Obama’s Insanity on Syria
Algemeiner ^ | September 10, 2013 | David Meyers

Posted on 09/11/2013 4:52:16 AM PDT by SJackson

The Algemeiner recently published a parody of President Obama’s indecisiveness on Syria.

So when I saw the headline that Obama was willing to let Assad “surrender” his chemical weapons in order to avoid a U.S. strike, I assumed it was another parody.

It wasn’t.

It’s hard to understand how anyone could even consider this plan to be a serious option.

How can we trust the word of a Assad – a man who has murdered tens of thousands of his own people, used chemical weapons, broken every international norm and law, reneged on all of his promises to the UN, U.S. officials, and international mediators, and is supported by Iran, one of the most duplicitous nations in the world?

Do we really believe that Assad would give us all of his weapons? How could we verify this? We don’t even know where the weapons are or how many Assad has. How can we take him at his word? How do we know he won’t transfer them to Russia or Iran? (If you think that’s impossible, think about how much military hardware Iran and Russia have shipped into Syria. Do you really think they can’t reverse engineer that process?)

The West is trying to avoid conflict at all costs. This is a mistaken strategy that emboldens our enemies, and will lead to serious trouble down the line. If we’re willing to engage in such a silly charade as this to avoid a missile strike in Syria, what kind of message does that send the world?

Other countries are clearly learning that they can push us and push us, and we will never blink. And when a “red line” finally is crossed, we’ll still grab onto any possible option that allows us to avoid confrontation.

How can Obama first claim military action is necessary, but now say he’s open to an approach that will let Assad go unpunished and retain some (or even most) of his chemical weapons? Obama’s, and America’s, credibility is shrinking by the second.

Obama is not a stupid man. He knows any plan to let Assad “surrender” his WMD is unfeasible and unrealistic. But the President is so desperate to avoid a conflict, that he’s apparently willing to consider it. This is shameful for the leader of the United States. America, and the free world, deserves better.

Aside from the fact that Assad can’t be trusted, the plan doesn’t even work when you really think about it. Syria is in the middle of a bloody, protracted civil war. How are the large international teams needed to secure the weapons going to get into Syria, move the stockpiles, and ensure no terrorist groups get access to them? Assad’s own forces have trouble moving around the country and securing their military objective. But international forces will somehow be able to?

This whole debacle arose thanks to an off-handed and ill-advised comment by John Kerry. President Assad and his Russian enablers seized on the remark, and are now using it to make a mockery of Kerry, Obama, and the United States.

Obama’s willingness to even consider such a plan has made the President, and America, look like rank fools. The world is upside down. Will anyone come along and right it?

Not insanity, imo a strike under BHO's direction more resembles that, rather a way out of the box incompetence at the top forced us into. I think it's fair to say that in a geopolitical, not military, sense we are now simply one of several superpowers.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but in this writer I see a McCain, Graham type of mentality.

He wants Obama to go full bore against Assad and topple him, to what end, I wonder, considering who the other side consists of and how the Christian community is being genocided.

??

The whole Syrian debacle arose thanks to an off-handed and ill-advised comment by John Kerry which was seized upon by Assad and Putin, who are now using it to make a mockery of Kerry, Obama, and the US.

NOTE: The US needs no outside help to look foolish...
Obama, Kerry, Pelosi are doing the job themselves.

- It is not a serious option and nothing will change. Assad will keep the chemicals and Russia will continue to back his client state. As a result of nothing happening, Obama will do nothing, no attacks, not later and not into the distant future.

How can we trust the word of a Assad?

We can't. It is meaningless. We can’ trust the Iranians, Russians, NORKS, Hizbollah, anybody Islamic or any FSA fighter. But, this is what the President is doing in order to avoid a Putin slam dunk, which is what he did anyway.

The issue here is Iran, not Syria and now Obama has paved the way (just like Clinton before him with the NORKS) for Iran to get a bomb and threaten Israel, Europe and the USA. It is just a matter of time before they come hunting for us as they did today, 12 years ago.

This is what they do when you cower into a corner and hide your face so you won't see reality. They come into your corner and kill you and this is what may happen now. By dithering on Syria, (for excellent reasons) we invite the next 9/11 unfortunately.

I doubt we can trust Assad, BUT I KNOW we cannot trust Obama.

Lie after lie told to us, and every move he makes providing aid and comfort to Al Qaeda.

Yes I doubt we can trust the Russians and Assad, but I know we cannot trust Obama.

Possibly, though regardless of one’s position on military action, I think it’s clear to most everyone we’ve been mastered on the world stage. Personally I don’t think anything McCain or Graham have suggested would be effective at this point, you can’t use the military effectively simply to save face. As to Syrian Christians, no one particularly cares about them. Or the Copts, or Sudanese or Keynian Christians. Genocide, as distinguished from mass murder, is not nor ever has been an major issue on the world stage. If it had been, there would be robust Jewish communities in Egypt and Syria alongside Christian and Muslim communities.

Not a fan of the iranian govt, but it was sunni's (mostly saudi) that attacked us on 9-11.

Remember 9-11 (2001 & 2012).

True, but Iran has sworn to destroy us (The Great Satan) and Israel (The Little Satan) and are wroking on that goal everyday while we peer into Syria.

IOW, Assad is nothing more than your typical Libtard dictator hero. Just on a smaller scale.

Obama never had any credibility to begin with. Whatever credibility America had left was pissed away on November 6, 2012.
