Delegations from the Taliban have several times met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide for secret negotiations in Norway.
Eide confirms that Norway has had a key role in negotiations between the Taliban and the central Afghanistan government.
As a result of the secret negotiations, the Taliban will open an official office in Doah, Afghan president Hamid Karzai has confirmed.
The news was announced on the same day that Afghanistan took over responsibility for the country's entire security system. The Taliban's new office will be a place to talk peace, NRK reports, and the two parties will meet in Doha in the next few days to discuss the future of Afghanistan.
"This is one of the top secret processes that we have been involved in," Eide says,
Most of the negotiations have taken place in Doha, and representatives for the Taliban have paid regular visits to the city. What has been kept top secret is that these conversations have also taken place in Norway.
However, while Norwegian diplomacy has worked quietly to bring Taliban in to negotiating table, Norwegian forces have been involved in combat operations in Afghanistan.
Barth Eide says that the question of whether or not this is problematic has been asked many times throughout the process.
"But an almost united international community has for many years meant that we should initiate conversations with the Taliban. It's been clear that a full military victory where the Taliban is completely removed has simply been impossible to achieve," the Norwegian Foeign Minister concludes.

The entire war in Afghanistan was pointless and all of the lives we lost were for naught. The Taliban should have been nuked into oblivion. Why Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld did not nuke the hell out of the entire country is beyond me. This is just disgusting.

Yep. There was absolutely NO DISCUSSION or REASONING as to why Tora Bora was not nuked like Hiroshima or Nagasaki was the week of 9/11. The likely reason I can only think of as to why they didn’t is because of the fallout hitting neighboring countries and pissing off Pakistan big time...oh and destroying the global supply of heroin.

Nuke Afghanistan? Hell we should have nuked Saudi Arabia for funding all the whabbiis and other radicals. Either that or hit Saudi Aarabia in the pocketbook HARD for their role in 911. 100 oil wells for each death from 911. We should have used it as an excuse to bleed the saudis dry so they would have no more money to fund their little jihad by mercenary proxy.

The infrastructure in Afghanistan is minimal. Take that out (dams, power plants, irrigation, electrical distribution, etc.), and put them back into the stone age.
Then, send in crop dusters with defoliants just before the poppy fields mature. Ruin that year's crop, and repeat as many years as necessary. That cuts off their major source of income.
Optionally, drop bunker-busters or shoot Hellfires to seal up the caves in Tora Bora. Use Predators to monitor human traffic and watch for the infrared signatures to disappear.
Afghanistan would cease to exist as a country, and the Taliban would be too busy trying to survive.
