Syria says it "welcomes" Russian proposal to place chemical weapons under international control
CBS ^ | Sept 9, 2013 | CBS/AP

Posted on 09/09/2013 12:07:24 PM PDT by Jim Robinson

MOSCOW Syria on Monday quickly welcomed a call from Russia, its close ally, to place Syrian chemical arsenals under international control, then destroy them to avert a U.S. strike, but did not offer a time frame or any other specifics.

The statement by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem appeared to mark the first official acknowledgement by Damascus that it possesses chemical weapons and reflected what appeared to be an attempt by Syrian President Bashar Assad to avoid the U.S. military attack.

But it remained to be seen whether the statement represented a genuine goodwill gesture by Syria or simply an attempt to buy time.

"Syria welcomes the Russian proposal out of concern for the lives of the Syrian people, the security of our country and because it believes in the wisdom of the Russian leadership that seeks to avert American aggression against our people," al-Moallem said during a visit to Moscow, where he held talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.

However, al-Moallem, would not give any further details in his brief statement and didn't take any questions from reporters.

Moallem's statement came a few hours after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding the alleged use of chemical weapons by his forces by surrendering control of "every single bit" of his arsenal to the international community by the end of the week.

In Washington, U.S. officials said they would take a "hard look" at the proposal but doubted that Syria would carry out such a plan...

Obviously, this could be huge. Securing those weapons would eliminate a great danger to the world, especially since they should not fall into the hands of al Qaeda.

Kerry sure stepped in it there.

Now the MSM will spend a week (or two hopefully) asking Kerry+CO why they dont take up the Russian/Syrian offer to avoid war.

Putin must be laughing at the nit-wits over here running foreign policy.

Great solution thanks to Russia. King Obama ass is saved again because if he ordered a strike impeachment would definitely happen. King Obama is a child like simple ass and the only thing he is good at is campaigning, vacations, and golf.

While this is good news in that it will hopefully avert military action, it saves Obama’s hide.

Obama made this about the people killed, not just about chemical weapons. He wants to go after Syria over the people that are dead, or else he would have done this months ago.

Now he either has to walk away despite his “red line” or still strike with no support.

The last thing the Democrats want is for those WMDs to be turned over for international scrutiny.

It will become obvious where they came from and that place is Saddam Era Iraq.

Saddams “missing “ WMDs will suddenly be found and “Bush Lied, People Died” crowd in Washington who were fully briefed that Saddam's WMDs went to Syria but lied that asses off anyway will be exposed for what was termed at the time “treason's kissing cousin”.

That's Assad's real end game dooms day weapon, and the one that the Democrats fear most.

Now Putin has made Obama look really bad if he doesn’t settle this peacefully. It will point out that Obama’s reason for attacking Syria wasn’t really about preventing chem weapons usage. It will also hurt Obama more with his far leftist anti war crowd.

After all, a peaceful end to this was on the table.

Well, we would still need to call of our Saudi/Qatari dogs to actually stop new world order’s manufactured revolution in Syria..

But shshhhhhh no one is supposed to know about that.

Syria bought their chemical weapons from the UK. Google is your friend.

Chemical weapons have become mostly obsolete these days.

Assad can exterminate AlQaeda much more efficiently with the top notch conventional weapons that the Russians are supplying.

Putin wins again.

This isn’t good for Obama. It weakens him because it makes it look like Obama never really looked at a peaceful solution. Obama doesn’t want this because the chem weapons is not really why he is wanting to attack.

Yes, Putin knows exactly what is going on here as he can watch all the shows on Satellite and internet.

Fighting a war by debating it on cable TV talk shows is pretty dumb.

This one lib here who hates conservatives was so upset last week because Obama is forcing him to side with Palin and Cruz.

All Obama did was have Kerry give a stuttering speech, and he threw Clinton out there for her “I want to be president” speech. Putin pulled the rug and they all fell like dominos.

Now the world surely knows what we have known all along. They are incompetent fools. I hope Clinton enjoyed her 15 minutes.

Obama couldn’t care less about the people who were supposedly killed in Syria with chemical weapons. Note that he has not said ONE WORD about the massive numbers of Christians killed by the rebels.

For Obama and company, this was always about being able to justify (to the American people and the rest of the world) military support for the rebels, the removal of Assad, and the installation of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria. Since Kerry said that all Assad has to do is give up his chemical weapons in one week’s time, Kerry “stupidly” gave Syria and Russia a way to diffuse the threats of full military involvement of the U.S., while still maintaining their positions. Assad will continue to fight and win against the rebels, and the Russians will continue to have influence in the country.

Obama loses.

Jim,
What’s your take? Do you remember the open mic gaffe when Obama told Putin to wait til after the election? Since then, I have wondered if our Pres is in cahoots with Putin? So this chaos he has proliferated in the mideast is part of a strategy to turn Europe over to Russia? This story points in that direction.

Ya see Sports Fans,
everyone suspects chemical weapons wasn’t the real reason for all this. Putin just took the justification for war off the table, AND made Syria a permanent Russian protectorate.

It’s not about how do the war hawks in DC spin this, it’s about how to they start a war, anyway?

The State Department walked back Kerry’s statement, claiming Kerry “was making a rhetorical argument about the impossibility and unlikelihood of Assad turning over chemical weapons he has denied he used.”

Actually, the USA and Russia have special facilities for safe destruction of chemical weapons. I wouldn't be too surprised if Syrian CW is destroyed. Syria would have to pay for that, of course, but what else is new.

With regard to Assad hiding some CW, I don't think he will do it. CW today is of no use. It is only dangerous to the owner, by multiple routes. It needs maintenance, which takes money. Then it cannot be used without a major international scandal. Then you can be framed by rebels who either steal one of your CW bombs or who get another one from someone else. Then there is a chance of an accident or a terrorist act. Finally, enemy soldiers have adequate protection from CW and won't be seriously impacted if you use CW against them. However you examine it, CW is not very valuable. Having just one CW bomb only gives you all the disadvantages, and no advantages at all. It's like when an honest man finds and keeps a "hot gun" with the serial number removed. It only hurts him, and he can't use it for legitimate defense.

Assuming the UN is allowed to come into Syria on a grand scale and identify all the CW and perhaps Bio weapons etc., it is going to take boots on the ground, to protect them.
So who pray tell is going to volunteer military forces to watch over the UN inspectors.
Will the Russians offer to be the ones. If so, what happens when the al-Qaeda and other jihadist now in Syria and growing in numbers start to pick off Russian soldiers.
This is starting to become rather interesting.

Syria may have bought their weapons from the UK, but I don’t think it was Syria that launched them. I think it was the rebels, which consist of AQ and the MB, and they were supplied by the US via Benghazi along with many many short range missiles, and shoulder fired.

This is all about cleaning up a mess. The strategic targets will not be against Asad, but they will be to eliminate evidence. Especially with Hillary running in a couple of years. Ever wonder why Bubba is out supporting Hussien now?

My dad used to tell me, when in doubt, follow the money.

McCain and Hillary and Graham and all the rest, authorized the sale of these weapons to the rebels, and now want to hide the evidence.

The UN and Russia think the weapons came from rebels. I agree with them.

I think Obama will not accept any such offer. His supporters are trying to make out like the fact that this was floating is somehow indicative of the success of his policy. Quite the contrary. Thankfully, it will smash up his narrative for his “media offensive” today and tomorrow. All talk is of the Russian/Syrian offer.
