OTTAWA - At least 27 fraudsters had their Canadian citizenship yanked since the federal government announced it was expanding its crackdown on citizenship fakers last September, QMI Agency has learned.
"Between 1976 and 2011 we did 60 of these (revocations)," Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said Saturday. "In one year, essentially, we have done close to 30, so the pace is picking up because we have taken a much stronger stand in saying that Canadian citizenship is not for sale."
Canada's crackdown on up to 1,800 citizens who'd never set foot in Canada or received their citizenship with false documents began in July 2011 when Jason Kenney was still immigration minister.
He announced an expansion to more than 3,000 cases a year ago.
The new minister says the crackdown continues, but cautions that "just because an investigation has been opened, by no means revocation of citizenship will take place."
Alexander points out that revocation is the final step of a process that begins with RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency investigations, and could include a suspected fraudster's appeal to cabinet or a lengthy Federal Court case.
He says seeing about 30 revocations in twelve months is a good result.
"There may be some room for that rate of revocation to grow, but we'll have to see," said Alexander.
In the meantime, investigators continue to track down paperwork often produced with the help of a third party, possibly decades ago.
"So, there was, and I fear still is to some extent, an industry associated with this," he said.
