Desperate thousands try to escape cut-off Acapulco

By sunset Tuesday night, 24 hours after most vacationers were supposed to be back, less than 700 people had been flown out to Mexico City. Many times that number waited miserably on the runway or, worse, with thousands of other sweating, blank-eyed people in a roughly quarter-mile-long line outside the base.

"It's horrible. We haven't eaten anything since nine in the morning," said Lizbeth Sasia, a 25-year-old teacher from Cuernavaca. "They keep telling us we'll be on the next flight, but the next flight never comes."

Countdown until the Obama administration offers to let some of those affected by the storm emigrate to the US as hardship refugees.

Was in Acapulco for two weeks one time. The hotels are at the bottom of steep hills, by the beach. We drove up the steep hill and I think that was to go to some fancy restaurant. It appears those hills became loose and slid down. There are houses in those hills already nearly hanging off the edge, so a slide would take them down.

There must be massive damage.

1. When you travel, always take food with you and keep it until you get home in case you might get in trouble during the trip and have to have it. I always carried a jar of peanut butter, a plastic knife, and box of crackers when we flew to any country, plus always had a bottle of water.
2. Always have a small flashlight.
3. Always have a smallish First Aid Kit which has bandages and antibiotic ointment.

Those three suggestions will keep you safe in most situations. No, you can’t take your AR-15 on a plane.

Hmmm, I wonder how many people are going to learn anything from this lesson in how to handle a SHTF situation?

My guess... Not many.

Thanks. Didn’t know about this. All of the storm news that I have read lately has focused on Colorado.

Would you trust a building in Mexico when the storm surge floods the foundation and starts undermining it? I’ve seen how they’re built and I wouldn’t.

I have traveled to many countries and the first time I didn't carry any survival stuff. Then, I saw a couple who were in our group, and saw her moving some objects in a bag. It was their survival equipment of those items I mentioned in post 23. From that time on, I took stuff and when we would get stranded on the tarmac on a plane that wasn't going to leave for a while due to some problem, we had food and water and first aid equipment.

Always assume something is not going to work right on your trip and protect yourself from these happenings.

I usually pack one bag with nothing but foodstuff because you never know when you might need it and saves on eating out.

My family gives me a hard time for always packing (a huge) box of granola bars...everywhere we go...even when we went overseas. You just never know.

The one time I vacationed in Mexico, a friend had warned me to take a quarter tab of Pepto, every day I was there. Several in our group did suffer from M's Revenge. I, thankfully, did not have to deal with that.

Was so paranoid that I even brushed my teeth with bottled water!

After we left Acapulco, we went to Mexico City. Shortly before that, an earthquake had hit. Some of the downtown buildings were in bad shape. The guide told us the buildings fell down because the construction workers used Styrofoam instead of metal and the foam came apart when the shaking started. I wouldn't go up high in any building in Mexico City or any other Mexican city.

I hear ya. That’s the economical building method I’m talking about. Tall buildings in Mexico scare the carp out of me. Never mind occupying a high floor, I don’t even want to be in the street in the same block.

It is not paranoid to brush your teeth with bottled water in Mexico and a number of other places. I got it in Paris France and again in the south of France. What bothered me was you could never have ice in your drink. I don’t know where I picked up MR in Mexico because I was very careful and got it anyway.

Roger that. I would not go even if someone paid for everything and gave me 100k to spend.

That's not being paranoid; that's just being realistic, particularly around Mexico City.

It doesn't always work but Peptol Bismol is a good idea along with a decent probiotic. Start the latter at least a couple weeks beforehand. The good bacteria will stand ready to fight for real estate with the bad.

I once got very sick on the plane trip down, bizarrely enough.
