Big Brother Is Watching You Swipe: The NSA’s Credit Card Data Grab
Time ^ | Dave Clarke

The National Security Agency isn't just snooping into phone and online communications. It also appears to be keeping a close eye on credit card transactions. Why? And what can they see?

The presumed purpose of NSA's credit card tracking is to help it stop terrorism. Agents hope to ferret out terrorists who are buying bomb ingredients, visiting hotbeds of radicalism, and moving funds illicitly. But the program's reach is so broad, some say it will inevitably sweep up purchases made by innocent American citizens, as well....

Technically, there are safeguards in place to keep American citizens out of the NSA's dragnet, but that's not to say the agency wouldn't turn over dirt dug up on an American citizen over to a sister agency like the FBI. "I think it's important that we don't lose focus on the bigger picture," Carr says. "The NSA is just one agency."

"The ability to mine credit--and I'm assuming debit--card transactions would give the government broad powers to closely monitor and profile the day-to-day activities of a majority of Americans," Krebs says....

I’m sure they’d never stoop to seeing who’s buying firearms and ammunition.

Yup, we’ve been using cash for lots of transactions for years. It wasn’t a ‘prepper’ thing. We follow the Dave Ramsey plan and having anonymity while purchasing is just one of the side benefits.

Been doing that for some time now. My goal is to be as invisible as possible. It's a hobby. Like prepping.

Agree! Just use cash for everything. These days everything is under watch by our overlords. Unfortunately won’t be long before they outlaw cash transactions of course... I’ve read it in the Bible...

Hell, barter is looking better and better. No sales tax, either.

And in the coming crash, barter will be all we have. So get good at doing or making something valuable and saleable.

Just sayin'...

I’m sure they’d never stoop to seeing who’s buying firearms and ammunition.

I am a shooter and have a range in my backyard. I live in a rural area and have several acres of land to shoot on. I buy my ammunition by the case on the internet as this is the cheapest ammo. I shoot a lot.

I do not even hunt anymore but have no problems with hunters. The only thing that I kill on my land is vermin such as coyotes and raccoons. The rattlesnakes are left alone so long as they are not around the house. I have killed a few rattlers that tried to take up residence in my garage. Those that are not near my home are left alone. I do not like killing the coyotes but they have killed my pets so they have to go. Raccoons need to die. They are vicious and aggressive toward my pets and also carry rabies. My neighbor takes a few deer on my land every year and I get free venison, and it tastes great.

Without any doubt my purchases of bulk ammo put me on the "watch list." We are living in interesting times and this is not good. I am a patriot and conserver of the land and environment that also enjoys shooting and also an ardent supporter of the second amendment. Why should I be on a watch list?

Why should I be on a watch list?

1.) The feral government is afraid of you.
2.) The feral government hates you.
3.) The feral government both hates and fears you.

It could just be somebody who named his wifi access point “FBI Surveillance 501” to discourage hacking, the same way some people name their encrypted digital vault “Porn Stash” to conceal what kind of information is actually hidden.
