A new report claims that the Syrian rebels are more jihadist and hardline than the Obama administration has asserted. Jamie Dettmer reports from Lebanon.
Nearly half of the rebel forces battling to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad are jihadist or hardline Islamists, a British defense consultancy has warned its private clients, thus contradicting claims by Obama administration officials that opposition ranks are predominately moderate.
According to a study by IHS Janes for commercial clients, the rebels number around 100,000 fighters and are spread across more than 1,000 fragmented bands that are often at odds with each other and increasingly engaged in infighting over war spoils and the control of seized propertyfrom oil wells to state bakeriesas they seek revenue.
IHS Janes Charles Lister, an insurgency expert and author of the analysis, estimates that around 10,000 are jihadists fighting for al-Qaeda affiliates (the Islamic State of Iraq and the smaller Jabhat al-Nusra), while another 30,000 to 35,000 are hardline Islamists, who have less of a global jihad vision but share a focus on establishing an Islamic state to replace Assad. Another 30,000 or so are more moderate Muslim Brotherhood Islamists.
He estimates that moderate nationalist fighters number only about 20,000, with the Kurdish separatists being able to field only 5,000 to 10,000. In recent weeks, clashes have increased in northeast Syria between al Qaeda-affiliated jihadist rebels and Syrian Kurds aligned to Kurdish separatists in Turkey. The jihadists have sought to exert more control over their enclaves, while Kurdish militants have tried to snatch oil wells currently run by the al Qaeda affiliates

"I just don't agree that a majority are al-Qaeda and the bad guys," Kerry said in testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "That's not true."
not to worry Obama’s peeps are “vetting” who gets US weapons
kinda like they did in Libya/Benghazi and “fast and Furious”
Everything obozo does is for the caliphate, mark my words...
Well, Gor, they are not Card Carrying Democrats... but they are damn close--
Well you can see how they come to their insane conclusion- they consider the Muslim Brotherhood ‘moderate’. That means they kiss you before they force you into dhimmitude.
The other half consists of Sunni warlords and their various minions connected by tribal affiliation seeking to carve out fiefs from which to extract monopoly rents: i.e. protection money. I guess the definition of a Sunni moderate to State is a Sunni who only wants to make serfs or Dhimmis out of the unfortunates under his power. An extremist Sunni is one who seeks economic and religious domination of the population. A moderate says, “your money or your life.” An extremists says, “convert and submit to the will of Allah and then give me your money or you will lose your head and have the execution shown on heavy rotation on You-Tube.”
Well, let's all get on board with the Arab Spring!
They don’t saw off your head with a dull knife.
They use a sharp one.
70%+ are between the muslim brotherhood and Al Qaeda.
0bama is sending them guns.
“Just How Extremist Are the Rebels in Syria?”
Jeff Foxworthy...paging Jeff Foxworthy...
They’re moslems. Do we need to know any more? By command of their scriptures they are radical jihadists
Long before the Syrian Civil War, the West dreamnt up the concept of “Hard-line” vs. “Moderate” in the Islamic and Arabic world, this was a convenient way to term savages and make them more palatable to Western policy dreamers.
This incorrect and inappropriate terminology started with the PLO.
For years, Arafart’s FATAH movement was called a TERRORIST group. The magically, after around 1983 with the emergence of the Hizbollah in Lebanon and the HAMAS movement within the Palestinian territories, suddenly FATAH and Arfart became “moderates”. They're still calling Arafart’s successor, Abu Mazen a “Moderate”.
After the 1982 Lebanon war and the later oft-hailed Oslo Peace Accords of 1993,suddenly Arafart became a “moderate” and a Nobel Prize winning “statesman”, he even married Suha, a woman to show he was a |normal” statesman alongside Clinton and Rabin even though everybody knows he was a Pedophile preferring young boys.
This was the beginning of the end of clarity.
In Syria today there are no moderates or if there are the ranking system is as follows:
Violent misconduct in treating POWs and the killing and simple torture of combatants and civilians will earn you a simple WAR CRIMES title by the UN. You can still be a “moderate” though.
Killing an army force will get you a “freedom fighter” or “militant” label.
Wanton killing can also get you a “militant” label but perhaps not the “terrorist” title.
If you take a person and shoot them in the back of the head you get the “cold blooded killer” honor or maybe even an “insurgent” title.
If you cut off an innocent civilian's head on TV you get the “Jihadist” or “Salafist” Muslim radical title.
If you slowly saw off an innocent person's head you get the noble “Al-Qaeida”, “Mujahadeen” or “Al_Nasura” award.
If you mutilate a dead corpse or eat it's heart you are a “rebel”.
If you blow up a building with people in it, you may be an “insurgent”.
If you blow up a building with people in it, and yourself, in a car you may be an “suicide bomber”.
If you blow yourself up with a TNT belt you get to be called a "homicide bomber" “Shahid” or “Martyr”.
The again, if you are an innocent Muslim bystander who happens to get blown to bits during an attack on an Infidel, you can also get the honorary “Shahid” title.
My point is that the blurring of the term “terrorist” and “terror” since that label was applied to the PLO, Black September, PFLP, Bahder_Meinhoff, Weatherman Underground and hundreds of other murderous groups has led us away from the truth.
No, one man's freedom fighter is not another man's terrorist. Terror and murderous savages should not be a blurred concept and that is what we have done for the last 45 years. We have confused the issue with our stupid PC terminology to the point where we can;t even say a “terror attack” or the “War on terror” anymore. This lack of clarity only fuels our enemies.
It all started with the grandaddy of modern Terror personalities, Yassir Arafart and his FATAH movement.
Ahhh, now I understand why these people are worth American blood and treasure... thanks for clearing it up. We're backing the people who behead others, but NOT the ones who post the beheadings on youtube...
Kerry is a bad guy, so his word is worthless.
