Cleveland Clinic to cut $330 million from next year's budget, may cut jobs
The Plain Dealer ^ | 9/18/2013 | Brie Zeltner

About 60 percent of the hospital system’s costs are in labor, salaries and benefits, said spokeswoman Eileen Sheil, and “there’s only so much you can do with non-staff cost cutting.

“Healthcare reform has really changed things, and the burden of cost is going to be falling on patients,” she said. “We want to make sure we can keep care affordable....”

...Sheil said the Clinic has not been filling vacant positions in many departments for a while, and some departments may be able to meet their targeted cuts by attrition and non-staff cuts.

“Other places might have to look at reducing staff if they can’t make the targets without cutting in other areas,” she said.

The Clinic, which had about $6 billion in operating revenue last year, is the region’s largest employer with about 44,000 employees.

Cleveland Clinic does not really operate off endowment for operating expenses. Rather, endowment is used for new construction. This is true at most nonprofit institutions.

What is happening is that they will be reimbursed at a lesser amount for procedures under Obamacare whether it be Medicare, Medicaid or insurance exchanges or due to government controls on private plans.

Thanks for the ping.
Michele Bachmann was just on Cavuto saying that people are contacting reps and making their voices heard because they are getting bumped from health care and/ or part time hours.

“Healthcare reform has really changed things, and the burden of cost is going to be falling on patients,” she said.”
Uh? Imagine that.”

i’m thinking they should have said, only on patients who work and pay their own premiums and copays.

that's something id venture most people do not know. I certainly did not. one of the TV news readers on Fox the other day said of Obamacare: "I don't know WHAT it is". I believe he is not alone.

I work in a large National laboratory. Many facilities in all states . We were informed that our Medicare reimbursement is being reduced by 50%. Along with the reduction in preventative care tests (yep, another Obama whopper of a lie.......we will NOT be having MORE preventative care tests!) watch the medical labs start layoffs, too.

On preventative care, I knew something bad was coming when they told us women no longer needed Pap smears and mammograms every year, that once every other year would do. they fought and fought for years to get those tests paid for every year and the results of that were positive. now Suddenly every two years is good enough. they are so Full of xxIT!

Of course these stories don’t get national play. The national media/entertainment complex is a subsidiary of the democrat-communist party, and serves as it’s propaganda organ. You want the truth about what’s going on in our country, you have to go to the foreign press.

So sorry to tell you........women aged 18-49, it is every 3 years for a pap; for women 49-65, it is every 5 years and for women, aged 65 ad over, only if you are having symptoms. Sadly, for women over 65, if they are having symptoms, they are in very bad shape. The reason women over age 65 survive gyn cancers is that the cells can shed long before there are symptoms. If there are symptoms, the women will likely not survive. I have heard that mammograms are not paid for until age 50. Most of the women I know with breast cancer were diagnosed well under age 50. But let's face it, when you are no longer working, i e no longer paying into the system for Healthcare, you are not worth spending money on to keep you alive. It is a new country, Obamaland.

Walgreen announced 160,000 lay offs.

Holy cow, Wiki says they have 176,000 employees. Leaves about 2 workers per location?

The Cleveland Clinic is one of the premier medical institutions in the world.

Indeed it is. The Left is nothing but destructive!

Obama touted the Cleveland Clinic as the model for what could be done -— with healthcare reform, never mind that the Cleveland Clinic, (a physician-owned entity), is not allowed under Obamacare.

What a clever way to keep the Cleveland Clinic silent while he tried to pitch it to congress and the public.

Today, they suffer for their silence.

Weak leadership at any level is intolerable.

I’ve been in several VA Hospitals over the past 9 years. There are lots of empty rooms. Some hallways feel deserted. I see this coming to lots of civilian hospitals.

I have a very close relative who is a nurse. She was constantly screaming that obamacare will provide more tests earlier and that’s what is needed. I don’t ever have any conversations with her so I don’t know what she will think about this. She’ll probably say “BUSH LIED ABOUT WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION!”

They’re trying to reach their goal through attrition? There is no attrition. These days, if you’ve got a job, you don’t quit it.
