BERLIN—Germany's most prominent Green politician had to make something clear on national television this week: "There are no legal and no tolerable forms of sex with children," said Jürgen Trittin, co-leader of the Green campaign.
Coming just days before national elections, the embarrassing episode has deepened the impression that the Greens have hit a low point after years of helping to define politics here with a message of environmentalism, pacifism and social justice.
At issue now is their tolerance decades ago of groups within their ranks that wanted to legalize pedophilia. The party says it broke with that position in 1989. But it has resurfaced at the most inconvenient time possible.
The weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, required reading for the German intelligentsia, highlighted the long-simmering controversy on its front page Sunday with a jarring illustration of an adult's sneakers, a child's sneakers, and the Greens' logo.
On Monday, a political scientist hired by the party to investigate its past published a report that ensnared Mr. Trittin, a 59-year-old former environment minister and one of the Greens' two lead candidates in this Sunday's parliamentary election.
Franz Walter wrote in the Tageszeitung, a Berlin daily, that Mr. Trittin was listed as the person responsible for the 1981 platform of a local Greens group.
The platform included the party's then-demand that sex between adults and children be made legal, as long as no violence or threats of violence were involved. Some Greens-allied groups argued at the time that legalizing pedophilia was part of rebuilding postwar German society into something more open and just.
Mr. Trittin repeated in a swirl of public appearances this week that he had long ago disavowed that position. He said the language at issue in the 1981 document reflected the Greens' national platform at the time

Four to eight years ago...the Greens were pulling fifteen percent of the national vote. The SPD (the German version of the Democratic Party)....is barely getting a quarter of the polling numbers right now, so this ‘dump-on-the-greens’ is staged at the right point, and hoping to retake three or four percent of what the Greens would have taken.
Comical in a way....this was almost thirty years ago, and suddenly some analysts come out to find it? Yeah, sure.

Pedophiles are attracted both to positions of power and authority over children, and power and authority in general. Thus they frequently form networks within governments and political parties to mutually protect each other while they explore their proclivities.
Until somebody can come up with a reliable test for these pervs, they are going to use every opportunity to try and decriminalize what they do.
In Belgium it got so bad that they had gigantic protests in the street against a government and political parties infested with pedophiles: elected and appointed officials, judges, policemen, you name it. They were seemingly everywhere. The protests came close to turning into lynch mobs.
The liberals, perverts of Hollyweird and (okay, some) libertarians will all be on board.

MediaMole - gays were targeted along with gypsies, Jews, and other so-called 'undesirables'... Germans were evil - and they were control freaks... But they were very confident they were right about everything. I see the IRS targeting conservatives and experience that action as 'Nazi-lite'. Same with the dem lies and defense of the IRS targeting a politically 'out' group. Dems do lots of 'Nazi-lite' stuff now... and more every day... We have good reason to be afraid of them.
