Russian Proposal Could Offer Obama Escape From Bind
New York Times ^ | Tuesday September 10, 2013

WASHINGTON — President Obama woke up Monday facing a Congressional defeat that many in both parties believed could hobble his presidency. And by the end of the day, he found himself in the odd position of relying on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir V. Putin, of all people, to bail him out.

The surprise Russian proposal to defuse the American confrontation with Syria made a tenuous situation even more volatile for a president struggling to convince a deeply skeptical public of the need for the United States to respond militarily in yet another Middle Eastern country, this time in retaliation for the use of chemical weapons. It could make the situation even more precarious. Or it could give Mr. Obama an escape from a predicament partly of his own making.

In effect, Mr. Obama is now caught between trying to work out a deal with Mr. Putin, with whom he has been feuding lately, or trying to win over Republicans in the House who have made it their mission to block his agenda. Even if he does not trust Mr. Putin, Mr. Obama will have to decide whether to treat the Russian proposal seriously or assume it is merely a means of obstructing an American military strike.

“Putin knows that everyone wants an out, so he’s providing one,” said Fiona Hill, a former national intelligence officer and co-author of “Mr. Putin: Operative in the Kremlin.” “It seems like a bold idea that will get everyone, including Obama, out of a bind that they don’t want to be in.”

From what I’m seeing, Obama is now seeking congressional pre approval for an attack while pretending to go along with Putin’s deal.

“Certainly, this is all reasonable, it will function and will work out, only if the US and those who support it on this issue pledge to renounce the use of force, because it is difficult to make any country – Syria or any other country in the world – to unilaterally disarm if there is military action against it under consideration,” President Putin told exclusively to RT on Tuesday.

Hey NYT,

Ready to admit YOUR president is an ignorant piece of excrement who can be outmaneuvered by a clever moth yet?

Let’s not forget that our nincompoop potus is the best thing that ever happened to Putin. He wants Bam to keep doing his bidding. Bam is our answer to Medvedev.

Right you are!

This in from Rick Cowan (@rcowan) on Capitol Hill about the group of senators who are working to modify a congressional resolution authorizing US military force in Syria to include a strict timeline for Syria to turn over chemical weapons.

A source familiar with the negotiations says the senators involved in the negotiations include John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte, Saxby Chambliss, Chuck Schumer, Chris Coons, Carl Levin and Bob Casey. Robert Menendez is in the discussions and the White House is being kept apprised.

Assad got to thinking he might end up like Gaddafi. Obama was still trying to get his use of force approval. Once Obama has it. They figure they will gin up something to make it look like Assad violated the deal to turn over chem weapons.

Good grief. This is getting whacky.

The point here is that Obama has more in common with a thuggish ex-KGB agent than he does with American conservatives. Something to think about.

I love this - it's so typical to the worldview of the NY Times:

Democrats are mystified and in some cases livid with Mr. Obama for asking Congress to decide the matter instead of simply ordering one or two days of strikes and getting it over with... Although Mr. Obama’s decision to ask for a Congressional vote has come to be seen as a strategic mistake...

Yeah, what is this "Constitution" thing they keep talking about? King Barack has never approved a "Constitution".

The notion that anyone in Congress is angry at the President for forcing them to go on record on a matter of life and death is appalling, a fundamental dereliction of duty that the Times apparently finds perfectly reasonable. These are not, it seems unnecessary to point out, the rules they applied to Bush.

They MUST be kidding!!!

Ain't no way Vlad gonna let this big fish go!

I'll tell yas how it's gonna end up.

Obama & Co gonna go for it hook line and sinker in their desperation. They ain't gonna do their due diligence and cross all their I's and dot all their T's. They're desperate. At this stage, they'll take ANY bargain to not be made into a bunch of eunuch's.

Then after they've accepted the deal, suddenly Syria will reneg on the deal and Vlad will just do a palms up as in "What can I do. I tried. So sorry."

And O is gonna be left holdin the bag.

Vlad & Co KNOW, beyond the SHADOW of a doubt, that once this blows over, there ain't no WAY that O will let this happen again so all they gotta do is wait him out and they'll get their way.
