Were a bit closer to a government shutdown today. And that may not be such a bad thing. Heres the deal:
1) House Republicans pulled their bill to fund the government. The House was expected to vote Wednesday on a bill to continue funding the federal government. The initial whip count showed the bill 18 votes short of passage, so the vote didnt happen. Why is the bill 18 votes short of passage? Obamacare, of course.
2) The GOPs small Obamacare problem. The vote was delayed because the House GOP cant decide on what to do about Obamacare. Hardcore conservatives want to refuse to fund the government as long as any of that funding goes to Obamacare which is to say, they want to shut down the government over Obamacare. This is a fight that House leadership believes they will lose, and lose very badly. So Team Boehner tried to finesse it. The funding bill required a vote on defunding Obamacare. But House conservatives quickly realized that they would lose the vote in the Senate and the result would be the federal government would get funded, and Obamacare would be funded along with it. So they turned on the bill, and, fearing for its passage, House leadership delayed the vote.
3) The GOPs big Obamacare problem. Behind all this is a simple fact: The GOP has lost on Obamacare. They didnt have the votes to stop it from passing in 2010. They didnt have the votes to repeal it in 2011. They didnt have the votes to win the presidency and the Senate by campaigning against it in 2012. And they really have no way to stop it in 2013.
Now its going into effect, and once it goes into effect and begins delivering health insurance to tens of...

You’re right! It IS a good thing.
Boehner should be relived of his house leadership position, at least Pelosi was a junk yard dog, he is a whining wussy, bending over for the moron in chief.
It may well be the Republic’s last best hope.
What would happen if the government shut down for a month and no one noticed?
:)
SHUT THE WHOLE THING DOWN AND START OVER!
This time, play the rules. No more cockamamie agencies like the EPA, etc.
I’m guessing that a few hundred million a year ought to be enough to run everything (except the military) if we make the Fed as bare bones as the Founders had hoped it would stay. Put most of what should belong to the States back to the States.
One big problem for the Dems: the majority of people in this country don’t want Obamacare.
Ezra “Journolist” Klein is a slimy little weasel.
We'd all be better off because there would be less mind numbingly stupid laws and taxes
FTA: “Congress has a rigorous vacation schedule to adhere to, giving it precious little time to accomplish the goal of not shutting down the government”
VACATION SCHEDULE? They can’t attend to business because of their VACATiON SCHEDULE? Didn’t they just get back from vacation> Who do they think they are? Little Obamas?
I say FIRE them all and stop funding their precious vacations.
Hardcore conservatives want to refuse to fund the government as long as any of that funding goes to Obamacare which is to say, they want to shut down the government over Obamacare.
There is not a shred of truth in this statement: the conservatives will explicitly fund the government, they will simply failed to fund Obamacare; there is no desire to shut down the government over Obamacare; if the government were to shut down over Obamacare it will be done by Harry Reid or Brack Obama but not by conservatives in the House of Representatives or elsewhere.
Knowing this is maddening because this jerk on MSNBC and the Washington Post is spewing nothing other than a Goebbels-like repeated lie which has now become so shopworn from repeated airings that Goebbels himself would be proud to see the vindication of his own Maxim about repeating a lie often enough. But the blame should be shared by the Republican establishment which has sided with the big lie from the very beginning and equated a disinclination to fund Obamacare with the desire to shut down the government.
The Rinos inside the Beltway are as culpable as Democrats for conditioning the public to believe the big lie.
Ezra Klein is the editor of Wonkblog and a communist at the Washington Post.
Or at least that's the way I first read it.
More commie pap from our friend Ezra:
The White House may really be about to win on Syria
I guess he's a little put out that we don't have a completely one party socialist government system.
Shut her down.
EXACTLY! I've been trying to make this case for a while. Republicans are again caught arguing a false premise. In this case, whether or not the GOP wants to shut down the government. "We don't want to shut down the government, but...."
BS! The House has to pass a budget. If it excludes funding for Obamacare, GREAT! It will be the dems that vote no on the budget, therefore causing a delay and eventually "shutting down" the government. It will be the dems that "shut down government". Don't argue over whether or not we "want" to. Rather, say they have do not have that power once they have passed a budget. It's up to the dems in Senate.
