BBC News, Washington - One of the first teams of heavily armed police to respond to Monday's shooting in Washington DC was ordered to stand down by superiors, the BBC can reveal.
A tactical response team of the Capitol Police, a force that guards the US Capitol complex, was told to leave the scene by a supervisor instead of aiding municipal officers.
The Capitol Police department has launched a review into the matter.
Aaron Alexis, 34, killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard.
"I don't think it's a far stretch to say that some lives may have been saved if we were allowed to intervene," a Capitol Police source familiar with the incident told the BBC.

There are a lot of individual warriors who would be willing to do whatever it takes. But there are a lot of people in leadership positions who are too scared to say “Go”. And that problem, of course, starts at the top.
sounds like Benghazi to me
That stands to reason. After all, if not enough people are killed by a mentally disturbed person carrying a gun recommended by Plugs Biden, then Soetoro won’t have a good enough case to shred the Second Amendment. Somehow word got out that the shooter only brought a shotgun to the Navy Yard.
They want to drill with all the hi-speed kook gear, but then TAKE NO RISKS...?
The public puts up with this war footing under the premise that it provides genuine security enhancement —that is is something other than play time for Perpetual Adolescents.
Are any ADULTS in charge, here...?
And that’s actually the GOOD possibility.
The really bad one is that for political purposes they WANTED a high body-count.
Now WHERE have you heard THAT before..?
That’s what I thought.
Seems to be a pattern these days.....
What’s wrong with this country???
First of all we have military bases where military personal are not trusted to have weapons!!?? Insanity....
This is kind of what happened at the Columbine High School shooting. Police responded quickly, but were told to stand down until SWAT arrived. Meanwhile, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold didn’t stand down, and kept shooting people.
As the anti-gun zealots like to say, “I don’t think adding more guns to the situation solves anything.” (s)
GMTA, and I suspect we're not the only ones who think that....
If they had been told there were family pets inside, nothing would have held them back.
Someone is in deep dodo.
There are a lot of individual warriors who would be willing to do whatever it takes. But there are a lot of people in leadership positions who are too scared to say Go. And that problem, of course, starts at the top.
I believe that's also known as "trickle-down cowardice."
Whose watch did this occur on? Who benefits from a maximum number of victim deaths?
The simplest answer is usually the correct one.
DC Chief of Police told to stand down so the body count was high for purposes of gun control?
Well, look at Fast and Furious.
That's why the most effective people in a crisis are usually the ones who find themselves in the situation on their own (as opposed to as a "first responder"), who put their own skills and wits to work under duress, and who don't answer to a chain of command.
Can you think of one that isn't?
The Progressives have run out of stupid deadly anti American stunts so they are repeating the old ones now: reprise of Ft Hood.
Someone should have let a dog loose Iin there, the Swat Team would have then stormed in after it, shooting away
Didn’t one person (a DC rep, perhaps?), the day of the murders, say that DC was “the safest city...” Rainbows, lollipops and sunshine.
Like Benghazi, ya think?
Like the teenager in Nawlins who hotwired a school bus and single handedly evacuated more people from Hurricane Katrina than the entire government.
No one is in deep doo doo over Benghazi.
...mostly at the insistence of their unions, resulting in mostly useless paycheck-grubbers when the chips are on the line.
Probably someone along the way was hoping it was a white Tea Partier. But either way...never let dead bodies...err...a crisis ...go to waste.
Unless, of course, it's like Benghazi where the good guys were hung out to dry and died and the other good guys that tried to tell the truth are intimidated, threatened and punished.
Or the leadership wanted mass casualties.
“Someone is in deep dodo.”
No. Wrong. No one is in deep dodo: these are government workers. They can’t be fired, they can’t be sued, they can’t have their benefits/pensions taken away. They’ll retain their clearances.
Reprimand, perhaps, followed by transfer to cushy job in some other department, or maybe disability for PTSD.
So military were carrying guns with no ammo and the ones with ammo are told not to shoot...
What’s scarrier is that they obeyed.
Liberalism and irrational fear of self-protection coupled with hatred of the US equals the US right now
