Jay Carney: U.S. threat pushed Syrians By: Tal Kopan September 10, 2013 08:49 AM EDT
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Tuesday that a reported deal between Russia and Syria on chemical weapons was a potentially positive development, and he credited the threat of a U.S. military strike with bringing it about.
We see this as potentially a positive development and we see it as a clear result of the pressure thats been put on Syria by the fact that the president has been moving forward, Carney said on MSNBCs Morning Joe when asked about the breaking news.
Carney said President Barack Obamas position in his address Tuesday night - pushing for congressional approval of a military strike - will be unchanged from 24 hours ago, and reiterated that the limited, focused strike the president was advocating was already having results.

Lets be clear, what were seeing with the Russian proposal and Syrian reaction has only come about because of the threat, the credible threat of U.S. military action, Carney said. Before this morning, the Syrian government had never even acknowledged they possessed chemical weapons. Now they have.
The White House spokesman also said the idea is something the U.S. has been discussing with the Russians, including at the G-20 Summit last week.
I want to make clear [it] is something that we have been discussing with the Russians. Secretary [John] Kerry with his counterpart, Foreign Minister [Sergey] Lavrov, and the president with President [Vladimir] Putin in St. Petersburg just on Friday, Carney said.
Carney said the U.S. will continue to engage with its allies internationally to verify the seriousness of the Syrian proposal, but there is no specific plan in place for moving forward with it.

Boehner should hold the vote tomorrow, but he won’t because he’s a loser.
Yes, Obama got them to surrender on this by threatening attack then backpeddling and announcing that he needed congress to give him their approval before he could decide what he should really do, after even England rejected him.
Kerry and Obama’s indecision and blaming others obviously had Assad wetting his pants.
Just got done saying to the hubby that I expected 0bama to still come on TV tonight and flap his jaw about what a great thing he has done to bring peace to Syria. Sounds like Carney is setting the stage for him.
Assad will put a couple of crates of shells in a warehouse surrounded by blue helmets.
The rest of his weapons will remain available to troops, and his production facilities will double their output.
Checkmate, Horseface / 0bummer.
“had Assad wetting his pants.”
Yeah, with laughter.
I certainly hope so.
They are even too stupid to declare victory and shut up...
FOCUS GROUP WINNER!!! Burson-Marsteller obviously held focus groups all over the country over the weekend, offering ordinary “folks” $35 to come to a hotel meeting room for a discussion about current events. This “Obama’s threat sparked the solution” meme was the winner! Yay!!!!! More fake, phony, Burson-Marsteller smoke and mirrors to cloud the issue and make the Kenyan Kommunity Organizer look like a leader!!! Yay!!!!!
No Jay, you pencil-necked little quisling, it did not.
What “pushed” Syria was an international leader who is shrewd and has played you and your President like a fiddle.
Russia came in and accomplished more in a day or two than Obama has in two years. Sadly, making the US look inept, weak, and like bumbling idiots in the process.
It is not Obama’s idea that is going to go before the UN Security Council and get a unanimous “yes” vote you nincompoop, it’s Putin’s.
Who Really is Barack Hussein Obama
On Laura’s show this a.m.:
Congressman Buck McKeon (R) CA, was in a classified briefing, yesterday Sept. 9th, with Susan Rice and John Kerry.
He asked them, What about the Russian proposal that Syria gives up their Chemical Weapons?
Susan Rice dismissed the possibility with All the Russians ever do is talk, they never act.
Kerry said Thats not very likely.
Moments later and down the street, Obamas response to the same question was, Were open to that.
They dont communicate internally and they have no plan ..
BUT NOW .Theyre claiming credit for this brilliant, move to avoid war
And their compliant media will lead the parade.
Have liberals learned something or are they being their typical hypocritical selves?
If Assad doesnt use them anymore then Obama can claim that it is his accomplishment, its weak but it would sell I bet.
However its not going to look so good when Assad uses other methods of slaughter after Obama declares victory, after all they are only making the case on Chem weapons nothing else.
So Putin pulls obozo’s azz out of the fire, and Zero takes credit for it...I seen this coming, it was so obvious what the spin would be.
Idiot, Stupid, Narcissist, Fool, et al there is no one word that is sufficient to explain this guy, it would have to be a new word, never before spoken.
Ponder this as you listen to B. Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, tonight:
Reagan lived by the credo: Trust, but verify.
With Obama we can do neither.
Obama lied to us about Benghazi, and then spent a year covering up his dereliction of duty as Commander In Chief during the critical hours of the Benghazi Massacre.
Can anyone in the US Military trust Obama?
Why should we taxpayers trust Obama?
Who can trust someone whose own SEALED personal records cannot be verified?
Obama cannot be trusted or verified is the obvious conclusion.
Apparently, we should vote no on the resolution, because it was the clear indication that we would vote “no” that caused the Syrians to accept the deal the Russians offered after Kerry mistakenly joked about it.
These asshats have no shame.
They blame other for things they screw up and claim credit for things other accomplish.
It’s Camelot all over again with Hussein starring in the role of JFK as we play “stare down the ruskies over weapons in a client state”!
Yeah, if it weren’t for those Republican warmongers the whole thing would have been settled peacefully by now. < /washington post >
Let’s see, Russia provided the weapons in the first place, will make sure they are the ones who take custodial care of them, time passes and the weapons end up back in Assad’s hands.
Did I miss anything?
Not sure exactly what that’s happened the past couple weeks on this issue could be described as “...the president has been moving forward...
man o man I’d like to be in grammar school with this prick, I’d kick his ass daily.
