“Al-Shabaab, an al Qaeda-linked militant group based in Somalia with ties to Nairobi’s Eastleigh district and whose most recent attack of this scale came July 2010 in Uganda’s capital, claimed responsibility for the carnage and vowed not to negotiate with Kenyan authorities.
The Mujahideen are still strong inside #Westgate Mall and still holding their ground,” the group said late Saturday via Twitter. “All praise is due to Allah!”
Francis Kimenia, secretary to the Cabinet, tweeted another 293 people got treatment at three area hospitals,
“”As we prepare to bring the world’s leaders at the United Nations next week,” Kerry said in reference to the upcoming U.N. General Assembly, “we are reminded again in tragedy of our common humanity.”
Now that’s a strong statement... I am sure the terrorists are shaking in their booths... (/sarc)
World leaders condemn terror attack at Kenya mall, pledge support
No statement from Obama, only from NSC spokesperson:
White House on Attack in Nairobi, Kenya
21 September 2013
THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary
September 21, 2013
Statement by NSC Spokesperson Caitlin Hayden on the Attack in Nairobi
The United States condemns in the strongest terms the despicable terrorist attack on innocent civilians today at the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have been killed or injured, including the American citizens who were injured and the staff of our Embassy in Kenya who were tragically affected by this attack. We also commend the courageous response by Kenyan security personnel and first responders, including the Kenyan Red Cross, who stepped forward to help their fellow citizens.
The perpetrators of this heinous act must be brought to justice, and we have offered our full support to the Kenyan Government to do so. We will continue to stand with the Kenyan people in their efforts to confront terrorism in all its forms, including the threat posed by al-Shabaab. This cowardly act against innocent civilians will not shake our resolve.
Latest — from New York Times — they couldn’t bring themselves to call Islamic terrorists what they are in the title, you have to get way into the middle of the article before that word is mentioned and near the end before Al Qaeda is mentioned...