Maybe the problem is that there is a move to defund JUST 0care.... How about modifying that to defunding 0care PLUS the White Hut.
It's happened several times, likely in your lifetime. Do you remember when?
There you go.
hehe! No, I do not at all remember. ;) I wouldn’t miss them a bit! nah-nah-nah-nah- hey hey hey - goodbye.
The Conservatives should insert one thing into the bill. NO EXEMPTIONS.
Now go after every Rat and RINO who doesnt vote for that.
Which I believe is exactly why it won't happen. They can't afford for the sheeple to discover the world in fact does not revolve around DC.
Send everyone home, including Congress. Close the White House doors and let the Kenyan and his fat Wookie wife go to MacDonald's to eat. Make his worthless staff go get real jobs - if they can find them. Let the military eat stored MREs and sit while until the politicians come to their senses and Congress reconvenes and actually passes a real budget bill.
Shut off the EBT cards. Pack up the bureaucratic leviathan and it's thousands of useless or harmful agencies and let their "worker's" eat cake for a while and experience what the rest of the country is going through. Everybody suffers - not just the private sector and those trying to do the right thing.
Let the states pick up whatever slack they want and can. The country may eventually come to it's senses and we'll survive. But if it doesn't, it wouldn't anyhow.
If we don't do something radical at this point, the county is not going to survive. We are at that crossroads.
Close the parasite down...
It would be a GREAT thing.
Term Limits, Term Limits, Term Limits! Plus, starve the beast of their funding by withholding income taxes.
Yes... Some of those Mark Levin amendments are looking better and better
Yup. Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et al, would love nothing better. One party rule. Hell, with Bohener heading up the opposition, they already have it.
In particular, the questionnaire should ask if the tax-funded "Navigator" program intends to transfer personal/ financial/medical data of the insured to the local/county/national Democrat Party, relevant Unions, banks, investment companies, drug companies, insurance companies. Trial Lawyers' associations and whether "Navigators" have sub rosa contracts with these, and other groups, to provide significant info to enrich databases for pecuniary purposes.
REFERENCE A West Virginia nonprofit has turned down a federal grant it received to help residents navigate new health insurance options under the Affordable Care Act after it received an inquiry from Attorney General Patrick Morrisey about how it would protect consumer information. Clarksburg-based West Virginia Parent Training Inc. did not respond to a letter it received from Morrisey directing it to answer 26 questions about the group's personnel and hiring practices, including employee background checks and employee monitoring programs, the Sunday Gazette-Mail (http://bit.ly/17M1QVe) reported. PLANNED PARENTHOOD WILL HAVE ACCESS TO SS#, TAX, MEDICAL INFORMATION
Breitbart Big Government ^ | 8/23/2013 | William Bigelow / FR Posted by markomalley
EXCERPT Planned Parenthood is about to obtain access to your Social Security number, tax form, bank account, and medical records.
With the advent of ObamaCare, consumers buying health insurance through health care exchanges will be required to speak to navigators. Navigators are supposed to help consumers find the best coverage and ascertain whether they are eligible for a federal subsidy.
Any navigator will have access to the federal data hub, which holds information from the Department of Health and Human Services, the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Defense Department, the Office of Personnel Management, the Veterans Health Administration, and the Peace Corps.
Planned Parenthood received $655,000 from the Obama administration to hire navigators. In Iowa, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland received $214,427; in Montana, Intermountain Planned Parenthood, Inc. got $295,604; and in New Hampshire, Planned Parenthood of Northern New England raked in $145,161.
And there is not much scrutiny over who these navigators will be; HHS will not require background checks or fingerprinting, and a previous criminal conviction, even if it was for identity theft , will not trigger a rejection. To make matters worse, the administration has cut the new employees training from 30 hours to 20 and reduced screening.
Just curious - any stats to back that up? I'll readily agree that most people that know what Obamacare is don't want it, but how many others out there still think it's more freebies for them?
Wonkblog? What the heck is Wonkblog? Is little Ezra now calling himself a wonk?
It is purposeful that Boehner/Cantor muddle their message. They do not want this fight on Obamacare, they have no use for conservatives who do, and they are not against Obamacare, paying it (and us) only lip service.
