Democratic consultant and President Bill Clintons former strategist James Carville will serve as the main draw at a Sept. 28 fundraiser for U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes, said Attorney General Jack Conway, who is hosting the event at his home.
Jack and Elizabeth Conway and Gov. Steve Beshear and first lady Jane Beshear are serving as co-hosts for the event, in which individuals who contribute at least $500 can get their picture taken in a private reception with Carville.
Carville also fills a spot that Grime campaign organizers had hoped would go to Carvilles former boss, Bill Clinton. Conway said when the Lundergan family first approached him about hosting the event, they mentioned to me it might be Bill Clinton as the headliner.
I heard they might have had some scheduling issues. I think hes doing some international travel, Conway said.
Carville, however, will be a big get, Conway said. And Carville is familiar to longtime Kentucky Democrats after serving as consultant for Wallace Wilkinsons come-from-behind win in the 1987 Democratic primary.
James Carville is very popular among rank-and-file Democrats, Conway said. And hes always entertaining.
Conway said hes expecting as many as 300-500 people at the event, which will be her one major Louisville fundraiser before the Sept. 30 quarterly deadline for the next federal fundraising report.
In fact, Grimes is stacking the end of September with several major fundraisers as her campaign closes its first fundraising quarter since she entered the 2014 U.S. Senate race in July.
Musician Will.i.am, frontman of the Black Eyed Peas, will headline a Sept. 20 fundraiser for Grimes in Northern Kentucky on Sept. 20, as the Cincinnati Enquirer first reported.
And movie executive Jeffrey Katzenberg is hosting a Grimes fundraiser in Los Angeles on Sept. 28, as Politico first reported last week.
