Gov. Rick Scott considering executive action to address Common Core controversy

Once a clear Common Core supporter, Scott is in a political bind. Tea party groups, which make up an important part of his base, want Florida to jettison the new standards and tests. But schools across the state are already teaching Common Core, and Republican leaders in the House and Senate are standing behind the benchmarks.

The Common Core standards outline what is expected of students at each grade level but do not include suggestions for books or how teachers should plan their lessons. The benchmarks, created by the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officers, have been approved in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

Scott was not clear on a timeline for executive action. “We’ll do it as quickly as we can coalesce what we think is the right thing to do and still get information from people,” he said.

Why would anyone delay when the facts are clear and growing each day.

Today it is the teaching of the second and third amendments as one, with a changed meaning!

A few days ago it was Russia as a great space program for pages and pages and a few lines about the US.

My grandson came home and said, “ We learned about Lincoln today”. He was a bad man and put people in jail without a trial!”

Will this never end?

From other stuff I have seen, this is false.

From where do governors and even mayors get “Executive Order” powers?

Is there a good/bad list regarding Common Core?

Common Core will usurp local control of curriculum

I agree with you 100% ...EXCEPT....

I am sick of otherwise bright conservatives - even ones as brilliant as Mark Levin - lionizing Lincoln, who WAS a monster and our first statist.

Morrill tariffs, suspending habeas corpus, making the states appendages of the federal government rather than sovereign units. He was a bad, bad guy who really started the slide to statism.

Actually, he did.

I hope you tell your grandson that he did put people into prison with no trail.
He was not as great as he’s made out and that teacher got it right.

I’d be more worried about what he is told about how muslims are compared to Christians etc.

LOL correct and the teacher actually surprised me and got that right.

I’m sick of even our side making out that he was a great one for freedom, he put people tino prison with no trail, never had any intention of freeing anyone and even during his proclamation he still said they were free in places he had no control over while he had written that they should not be free in places he did have control over.

I guess I did not make myself clear.

Yes, we told him it was true. We discussed the war and that is tough with family from Alabama and NY at the table! LOL

My point was they discussed nothing good. It was just more attempts to continue breaking down the past of the country and continued attacks against the founders. We have been hearing it from all directions and never with any attempt to discuss how very exceptional the country is...

‘he actually did put people into Prison for speaking out against him and the war.’

In the year 2013 it is easy for us all to look back and take offense at the actions that Lincoln took during the Civil War.

Imagine it’s the year 1860...(hey mom, I went to the store to get a cover for my ipad and the clerk asked me, ‘What’s an ipad?’)

Battles being fought in Virginia could be heard at the White House. There was no, ‘Red’ phone for Lincoln to pick up and get an up to date report on the war.

Suffice it to say, there were reasons why Lincoln took the actions that he did so long ago. Reasons that make no sense to current day modern Americans.

Lincoln was right about one thing though. If the South had
successfully seceded from the union, then there would be no Northern or Southern America today. Once split, England, France, Spain, etal would have chipped away at the two, ‘countries’ until there would be no soverign America today. This is what Lincoln’s vision and strength has given to present day Americans.

Did Lincoln make mistakes? Sure. Let’s be clear on this though, thank God that Lincoln was president.

I’ll be surprised if the USA is what it is today in about a 100 years.

Think it was a Russian years back which said the same thing.

Many muslims in the class...I bet it is not discussed in any way except their contribution to humanity as Obama spoke about.

I was at an assembly and NO pledge was said. The Principal just walked to the microphone and started the program.

The Marching Band does play the Star Spangled Banner before the football games.

I thought liberals LOVED diversity, so why do they want monolithic standards of education instead of letting each state and locality decide it’s curriculum?

Because Common Core is a liberal PC brainwashing Standard and you need monolithic organizations to enforce a standard propaganda set.

...even during [Lincoln's] proclamation he still said [the slaves] were free in places he had no control over while he had written that they should not be free in places he did have control over.

Yes, The Great Emancipator once declared--quite candidly--that he would do whatever might be necessary to preserve the union, whether that meant freeing all of the slaves, freeing none of the slaves, or freeing some of the slaves, while leaving others in bondage.

That hardly sounds like a principled position.

Moreover, Lincoln was far from color-blind: He even asserted that "[t]here is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality."

And these (rather toxic) views were not merely the views of Lincoln during the 1850s--at the time of the heralded Lincoln-Douglas debates--but during the 1860s also...
