Senator Collins says Proposed Food Stamps Cut Too Deep

Senator Susan Collins say a proposal in Congress to slash food stamps funding would hurt Mainers who need it most.

House lawmakers passed a bill Thursday that would make around $4 billion dollars in cuts each year to the almost $80 billion dollar-a-year food stamp program.

Maine is among the top five states with the biggest share of people on food stamps at 18-percent.

Collins says the program needs to be reformed but the proposed cuts are too deep.

“We have a lot of elderly people living in rural Maine who really depend on food stamps in order to get proper nutrition. We also have a lot of children living in poor families that are also dependent on food stamps. ”

Collins predicts the Senate will reject the cuts to the food stamp program.

The cards are debit cards for cash.

Cash is cash and businesses like cash.

Say, they can track them better now with the EBT card...I’m wondering if I can lobby to get a new program started? Every time someone buys lobster to feed to their dogs, I get a lobster sent to me. Dittos for crab legs. Call it Seafood to Cyber Liberty (StCL). I’m gracious...I’m willing to accept one lobster tail for every two. I’ll pass on the shrimp, they can send those to the Humane Society.

I promise, no strip clubs or pole dancing. I will buy my own beer.

Who do I call? ;^)

Get tough with those who abuse the food stamp program by purchasing steaks and lobster then selling their card for half of its cash value to buy drugs and you will save far more than $4 billion a year.

Maine I believe. Maine was also known for all leather goods.

LL Bean, which has become despicable and the founder must be rolling is his grave, still sells some of the traditional made in Maine high quality boots. They sell as little made in the USA merchandise as possible, just enough to try to patronize disgusted customers. If they brought back more manufacturing for their business, it would be huge for the state. I really can't understand why its politicians aren't pushing for that. A lot of us customers complain about it and refuse to by their made in China crap.

Repeal the 17th! The senate was designed by the Founders to represent the states and to defend the constitution against a federal takeover! The 17th destroyed the constitutional balance of powers.

“What exactly is this doorknob saying?”

She’s saying she didn’t actually read the bill so she is just running with the first thing she pulled out of her butt.

Here on KLBJ, the local talk show station, a guy called in today and said he saw a Schwans truck with a sign that said: We accept EBT payments.

Well, let’s see. LBJ, the communist who started the war on poverty and paving the road to Hell with good intentions. The only thing that has changed since LBJ is the number, names, and methods of the the thieves.

slash food stamps funding would hurt Mainers who need it most.

Same tired old phrase from the Left (and the "news" media, who will push this false line). It's "always" the neediest who get hurt to them, not cutting off the top recipients, who most could be proven to not need the benefits.

Sounds like a Maine problem that can be fixed by raising taxes in Maine. Collins is as dumb as Pelosi. Why are the taxpayers in Wyoming and elsewhere responsible for Maine’s problems. Collins is a big GRUBM ‘T DemocRat Plantation Liberal.

"The bill's savings would be achieved by allowing states to put broad new work requirements in place for many food stamp recipients and to test applicants for drugs. The bill also would end government waivers that have allowed able-bodied adults without dependents to receive food stamps indefinitely."

So are the senior citizens drug users, Susan?
