The twenty-nine Piggly Wiggly stores sold by the family-owned company for an unknown sales price shouldn’t result in any closures, the Christian Science Monitor reported on Sept. 14.

Twenty-two of the Piggly Wiggly stores were sold by Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. to Bi-Lo and another seven to Harris Teeter. Harris Teeter itself is in the process of being sold to Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.

My SIL works for PW. He’s worried about his job because he saw this coming. Hope it works out for him.

I thought you said you didn't have anything to do with those Piggly Wigglys?

I don’t like it when I go grocery shopping and find it’s a different store from the last time I went there.

Publix is on the march into North Carolina.

Funny how libtards don't complain when a chain like Publix moves into an area and hurts family owned small business grocery stores...

O' wait...Publix is a great company to work for and the union thugs would be laughed out the front door...

We have a relatively new grocery store chain around here - Aldi.
Their prices are amazing and they have euroweenie junk food (good stuff)! My wife shops it on the way home; I’d shop there if it was in the correct direction.

In NC we shopped mostly at Harris Teeter. When we moved to Ga and started shopping at Publix, our grocery bill was slashed by at least a third. Publix has bogos weekly - the items we use. Publix has THE best bread out of all of the chains in their bakeries. We do not buy our seafood from there- they definitely need to work on that dept. (I refuse to pay $9.99 for ONE small, tired looking tuna steak.)

Not sure what will happen when the dust settles but it should be interesting. I just hope they keep the good things about all the chains.

Piggly Wiggly was the first “supermarket” founded by Clarence Saunders in 1917. Before PW he had a grocery on the square in my little town in TN. Hid name is still very visible on the brick back of the store.

Saunders was a genius who got greedy and lost millions due to a shady stock run up.

Re: Aldi’s- I bought two bags of groceries filled to the top- the paper bags they sell for $.10 each. Cucumbers, tomatoes, artisan lettuce, an eggplant, onions, peppers, mushrooms, apples, bread, other items- and my total for both bags was less than $15. I couldn’t believe it.

Wegmans is doing pretty well. I don't think Wal-Mart is much of a threat to them.

I know someone who works for Whole Foods, and they're going gangbusters.

Are the 29 PW Stores the entire chain? Doesn’t seem like much, or has it shuttered stores over the decades?

Piggly Wiggly was the chain that inspired Sam Walton in the first place.

In some areas, but Piggly Wiggly has stores in many (or most) small towns in several southern states, towns too small to ever support a Walmart.

Downsizing must have been going on for some time. I remember PW stores in the upper Midwest not that long ago.

Piggly Wiggly and Food Lion seem to have both gone to the markets too small for walley world similar to the IGA’s.

No, those were just stores owned by a couple of owners in the Carolinas. There are hundreds of PW stores all over the South and in some border areas.

That’s Piggly Wiggly Carolinas, regional hq in North Charkeston, SC. The sale doesn’t affect PW in other states. There are far more than 29 total.
