New York Times Europe ^ | 9/19/13 | Laurie Goodstein

SNIP Six months into his papacy, Pope Francis sent shock waves through the Roman Catholic church on Thursday with the publication of his remarks that the church had grown “obsessed” with abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues despite recriminations from critics.

You don’t believe these things because you are not Catholic. So stay not Catholic and you won’t have to worry about any of the above.

"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." - 1 Peter 3:15

I think he is barking up the wrong tree. The embrace of a more conservative, less Vatican II, papacy has been very popular except among the left and those that despise the church, always have and always will.

People look to the church for moral stability, not revolution theology, not trendy cultural fashion, nor internationalism outside of their faith.

Thus the papacy should call for greater charity from the wealthy, not higher taxes on the wealthy to supposedly benefit the poor; they should call for governments to reform and embrace the faith, and by doing so to invite prosperity, not for refugees to flee their homes and emigrate to other lands; and the papacy should have long ago learned that socialism is a dead end that causes suffering, not liberation.

This pope is a disaster. Yet what can one expect from one who follows in the footsteps (ideologically) of John XXIII and Paul VI.

Whoa! Haven't you heard that the Pope is infallible? Everything he says comes directly from the mouth of God. /sarcasm

This isn't Catholic doctrine.

"There are not more than 100 people in the world who truly hate the Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they perceive to be the Catholic Church. ....As a matter of fact, if we Catholics believed all of the untruths and lies which were said against the Church, we probably would hate the Church a thousand times more than they do." -- Abp Fulton J. Sheen

How do you square your sarcasm with the Scripture quote in the next post?

The Pope may be the anti Christ?? I have no idea, but let`s cut to the chase. The Pope is and never was Holy! There is no mention of the Pope in my Bible, that I read daily. He is and has always been just a man.

There is only one mediator between man and God, and that is Christ Jesus! We are not to pray to Mary, though she is very special no doubt, but we don’t ask Mary into our life, Mary did not die on cross for our sins

There is no purgatory , we are not to pray to man, as do so many Catholics, praying to so called “Saints”

A Saint is just a simple Christian, this whole idea about Sainting people as the Catholic Church does is simply ridiculous and NOT Scriptural

Not Catholic, but only a Christian, but time for people to see that the Catholic Church is dead, just like most/all of main line Churches

Get behind me Satan

New King James Version (NKJV)

Matthew 23:9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.

People need to look to Jesus and the Scriptures, nobody else.

The Catholic Church cant re write the Bible, though I am sure they would if they thought they could get away with it,

Jehovah`s Witness have to re write their Bible on a regular basis to keep up with the errors pointed out to them.

This idea that people might come to Christ if we would only say their sin is not sin??? Ridiculous

I am a sinner saved by Grace, The Pope is going the same way as Joel Osteen, he wont say that sin is sin.

Pressed by Larry King about 5 times, finally on the question of... is homosexuality a sin?? Joel finally can only say,,,”well it`s not God`s best”

Oprah Winfrey enjoys Joel Osteen because he wont say that her relationship with her live in boyfriend is sin.

The Bible says in the end times people will make it all up as they go along.

Listening to Father Jonathon on Fox News today was pretty pathetic.

The Bible does not play down sin, there is no reason that anybody should.

People cant be forgiven for their sins if they say their sin is not sin. And to say their sin is not sin, is to call God a liar

You want to know who the scribes and the Pharisees are? They aren't the average Catholic/Christian in the pew who tries to live their life according to the Gospel. The Pharisees are people like Cardinal Mahoney, who put on air of sanctimony, but while pretending to be "holy", they shuffle around priests who abused minors and try to cover it up. Caiaphas, Annas and the priests were the people Our Lord was talking about, not the average Jewish believer who was led astray by the Priests.

The people who have been fighting the "culture of death" need to be applauded by the Pope, not told they are "obsessed" with it. Real children are dying in abortuaries. If the Pope wants to save them, he should uphold those who do God's work in this area, and not give reasons for glee to the enemies of Christ like NARAL, who sent a personal "thank you" message to Francis yesterday. That disgusts me, and it should disgust anyone, Catholic, Christian or Jew, who has tried to uphold the right to life for all, from conception until natural death.

Father Jonathan was probably high on hallucinogenics when interviewed. I despise the limp wristed, weak priests who try to cover up for the Church instead of calling a spade a spade.

We need a St. Pius X, or a Gregory the Great. Instead we have Pope Bozo the first.

But doesn`t the average Catholic now vote Democrat, at least a small majority, according to the polls I see.

At least a majority of Catholics now vote Democrat, which means they are good with abortion and gay marriage and a liberal supreme court, which in turn means they are Not Christian

Yessir, those Catholics who vote for Obama and other pro-aborts are no longer Catholic. But the people Francis targeted weren’t those people, but the few that have remained faithful to the teaching of the Church.

"When was the last time you heard a homily on abortion, contraception or homosexual behavior?"

I can tell you that in my Catholic church, NEVER.

Lots of pleas for more $$$, and a nice homily opposing the death penalty, and oh, yeah, the St. Francis celebration where pets are blessed.

Where does the Pope see Catholic priests "obsessing" over abortion or homosexuality?

Let me know, I wouldn't mind hearing such a Mass.

Mehh ~ Once a jesuit always a jesuit, the ones who cling to their ‘liberation theology’.

This COULD BE the Harlot (Pope) that rides the Beast System (U.S.A.)

I’m very sadly amazed at my fellow FReepers who question everything out of the MSM except misquotes of Catholic clergy. Go read his words for yourself and find that he was actually saying the Gospel is bigger than narrow special interests. These areas are important but they are not the full message of salvation.
