Herpes-infected monkeys terrorize Florida
New York Post ^ | 09/12/13 | Natalie O'Neill

Beware of the monkeys! Hundreds of rare wild monkeys — some carrying herpes — are on the loose in Florida after a tour guide brought the spunky critters to the state long ago. Wildlife officials said that three pairs of Rhesus monkeys were transported to a park near Ocala in the 1930s by tour operator Colonel Tooey after a “Tarzan” flick sparked a fascination with the creature. But the breed has since boomed and more than 1,000 of the monkeys now live in the state, wildlife officials say. State officials have caught more than 700 of the monkeys in the past decade — most of which tested positive for the herpes-B virus. Wildlife officials now consider the monkeys a public health hazard. Current Silver River tour operator Captain Tom O’Lenick, 65, defended transporting the animals, claiming people love them. “Everybody who comes on the river for a tour wants to see the monkeys,” O’Lenick said.

At lease they aren’t carrying hand grenades....yet.

Putin was just kidding. They're too busy distributing land mines and practicing screaming, "Allahu akbar!" to work on their hand grenade skills.

Herpes-infected monkeys? Keep distance and there'll be no problem. The ones with grenades are more troublesome....

(yes, I know this one's a chimp)

And why does it matter if monkeys have herpes simplex?

Because the simian version of herpes infection is generally fatal to humans.

Even with prompt treatments (Acyclovir, etc.) the odds of full recovery are dicey.

The monkeys were released at Silver Springs Park, a private attraction surrounding Silver Springs BEFORE the Tarzan movies were filmed there.

Silver Springs are the headwaters of the Silver River, a short (about 10 mile), very clear river that flows into the Ocklawaha River, then into the St Johns.

The park itself is private, but you can boat up the river and view the springs, but cannot anchor there. Lots of BIG bass there, but would be very hard to catch due to high water clarity...but the Silver is closed to fishing anyway.

The Ocklawaha flows through the Ocala Nat'l Forest, some of the wildest and prettiest areas of the state.

Bill Clinton has herpes on his lip in that photo. It’s cropped down from a larger version of Bill with Bono.

You’re going to wand to teleport yourself to my computer and murder me. A couple of day ago I was in my local Gander Mountain and they had multiple 1,400 round buckets of Remington high velocity .22 lr, one of which I bought for $69.99 before tax. Since I’ve been buying up .22 lr here and there, that brought me up to about 4,300 rounds of assorted brands. Feeling that to be enough for the time being, I didn’t buy the additional bucket I could have. Have a nice day.
