New York Citys efforts to fire what it calls the heroin teacher received a setback this week that has Mayor Michael Bloomberg fuming.
An arbitrator earlier this year ruled that a Brooklyn high school teacher should be fired after he was arrested for bringing heroin into a courthouse while on jury duty. But a State Supreme Court judge overturned the decision, calling the firing unduly harsh and shocking to this courts sense of fairness.
Needless to say, Mr. Bloomberg was not amused.
We could not disagree more strongly with the judges decision to overturn an arbitrators ruling terminating a teacher for possessing 20 bags of heroin, the mayor said in a statement this afternoon.
The judge ruled that the termination shocks the conscience, which shows a callous indifference to the well-being of our students, he added. That truly shocks the conscience and boggles the mind.

Why would anyone be shocked by it?
Why was he shocked? Did she was it down with a Super Mega Big Gulp?
More to the point why would Hizhonor be shocked by it?
He never heard of that “rubber room” before, where teachers accused of things like being a sex predator in class, get to sit all day and still be paid.
You need to start reading FR, Mr. Mayor.
Stories like this about NY city teachers have been turning up on here regularly for over a decade.
Look for the Union label.
The Heroin Teacher can only get in trouble if he has a 44oz drink in one hand, and an AR-15 shotgun in the other.
You could bet she’d be fired if she saved kids with a gun as
Yes, yes, heroin, we know. But did he use SALT on those fries and onion rings for lunch that day?
Gotta get priorities straight, eh Bloomie?
How did he become Mayor?
Maybe it would be a good idea to check that judge’s arm.
He heard for it. He’s the one who got rid of it! I sometimes wondered what I had to do to ge ttat mini-vacation.
and why does the mayor get a say in schools? They are “independent” school districts where I live.
The infiltration of the courts by the socialist left has gotten so bad that even Bloomberg is upset by it. Now that is bad.
I’m sorry, but if they brought 20 bags of HEROIN into a courthouse, forget everything else, they are too STUPID to be teaching anyone anything.
The mayor controls the Dept of Ed in NYC ever since ... Bloomberg. Mayors have been fighting for control for decades, but he was the first to finagle it. Can’t blame them for wanting control since they always bet blamed for lousy results when they had almost no control.
sounds like he has aggrandized far too much power.
Kim Il Bloomberg of NYC
You’re not trying to impose your values again are you?
The left just can’t figure out it’s their own policies that are creating the problems. There are those that take advantage of this and dog it, drug it, knowing they won’t get fired. Same with welfare. Why work and get off drugs when you can kick back and someone else foot’s the bill.
The last time, he bribed the city council to end term limits...
Geez, don’t say “fire” around Bloomberg. He’ll think you’ve got an assault weapon.
Oh, yes...the Heroine Teacher City, where federal funding buys heroine for teachers. Bloomberg is the Mayor of that Heroine Teacher City. ;-)
I am not making excuses or defending this person but not knowing the specifics of the teachers contract, if there was not a clause in there that addresses this type of behavior than I could understand the arbiters ruling to reinstate, minus the extemporaneous drivel of course.
And if the teacher was on their own time at jury duty and stupid enough to bring this into the courtroom then they should be charged with felony possession of narcotics. Surely that would be a firing offense.
Most likely some school district administrator knew about the drug problem and didn’t provide counseling options to the teacher which most likely must be exhausted before a termination can happen.
