Obama Says GOP Debt Ceiling Demands Are an Assault on U.S. ‘Constitutional Structure’
The Blaze ^ | Sep. 15, 2013 | Oliver Darcy

Posted on 09/16/2013 11:17:46 AM PDT by xzins

President Barack Obama said in an interview which aired on Sunday that he “will not negotiate” on the debt ceiling with the GOP.

“What I haven’t been willing to negotiate, and I will not negotiate, is on the debt ceiling,” Obama told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in an interview on “This Week.”

The comments come on the eve of another fiscal showdown, where House Republicans, seeking to defund and delay the implementation of the president’s landmark healthcare law, hope to negotiate concessions from the White House.

“If we continue to set a precedent in which a president … is in a situation in which each time the United States is called upon to pay its bills, the other party can simply sit there and say, ‘Well, we’re not going to put – pay the bills unless you give us … what we want,’ that changes the constitutional structure of this government entirely,” Obama said.

Obama said he is drawing a red line.

“What has never happened in the past was the notion that in exchange for fulfilling the full faith and credit of the United States, that we are wiping away let’s say major legislation like the health care bill,” he said.

“Never in history have we used just making sure that the U.S. government is paying its bills as a lever to radically cut government at the kind of scale that they’re talking about,” he added.

This seems strange to me.

The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the authority to initiate any bill having anything to do with spending. When it comes to spending, the Constitution says, it’s got to pass “The Peoples’ Representatives” first.

So, how is saying, “no more debt; we’re sick and tired of debt” an assault on the Constitution?

SOMEONE should be saying that.

Can you imagine your family members telling you that refusing to go into additional debt is an assault on the family structure.

“But, kids, we can’t afford a new car.”

“Tough, Dad. If you don’t get a new car, then you are assaulting us, and we’re calling Child Services.”

“Hi, Mr X, this is Child Services: We’re sending the SWAT teams over. I understand you’ve been assaulting your kids.”

Yet the legislative branch can ignore any laws they don’t like.

And implement “EOs” for laws they wished they had.

Exactly. The House’s power of the purse was adapted from the Brit House of Commons. It is designed for the people’s reps to stymie the executive when necessary.

Obama, what the House is saying: we aren't giving the authority to continue to print money, without some reduction in spending.

Obamacare has become a black hole of additional spending, despite your hollow claims that it would save money. So, that's a place to start.

If you don't want to do it with Obamacare, then it's time to come up with a significant cut elsewhere.

“Obama said he is drawing a red line. “

Oh my god, he is drawing a red line. Well I guess if he is drawing a red line, we should give up.

Given that the budget ends in two weeks and the debt limit just weeks after that congress has not actually committed the spending for what Obama calls ‘pay the bills’ yet.

Obama is actually demanding the spending be passed in a CR so he can argue that now congress must ‘pay the bills’ they racked up by extending the debt.

What if GOP told MSM they would not ‘negotiate’ like Obama gets away with?? (he only negotiates with those pledged to kill us)

Can you imagine?

He’ll negotiate with Assad, with Putin, with Ahmadinejad, et al, but he won’t with the GOP.

Whatever....

This POS is so treasonous. Why has he not been arrested yet?

The former University instructor in Constitutional Law appears to be a bit confused as to where the Power of the Purse lies.

He’ll not negotiate.

The bigger question is whether the House will cave. They are terribly afraid of bad press.

But, the truth is that they DON’T have to NEGOTIATE what Obama will do. Since they’re in the driver’s seat on spending, all that have to do is TO DO what they’ll do.

"President Putin, there's a call from the United States for you...someone named Boh-ner, that's what it sounds like to me. He needs advice on circumventing another one of Obama's red lines. Will you take the call?"

"He's very persistent...now he's crying about a Cruz missile that he can't shake off...no, this Boh-ner man doesn't appear to be exceptional, not in the American sense."

Sadly but seriously this is exactly how the Left looks at the goings on in Washington. Its not their fault. Its the fault of those “Waskely Wepublicans”.

The Constitution says:

Article 1 SECTION. 8.

The Congress shall have Power... ...To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;

They are also, therefore, empowered to NOT borrow money.

The president is NOT empowered to do either.

Mr. Obama sounds like an hysterical jackass. The fundamental structure of the Constitution is not only NOT being altered, it is actually being adhered to (by congress).

Cutting government because we can’t spend unlimited amounts is unconstitutional for sure. A President should be able to do what he wants without the constraints of reality.
