Krauthammer: Obamacare defunding Kabuki, Kamikaze and GOP ‘will end up sushi’
The Daily Caller ^ | 9-20-2013 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 09/20/2013 4:47:26 PM PDT by servo1969

On Friday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer mocked the Republican tactic of using the budget process to defund President Barack Obama’s 2010 health care reform law.

Krauthammer called the House’s vote to defund the law “Kabuki” and warned that it would come back to haunt congressional Republicans.

“I think the Boehner speech is what you would expect,” Krauthammer said. “He didn’t want to do it. He had to do it, so he had to defend it, and that’s Kabuki. I think it’s going to go to the Senate and if we end up with a shutdown, it’s going to be Kamikaze, and the Republicans will end up sushi — very thin slices. And everybody knows this. This is sort of a charade. Cruz is going to get a lot of airtime. He’s gotten a huge amount of airtime. There is nowhere to go on this.”

He did note the law was very unpopular and was fraught with flaws, but he said the Republicans could stand in the way of defeating it.

“The irony is as I have been saying for weeks, Obamacare is so unpopular even the unions are up in arms against it,” he said. “The AFL-CIO came within a hair of calling for its repeal. Right now they want all kinds of changes, which they are not going to get. You’ve got Democrats against it. It’s about to kick in and we heard today that they don’t even have the software that will enable the system to calculate what the subsidies are after hearing that they don’t have the software to ascertain what you say is your income and thus, your subsidy. It’s true, so it’s on an honor system. This is going to be a complete disaster. We’re on the threshold of that. As Chuck indicates, the Republicans were on the upswing of the issue and now this? It’s insane and it’s not going to happen.”

The problem is that health care in the USA is run by insurance companies and it sucks. Republicans need to come up with a better system instead of just defunding Obamacare. What happens after that? They don’t have an answer. They need one.

Every pundit is plugging this into the last shutdown under Clinton and expecting the same results. Even if they are right about it, they don't deserve any credit.

The republicans lost last time because 1) they were bragging about shutting down the government and 2) they blinked when they were in the position of power.

In this case, first of all Obama is the one shutting down the government. Second, since this won't make it through the senate anyway, it is little more than a protest vote. Finally, the stupid law is hated anyway. This isn't some nebulous stand on principle no one understands by a bunch of hypocrites who don't have the principle in the first place.

“If CK is right and if the government shuts down then a worst case scenario would be the dems taking the house and holding the senate in 2014.”

Sorry to say this but, with the current crop of GOP in the House now,,,,not sure we’d notice much difference if that worst case happened

And the biggest, most intrusive insurance company is....???

Medicare. And its bastard sister, Medicaid.

No, the problem is that health care in the USA is by the federal government. And, yes, it sure as hell sucks.

I agree with you about reaching out. We should have a daily strategy thread here on FR,,or perhaps a strategy group?

I try every day to go to some very unfriendly blogs and speak the truth and invite others to listen. Sometimes I get engaged, sometimes ridiculed. What do I care? We here on FR,,personally,,each of us has to get the word OUT! WE can do this right from our homes! Let Cruz inspire us, or Reagan, or Sarah,,whoever!

We are Americans. We don’t give up!!!

I actually like Dr K. I feel I have learned much from him over time, such as,,, keep fighting!

Be PROUD when we are mocked! It’s nothing to shirk from. It’s a badge to wear. We press on no matter what. The victories add up over time....there is no reason to give up and every reason to fight!

I am sure Dr K is a fighter....and if I am to go down, it will be swinging! I won’t let my country go down, no way!

Mr. Krauthammer is an educated journalist and a respectable man in his profession, and yet he does not seem to understand the gravity of this situation as so many well paid and all overpaid politicians and staffers and DC talking heads can not understand. Obama nation care is an attack on the US Constitution and the Bill of rights and this is the reason it must be overturned as it will and already is destroying both the liberties and rights and economy of our beloved America and is making a whore out of a once great nation. The talking heads just can not see how important it is that the GOP make a stand on the defeat of Obamacare and all the evil done by it; it is indeed a hill worth fighting and dying for.

“The problem is that health care in the USA is run by insurance companies and it sucks. Republicans need to come up with a better system instead of just defunding Obamacare. What happens after that? They don’t have an answer. They need one.”

I have a friend in the health care field. His input FWIW is it is not the insurance companies fault. They are middlemen. Heck it’s not even insurance. It’s like expecting your auto insurance to cover tune-ups.

He says it is mainly two things: medicare and emergency room cost-shifting combined with spoiled Americans (yes I said it) with unrealistic expectations. Put those together with no constraints imposed by consumers and you have a recipe for disaster. The constraints must come from consumers. If no one pays and it is considered free or entitled then hospitals and medical instrument manufacturers can charge as much as they can get away with.

Now with no pre-existing conditions and ObamaCare insurance premiums must double or triple to stay afloat. The answer is every American must have skin in the game and pay for what they consume. This will bring supply vs demand in check. This would bring health-care costs down if doctors & hospitals have to compete for your business.

Families themselves must decide whether an 80 year old family member gets a quadruple bypass. Right now many people think they’re entitled to one. The family should make those decisions based on their resources and loans or whatever and not my resources ... without government and insurance companies deciding life and death matters.

No one wants to hear all this. They want some easy solution. There isn’t one ... absent a complete overhaul. Heck I would prefer it the way it used to be then ObamaCare which just makes it worse.

I could see a few legislative tweaks that are already on the table -
1. repeal ObamaCare
2. allow insurance across state lines
2. healthcare savings plans

That’s it. Government should get the hell out of the way. Republicans don’t have to propose much - just focus on how ObamaCare is making it worse. Stay focused on that one point.

It’s always sort of mystifying to hear the likes of O’Reilly, as he did tonight, bemoan the fact that “the press will play this as the Republicans have shut down the government and they’ll be slaughtered” - O’Reilly is part of the press, and a major part - why does he so doubt that what he has to say won’t register with the public as much as, say, what Piers Morgan or Wolf Blitzer peddles? - Rush Limbaugh reaches twice as many listeners every day as do NBC, CBS, and ABC newscasts - won’t this help? - to simply give up every time with the fatalistic plaint that the other side will have their say and ours is helpless is the way to permanent impotence......

Seriously! It’s like these people are being bribed or something. Would Krauthammer give up his plan for Obamacare? In light of his disability, I’m sure the answer is “hell no”.
Yet, he thinks it’s ok to railroad a disillusioned public who is begging for someone to kill this monstrous bill. I’ve stopped trying to make sense out of rich peoples out of touch opinions.

Kraut hammer, the guy who in 2008 thought Obama was a really terrific candidate and likely voters for him.

Pfffft....

At some point you need to just stand up and do what’s right for the Republic rather than be constantly tossed about by anchorless babble.

It is quite simple and EVERY republican needs to stated this again and again in EVERY news form.

“Our people are willing to fund the government just not Obamacare, where is their compromise?”

He may be right, maybe letting Obamacare wreak people’s lives is the best way to deal with this disaster.

“Krauthammer didn’t see the Reagan victories or the Tea party victories. His opinion is drivel.”

In fact Krauthammer tried to defeat Reagan. Kraut was a speechwriter for Walter Mondale.

RE :”How does sour Krauthammer taste on sushi?”

I saw that as I still DVR The Capital Gang for some reason, 1990s posterity I think.
Lots of going no-where drama .

Maybe The Kraut knows what will happen (how can he not?) and so this is intended to dampen the final stage, the finger pointing drama.

Yep, fingers will be pointing in all directions.
