LANSING (WWJ) - Could this mean the end of welfare as we know it?

A bill has passed in the Michigan Senate that would require those receiving public assistance to do some “volunteer” work. Another bill, which passed the House Commerce Committee, requires drug testing, revoking benefits for welfare recipients who refuse the test or who test positive.

“What [the legislation] does, it says, in order for your to receive your cash assistance, your welfare check, you must provide some kind of community service to the community,” said the volunteer work bill’s sponsor, State Senator Joe Hune, who represents Livingston and Shiawasse counties in Mid-Michigan.

Hune says he was inspired by a constituent who began to volunteer while on welfare — and that community service evolved into full employment.

***community service to the community***

As opposed to community service to what?

Anyway, here’s a sales pitch: “You too can become President of the United States!”

Free money poisons people and makes them dependent.

Kinda like heroin! I hear it's quite popular.

Still a good start. But as you point out, what is going to be considered "community service".

If dems have their way it could be watching TV !!!

Or Organizing For Obama

The days of organizing for Obama are about over. Obama has about a year left until he SERIOUSLY becomes irrelevant. After November 2014, Obama is done....UNLESS the Democrats win a super majority in the Senate and take over the House in a huge way.....That is not happening.

If nothing else welfare recipients should have to get up every morning go down to the welfare office clock in and sit there all day. Clocking out and back in for lunch. Just like the rest of us do!!!

I agree it is a great idea, but I doubt it will pass, because the public employee unions will squawk about how using all of these volunteers reduces the need for the union jobs, puts union members out of work. If you have volunteers picking up trash or mowing in the parks, you need fewer grounds employees.

They tried that in Florida and ended up spending more for the tests than they saved in trimming the rolls. Typical government feel-good look-we’re-doing-something nonsense.

A drug addict will prostitute her children for the next hit.
You’re right - they’ll choose the drugs.

Michigan BUMP!

If this passes and survives the inevitable court challenges, it might could serve as a model law for other states.

Free money poisons people and makes them dependent. Period.

Progressives want as many dependent as possible, since they will likely vote to give themselves more money and elect RATs, communists, progressives, Marxists...but I repeat myself.

put half of them to work running day care for the other half, who are digging ditches and building roads

Unless you have missing appendages or a severe medical condition you should NOT be given money to sit on your ass

I am even against “unemployment’ insurance... I know too many people who say “eh...I’ll go on unemployment for a while” like it is some sort of paid vacation

Yup.

If nothing else, they should have to at least show up. And let’s not kid ourselves. That is pretty much all that is required of a LOT of cubicle jobs.

Need this EVERYWHERE!

Especially in WA and CO, with their legal pot.

Welfare shouldn’t support the intoxicated!

Probably true but those people are paid by a private entity (excluding Govt. employees). Not by money seized from taxpayers!!
