A Texas-based company that sells wheelchairs and motorized scooters to people with limited mobility announced Friday that it's shutting down for good, following federal scrutiny over its advertising and billing.

There were reports about this scam 10 years ago. It took this long to do something about it.
But critics say the ads convince some seniors that they need a scooter to get around when many don’t.”
...what should the ads say? “We won’t sell you a scooter unless you come crawling in?”
following federal scrutiny over its advertising and billing.
You mean the “free” attached to the adds suggesting that, for those who perhaps were so naive to believe that anything is free, your taxpaying friends and neighbors were willing to buy you a scooter that could be billed to medicare or medicaid.
“We wont sell you a scooter unless you come crawling in?
This mechanic’s creeper isn’t cuttin it anymore.
Why Don’t they just cut a $100,000 check to Organizing for America, like everybody else?
“There were reports about this scam 10 years ago. It took this long to do something about it.”
I don’t need a report to see the obvious. There are some HUD apartments in my community. And, these things are what NEV’s are to the area’s high end subdivisions. See folks using them in grocery stores and big box retail stores all the time hopping up and down from their power chairs to fetch stuff. Young studs going here and there out and about. But, if I were a liberal guess I could rationalize this by saying; if the affluent can have their NEV’s then why can’t the poor ave their power wheel chairs? But, I’m not a liberal - but I am paying for those chairs. So, glad the scam has been busted.
now many retailers, hotel/casinos are providing mobility vehicles to those who did not arrive at the store with one. I have twice seen these guests knocking over displays such as glass bottles of olive oil. They just keep on rolling on by .
Well, they obviously need one and are saving money by doubling up.
I thought these ads almost perfectly illustrated what was wrong with American. That is: “Hey, it’s okay to be lazy lard-ass. In fact, come one in and we’ll enable your sorry a$$ behavior for at Taxpayer expense—no cost to you.”
Are there some people who really need scooters? Sure. But I’ll bet the majority of their customers just like having a scooter status symbol so they don’t have to walk like everyone else. To them, it’s like a low-rent Mercedes.
Old story, was shuttered months ago. The bankruptcy auction was this week, I believe, saw the posting locally.
WHAT?!? Isn't that the whole point of government programs? Here, sign up. You NEED foodstamps. Here, sign up. You NEED free rent for any house or apartment you like. Here, sign up. You NEED to own a house. Here, sign up. You NEED permanent unemployment payments. Here, sign up. You NEED free health care. Here, you NEED free breakfast and lunch for you kids. Here, sign up. Get a note from your doctor that you NEED free air conditioning. Here, sign up. You NEED a free scooter.
Leave these people alone. They are doing what government wants them to do. There must be some hidden agenda in shutting them down.
That’s gotta be one powerful electric motor!
There were still people working at the headquarters until last Friday. That was their last day. Local paper showed them carrying boxes of personal stuff to their cars.
Here's how it works: The Scooter Store runs the ad. Grandma picks up the phone, and a nice man delivers the chair the next day.
Six months later, Grandma gets a bill for $6000, and a note that, with a doctor's signature on the enclosed form, the bill will disappear.
She goes to her family doctor of 40 years in a panic, because she hasn't got near that much money, and, since she's been using the chair those pains in her lower back do seem a little better.
Sometimes, the doctor says, "Sorry you are an idiot, get out of here before I call the Medicare police, I hear they just got a shipment of AR-15s".
Sometimes he doesn't.
What about welfare medicaid?
yes a Physician must sign a form attesting to the need for a power chair.
So, does AAA have to show up with a crane-truck if they get a flat?
Part and parcel of everything that’s wrong with Handout America: everything for free, promoting an entitlement mentality as widely as possible.
Years ago the only disabled people in wheelchairs obviously needed them;today I see lots of grossly obese slugs in powered chairs.
Years ago hunters walked the woods, today they have camo ATVs.
In my high school class of 150 we had ONE really fat girl and ONE really fat guy.Today’s percentage is a BIT higher.
One could be forgiven for thinking Americans are fat and lazy.
The logistics of fixing that flat tire are terrifying. It may need the formation of a special think tank.
Let me guess, they’re heading for the Buffet.
They should be prosecuted because they send the chair then bill the recipient while knowing that Medicare will not be paying for the chair, and the recipient is stuck with the bill.
“yes a Physician must sign a form attesting to the need for a power chair”
I hope they scrutinize a little more closely than the Physicians that attest to your need for medical marijuana. With pot they might just as well put coupons in the newspaper.
As a one-time night stocker, I ran into a couple teens (sons of obama) come in at 2 a.m and start using the store scooters as bumper cars, cruising all over the store at top speed.
I blocked their way (dummies didn’t know how to go into reverse) and told them to get off, that they’re running down the batteries as there would be that many less for people who real who needed them. There was the usual (snickering) response “but I AM disabled!” and refused to move.
A buddy, ex-Recon Vietnam Marine, came over and told them they would REALLY be disabled if they didn’t get the F off. Since there were only two of them against two of us, they obeyed and didn’t show up again - at least not on the Graveyard Shift.
actual they do, you must go to your personal physician and then have a form to be filled out,and you sometime have to go to a special rehab center to be fitter for the chair, the repairs are costly too the tires alone are in the hundreds of $$
