Skip to comments.[Yahoo CEO] Marissa Mayer: 'It's Treason' For Yahoo To Disobey The NSA

Marissa Mayer was on stage on Wednesday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference when Michael Arrington asked her about NSA snooping.
He wanted to know what would happen if Yahoo just didn't cooperate. He wanted to know what would happen if she were to simply talk about what was happening, even though the government had forbidden it.
"I'm proud to be part of an organization that from the very beginning in 2007, with the NSA and FISA and PRISM, has been skeptical and has scrutinized those requests. In 2007 Yahoo filed a lawsuit against the new Patriot Act, parts of PRISM and FISA, we were the key plaintiff. A lot of people have wondered about that case and who it was. It was us ... we lost. The thing is, we lost and if you don't comply it's treason."

ahh, scoundreldom. bet their devotion to things that uplift the country is rather limited!
Then don’t comply and contact the local media and let them know the NSA is going to send thugs after geeky Yahoo engineers.
FFS, someone has to take a stand for freedom!!!
And to think we’ve got clowns like McCain acting indignant over the fact that Putin says we’re not exceptional.
Seems to me that this is more proof that our exceptionalism is a thing of the past.
Big Sis ain’t my Mom.
The Stasi were pikers.
No, it's not. "Treason" is the only crime enumerated in the US Constitution, and it sets a very high bar.
Refusing a court order is contempt of court. Ask Eric Holder what happens when you are held in contempt.
Well, that pretty much ends my business relationship with Yahoo!
“Just following orders”.....gee, where have I heard that before?
Gee, I dunno, from your girls, mom?
You take their court order to your lawyers and have them file an appeal with the closest local Federal Court demanding compensation for each action to be specified and paid for.
Whatever KoolAid she is drinking......I don’t want any.
Their "brave" stand was the subject of countless front-page news stories. They did not suffer one bit of persecution as a result.
Yes, by all means, obey your “masters,” you insufferable twit. People like you would have us all marching into the gas chambers....
Only treason is treason. Publicly telling the government to go “F” itself is not treason. If they had made the governments obscene demand (and their refusal) public, I doubt the government could have prevailed.
And Ed Snowden would still have a job.
IIRC, Marissa Mayer was an Obama campaign bundler for Silicon Valley.
Thoughtcrime does not entail death, comrades. Thoughtcrime is death.
She be layin’ upside down on a chaise lounge in her new $35M mansion in SF too long....
I’m ready to vote for the first presidential candidate who promises to defund the NSA. Not trim its budget. Defund it. Abolish it. It has become an evil power accountable only to itself. And if that is not bad enough, it’s not even protecting Americans from actual terrorists like the Boston bombers; who could have been caught with a little old fashion detective work; but I guess when you’re busy eavesdropping on everyone, there is no time for such mundanities.
Isn’t this the same beyotch who cancelled everyone’s work from home privileges while having a nursery built near her office so she could have her child close by? I believe it is.
Hoo Boy; Someone’s had a wee bit too much of the kewl aid
I take this woman’s brilliant insights as evidence as to why Yahoo is going into the toilet.
That wouldn’t be a wise move, my FRiend. Speaking as a retired Agency officer, I can assure you that there are thousands of dedicated Agency employees, both here and abroad, that are focused like lasers on our targets, both current and potential. In all my 37 years, military and civilian, I never once targeted, recorded or reported on US Persons, nor did any people I worked with.
While I don’t like their recent changes to the sports pages, and she doesn’t know what treason means, Yahoo stock has almost doubled in the past year.
Not a fan of her politics, but she is trying to expose the nsa overreach. What ever the motivation, good for yahoo. The more exposure of the nsa, the better.
If just one of these high-level CEOs is put on trial for treason, it’s game over for the NSA. She’s just another compliant executive without a spine.
Compliance with Tyranny is Treason.
Some folks wouldn’t know Tyranny is if it was staring back at them through the Prison Bars.
Now that’s quite the clever twist! How very imaginative of her, and you!
I sincerely doubt that is her motive, it seems she isn’t too schooled on the 4 requirements that must be met to charged with treason. She is a snotty weasel, imho.
But yeah, lets talk about her and not the NSA's illegal activities.
Seems you’ve missed my point, but if you chose to believe that was her motive, have at it.
Of course any exposure of the nsa is a plus, we are in agreement there.
Seems you missed my statement that I don't care about her motives.
It is illegal for any company, forced to turn over data, to announce that fact to the public.
Perhaps her motive is purely corporate in nature. It that your point?
Because (did i tell you?) i dont care what her motive is.
I believe we are on the same page, and yes, I think the wording just struck me. I don’t give a rats butt about her either, I just didn’t think her statement was an attempt to expose the NSA.
Thanks for the clarity, again, we are both looking for all the exposure of this evil practice!
The “law” is treasonous - refusal to comply is patriotic.
If you've got a spine, then all you have to do is use your life savings to buy Yahoo stock, have her replaced by someone who goes jail, and then kiss your savings goodbye. I own yahoo stock--
--so please tell me if you've got spine enough to actually do something, so I can sell in time.
(*sigh*) Umpteen million a year in salary and bonuses and she doesn’t even know the definition of treason.
I have heard many conservatives, and many on this board, say the same thing
Wow, you’re a rich guy!
What. A share costs less than $30. That's rich?
