After the party broke up, the crowd – mostly of students from the University of Delaware – swelled to 3000, say police...oh big deal - used to happen annually on the Penn campus fifty years ago (my fraternity was tossed off campus for a year after someone - I'm not saying who - almost hit a Philadelphia cop by tossing an empty keg through a window, fortunately open at the time) - outbreaks usually took place routinely on the first warm, sunny Friday afternoon in April - so routinely that they had a name - "Rowbottoms"......

We used to have “white riots” every New Year's Eve in Fort Lauderdale back in the early 70’s.

Ground Zero was the intersection of Las Olas and A1A.

The best bars in that area were “The Button,” “The Elbow Room,” and the “Ocean Mist,” where we hung out on Sunday afternoons, getting “Misted,” and watching awesome bikini contests.

“The Parrot” and “The Zoo” were the two best bars on Lauderdale beach, but they were about 1.5 miles north of Las Olas, just off Sunrise Blvd.

The Lauderdale cops put up with ZERO sh** on New Year's.

When they gave the order to disperse and stop blocking traffic, you had like 15 seconds to run for your life.

Anybody left behind got hosed with tear gas and pepper spray.

There’d be like 20 people laying in the street, writhing and screaming and crying and gasping for air.

The cops just picked them up and shoved them in Paddy Wagons.

The whole beach scene was a lot of fun if you were a 22 year old crazy kid with no responsibilities.

I was in a band called Bad Penny in the ‘80s, and the Ramones were in Louisville KY. I can only guess the date within a year or two. I always thought we were an over-achieving bar band, as we got to do some really cool things like this.
