lethal?
