One week ago, some neighbors and a construction crew spotted a young man breaking into cars near Joy and Birwood early in the morning. They say he was stealing the batteries and cutting cables.

It’s Detroit. He must have been tied to the tree for a long time before police showed up.

Nothing said about how ‘quick’ the officers came but the thought arises, if the police are properly informed but fail to timely show, at what point does something like this become unlawful detention? Just a thought.

Leave him there for a couple of days while they notify the victims.

I would make the case that anyone living in Detroit right now is the victim of unlawful detention.

In the video at the link, the reporter says the detainee was released by police because no victims came forward to accuse him.

At the end of the video report, it says the police released him because not one victim of the thefts would press charges. The reporter then muses that maybe the perp would feel bad and get a job instead of robbing people. She was not joking.

In England the police would have arrested everyone involved for violating the thief’s rights and he would already have a solicitor starting up a case against everyone on the block.

Having that happen to him at the hands of citizens might actually be more effective than jail.

If someone had just called police and done nothing, it would be little deterrent. This way he learns that the people may act.

Pretty mild as far as vigilante justice in Detroit goes.

A few years back a Detroit man took his son to a vacant lot, put him on his knees and executed him for molesting a little girl.

"No Snitching." And these stupid people wonder why they're repeatedly victims of crime? To be clear, the victims of the crime were the people whose cars were damaged (cables cut). They were not involved with tying the reprobate to the tree, thus innocent of any possible charge of "Unlawful Detainment."

I thought so, too, cripplecreek. If he still has a sense of shame, he may learn the needed lesson.

'Pretty mild as far as vigilante justice in Detroit goes."

The fact that this guy was released will do one of two things in the minds of the people that apprehended him. Both start with the question, "Why bother calling the cops?", but end up very differently.

It’s like the stocks. We should bring them back.

For sure.

I think being locked in the stocks for 24 hours in the rain and the heat of day and cold of night while people are laughing and throwing dog sh!t at you and you are p!ssing down your leg would tend to have a wonderful deterrent effect on many petty criminals.

Repeat offenders could be tied to the whipping post and given 25 lashes.

If that didn't work, there is always the "ducking stool" with extended periods of under time for proper "reflection" on one's sins.

Or (for real recalcitrants) we could just hang them like we used to do to horse thieves, bank robbers, rapists, child molesters, kidnappers, and murderers. That worked pretty well, too!