Methinks that Lee, Cruz and Paul, need to be doing play by play press conferences to inform the the public and to combat the “muddled message” ploy used by leadership, and to combat the media bias against Republicans.
We’re going to get killed in the media with no push back from our guys. (This would not include Cantor, Cornyn or Pete Sessions.)
The Fed Gov shuts down each and every single weekend for two days and on most holidays for three days. Big whoop!
BS quote in the article, DEFUND the damn thing, that simple, no money for the bill, no bill.
What is lacking in todays body politic is a philosophy that can be advanced BECAUSE of the veiled threats of doom by the opposition.
Without that Damn the torpeodes! Full speed ahead! philosophy, the meekest member of the opposition can turn us into sniveling, sobbing, cowards such as Boehner and McConnell.
For example, the manipulating, fear-mongering, threat of doom and gloom promoted by the supporters of Government harm to our Republic that a certain Republican action would shutdown the Government SHOULD be a clarion call for Republicans to shut down the Government to right the wrong that the Government is currently doing.
To not shut down the Government is to support continuation of the wrong that the Government is currently doing.
Whatever wrong is being protected by the supporters of Governmental wrong, SHOULD BE our signal that we should focus on undoing what they are trying to protect, deny, coverup or otherwise hide.
What is required to right the wrong is known to all Warriors: THE COURAGE OF ONES CONVICTIONS.
Instead, today in our sorry body politic, these are times of whimpering, timid, compromise-away-ones-values in the false hope of achieving the equivalent of a 1960s group hippie hug.
These are times when we wait silently for a larger than life, Warrior to swoop in on a white horse and make everything nicey-nice again.
These are times when the majority of people who vote choose politicians that promise pie-in-the-sky to them, and then these same politicians get put in charge of increasing the debt burden on our Grandchildrens descendants.
Thus, we have a self-caused burden of a virtual cycle of debt to our descendants caused by promises that we choose to vote for.
These are the times when the obvious solution to these problems can be seen by The Man in the Glass.

The Man in the Glass
by Dale Wimbrow, (c) 1934
1895-1954
When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you King for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that man has to say.
For it isnt your Father, or Mother, or Wife,
Whose judgment upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the man staring back from the glass.
You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum,
And think youre a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says youre only a bum
If you cant look him straight in the eye.
Hes the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For hes with you clear up to the end,
And youve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.
You may get what you want down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If youve cheated the guy in the glass.
A politician once corrupt, always corrupt. I apologize for being on this âcall it what it isâ rant but identifying a politician as being corrupt and facts to support it is a career killer, a point that an opponent can capitalize on. Also, calling a news org corrupt for slanting the news will challenge if not destroy the news orgâs credibility. Everybody knows corruption rules this government but nobody speaks to it in truth and CALLs IT WHAT IT IS. Forget political correctness, our country and our freedom are at stake and those corrupt politicians are counting on no body speaking truth to their being corrupt. A CALL IT WHAT IT IS campaign needs to sweep this country. If a politician lies to appease the people’s concerns in order to pass legislation, (we have to pass it to find out what’s in it) or what ever the case may be that impacts we the people, they need to be publicly identified as being CORRUPT.
Here’s recent data derived from a CNN poll, no less.
Thanks, I had not seen that. Unfortunately, many people that don’t like it will keep voting for the same people that gave it to them in the first place.
I always sleep better when there’s a shutdown in Congress. I don’t need then to be doing things for us or to us.
“What would happen if the government shut down for a month and no one noticed?”
Oh, people would notice. For one thing, folks on Social Security would not get their monthly checks; that would be a disaster for many of us (I am retired on SSI). For another, all us disabled veterans would not get our monthly checks and medical care (I am under VA care for cancer); that could be fatal for some of us. Millions of Federal Government workers would miss two paychecks; that would be an economic catastrophe in certain places, like Montgomery and Prince Georges Cos., MD and Northern Virginia.
Romney guestimated that 47% of Americans received major benefits from the Federal Government. You can’t cut that off without consequences, even for a short time.
On the other hand, we can’t continue to finance government by Continuing Resolutions without a budget. That has just led to fiscal chaos.
Perhaps the House can pass Continuing Resolutions on a line item basis: we will fund *this* program, and *that* agency, but not the whole shebang.
