Syrian Rebels Attack Chinese Diplomats, Embassy
The Diplomat ^ | 9/13/13 | Staff

Chinese diplomats in Syria as well as Beijing's embassy are under regular threat from rebel attacks, China's ambassador to Syria has confided to local media outlets.

In an interview with the Global Times [ link at site], Zhang Xun, China's ambassador to Syria said that Beijing's embassy has increasingly been caught in the cross-hairs of fighting between rebel and government forces in recent months...

Zhang said that in another attack last month, Syrian rebels fired mortar shells at President Bashar al-Assad's motorcade. They missed the Syrian leader but hit a building that was located just 10 meters from the Chinese embassy...

Another diplomat from the embassy told the Global Times that Chinese personnel have been targeted directly by rebel forces, particularly when they are meeting with Syrian officials. Indeed, according to a Want China Times [ link at site] report, Zhang was nearly killed in a sniper attack during a meeting he held with Syria's foreign minister...

There are also reports that the rebels are actively plotting attacks against the Chinese embassy, presumably in retaliation for China's continued support for the Assad regime. The Want China Times report said that a brigade commander in the Free Syrian Army, one of the rebel forces fighting the Syrian government, has vowed to launch a "full-scale attack" on the Chinese embassy.

Meanwhile, the Global Times claims that a local driver the embassy had employed was arrested earlier this year by Syrian authorities for allegedly planning to place bombs under the embassy car. The article, which said the driver confessed to the crime, added that he had been recruited by Syrian rebel forces during a trip to Jordan in February...

This ambassador seems to really be taking a major chance by coming out with this publicly.

Because of the abdication of a whoring US Congress,
busy fleecing the American public through their
“Laws” made for OTHERS,
WW3 is developing as the Free World + Russia and China
vs the USA and al Qaeda.

No, like I said, this ambassador - given there are only 20 Chinese nationals left there, according to the article, when there were 1,200 at one time, is taking a big chance by saying all of this publicly.

How is this so? Isn’t the official Chinese position to support the Syrian government? How does his trashing the rebels put him in any bad position?

The rebels are already having a hard time, do they really want to bring the Chinese into this?

20 Chinese nationals left at the embassy, 8 are reporters.

He saod in the article that he is not without fear, has a bullet-proof vest, and probably- given how few nationals are left - doesn’t have much protection.

Given that the article says that a brigade commander has vowed to wage a full-scale attack on the embassy, he will only make them angrier by talking about all of this publicly.

Who knows what either side of this conflict is thinking. IMHO, it is best to stay out of this.

I don’t think the rebels really want to bring the Chinese into this conflict. Mao subsidized Communist insurgencies around the world to the tune of tens of billions (back when a Mickey D’s burger was 20 cents) at a time when Chinese were dying of starvation in the tens of millions, and Chinese GDP per capita was as low as or lower than the least developed African countries. With its present GDP per capita in the upper half of the table, and a total GDP greater than all of the Muslim countries put together, China could keep Assad afloat and in guns and ammo for as long as he needs to push all the Sunni Arabs out of Syria.

Towards the end I believe there’s a MLRS, a BM21 grad. Where the the rebels get this?

I have had some discussions with PRC nationals about this kind of stuff.

They are as naive as most US liberals and don’t think that any of these nations would ever hurt them, especially after all they’ve done for them.

Hong Kongers are the worst about this. They will glibly take a tour into a really dangerous area because, and they’ve told me this, “We’re not Americans, nobody hates us”

China is about to find out in the next few years that part of the job description of a Super Power is being hated
