Assad: One year, $1 bn needed to destroy chem arms

Defiant strongman Bashar Al-Assad promised he would surrender Syria's chemical weapons but warned it would take at least a year to do so and cost one billion dollars.

His latest appearance came as UN envoys debated a draft resolution that would enshrine a joint US-Russian plan to secure and neutralize his banned weapons in international law.

In a confident interview with US network Fox News, Assad insisted that Syria was not gripped by civil war but was the victim of infiltration by foreign-backed Al-Qaeda fighters.

Putin is laughing his ass off right now. The soviets did the same thing to us at the end of the Cold War.

I think it's reasonable. We got to do whatever we wanted to the Axis Powers at the end of WWII. But the cost was 400K dead GI's and 2 years worth of GDP. We could have imposed something similar on the Soviets - but probably only after we nuked their cities and had ours burned to the ground. Bottom line is that it was a bargain compared to the alternative. They were also good faith payments of a kind, made to reassure a crumbling superpower with the ability to annihilate us that the West wasn't out to get them.

We’ll HAVE to raise the budget by a billion bucks to pay for this.

A whole laundry list of countries wanted us to jump in. They should pay for this. The EU, the Gulf states, Israel, et al.

Let the Saudi’s and Moslem Brotherhood foot the bill since it’s their thugs in Syria....they control the Jihadists so they need their monetary skin in this......the US shouldn’t pay a dime to this...not one red cent!

Putin is laughing his ass off right now.

Get out your crayons and color me surprised, eh, RinaseaofDs? To be fair, I'm sure Putin had faith all along Assad was bright enough to learn the words to the Gimme, gimme, gimme song:

Gimme, gimme, gimme!
Gimme, gimme, gimme right now or else!
Gimme, gimme, gimme!
Gimme, gimme, gimme right now or else!
To be both fair and realistic: how much is a billion dollars any more, anyway? Isn't a billion today about the same as 100 million a few years ago? It's all just imaginary money, isn't it?

And once they get back to Iraq, Iraq can hand them back over to the CIA, where they got them from, during the Iraq/Iran war, when Saddam was useful.

But, but, but....they were children. We have to put our children into debt slavery so these a_holes can kill each other one at a time rather than in bunches.

In the meantime Assad can wipeout the US/NATO Al-CIA-duh foreign mercenaries that are slaughtering Christians and civilians all over Syria. Without US airpower the poor little darlings are done for, no matter how many weapons the US taxpayer supplies them.

I hope the Syrian Army shows them no mercy.

We print $3B from thin air every day. After Bernanke’s comments yesterday, we’ll be doing this for the foreseeable future too.

The USA, robbed by two robbers who hate each other and accuse each other of lying about being thieves. The GOP and the Socialists/Communists (called the Democrats in the USA)

My worst fear used to be a nuclear strike on DC that would decapitate the country. Now I’m revulsed by furtively wishing it would happen.
