Assad says US must stop military threats, and Israel must sign WMD treaties

Syria’s President Bashar Assad on Thursday demanded that Israel ratify international treaties on non-proliferation of nonconventional weapons, and that the US promise not to attack his regime, as he set conditions for a negotiated resolution of the crisis over his chemical weapon.

Assad said he would submit data on his country’s chemical weapons stockpile a month after signing an international convention banning the arms, adding that it was Russia, and not the US, that was making a negotiated solution possible. His comments were believed to mark Assad’s first formal acknowledgement that he has chemical weapons.

Calling a month wait the “standard process,” Assad said his country would abide by agreements, but said that such a process is “two-sided” and indicated it would only work if the US halts its threats of military action against Syria, if Washington does not arm Syrian rebels, and if Israel also ratifies weapons ban conventions.

“When we see that the United States really wants stability in our region, and will stop threatening and striving to attack, and will stop providing weapons to the terrorists, then we will consider that we can carry out these necessary processes to the end,” he said.

Speaking to Russia’s state-run Rossiya-24 TV, he added that any war against Syria would destroy the whole region.

“If we want stability in the Middle East, all the countries in the region should stick to [international] agreements,” he said. “And Israel is the first state that should do so, since Israel possessed nuclear, chemical, biological and all other kinds of weapons of mass destruction.”

It seems Assad is reaching for just a bit too much too quickly. If he’s not careful he might end up blowing the deal by asking for too much at one time.

Are you kidding me? Do you seriously think the clown prince in the oval office ever intended to do anything to begin with?

All zero will do is dither more and do even less now that putin has upstaged him. He gave up the initiative and has made the US a second rate player in the world.

Do you suppose anyone in DC was awake during the Saddam “negotiating” period? Or do you suppose they were all too busy marching around singing The Internationale?

Wow. He's making Beavis and Butthead look like even bigger jackwagons. Think they'll do anything about it?

Me neither.

I doubt Assad really believes that this will happen, however, it puts the US in the position of looking like massive hypocrites if they pursue the use of force over chemical weapons. The Obamateur has been outmaneuvered yet again.

Well, I am enjoying the nose tweaking Putin and Assad are giving the Zero King. I'm sure the "news" media are all in a huff trying to defend their selected boy-king wannabe, whereas, if Bush were still Prez, the media would be singing Putin's praises, such is the state of the "news" media today.

I'm just cautioning not to push too far too fast as the media will jump on anything to defend the rear they kiss. Now if we could only get some real men in high office instead of those who just like to play pretend at it (then go golfing).

This. In spades.

It started before Benghazi, but there's no end to where anti-American interests will ride Obama's weakness.

I understand the Times of Israel wants Assad gone yesterday, but the contrast between the misleading headline and the content of the article is al Jazeera-worthy.

No doubt. He's acting like O. J. Simpson after his murder acquittal.

Hey Bashir, you're still a murdering thug. Sometimes it's best to just shut up when you're winning.
