A travel trailer and camper manufacturer announced Friday that it will lay off 163 workers and close its Clackamas plant.

Dutchmen Manufacturing Inc., a Goshen, Ind.-based company, said in a notice to workers that layoffs will begin Nov. 15. The plant is at 12618 S.E. Jennifer St.

"This action will affect the entire facility and is expected to be permanent," the company wrote in a Tuesday letter to Clackamas County and state labor officials.

A separate notice to employees dated Friday suggested that those laid off in Clackamas will not have the right to bump employees elsewhere. "As you may expect, the decision to close the plant was very difficult. Dutchmen wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to you for your loyal service to the company."

A spokeswoman for Clackamas Community College said an information session about career resources and training for the workers is scheduled Tuesday. Dutchmen manufactures several major brands of recreational vehicles, including Coleman, Denali, Dutchmen, Infinity, Komfort and Razorback. Is Oregon a high cost of doing business state? I know most RV manufacturing is concentrated here in Indiana, where there is a critical mass of component suppliers and plenty of surplus labor.

When asked by the media about this closing, the White House said, on behalf of Pres. Obama, “Yes we did”.

I don’t know if Oregon is a high cob state or not. But, read an article about this and apparently a major factor in relocating had to do with delivery cost to distributors from Oregon. So, apparently, Monaco is shifting their manufacturing to regional plants to keep this cost competitive. Kinda makes sense to me.

Can you blame them? If I owned a business in the Obama age, I’d close down too, and hold a conference call with my employees explaining why. Sooner or later, people will get the drift.

I worked just around the corner from there at Fred Meyer for about 20 years. Sad they’re losing those jobs to Obamanomics.

You said it before I did, Uncle Miltie, and said it in fewer words than I'd have employed.
