Last week, Starbucks asked its American customers to please not bring their guns into the coffee shop. This is part of the company's concern about customer safety and follows a ban in the summer on smoking within 25 feet of a coffee shop entrance and an earlier ruling about scalding hot coffee. After the celebrated Liebeck v McDonald's case in 1994, involving a woman who suffered third-degree burns to her thighs, Starbucks complies with the Specialty Coffee Association of America's recommendation that drinks should be served at a maximum temperature of 82C.
Although it was brave of Howard Schultz, the company's chief executive, to go even this far in a country where people are better armed and only slightly less nervy than rebel fighters in Syria, we should note that dealing with the risks of scalding and secondary smoke came well before addressing the problem of people who go armed to buy a latte. There can be no weirder order of priorities on this planet.
Talking to American friends, I always sense a kind of despair that the gun lobby is too powerful to challenge and that nothing will ever change. The same resignation was evident in President Obama's rather lifeless reaction to the Washington shooting last week. There is absolutely nothing he can do, which underscores the fact that America is in a jam and that international pressure may be one way of reducing the slaughter over the next generation. This has reached the point where it has ceased to be a domestic issue. The world cannot stand idly by.

Each generation adds to the hoard.
With what army?
What Good Can a Handgun Do Against An Army?
Well, being as we need American troops to support the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Queda in their wars against sovereign Arab states, we will need the UN Blue Helmets to intervene and confiscate guns from those American Bible thumping criminals.
Makes me happy I bought a new shotgun yesterday.
Come get em....
Henry Porter = globalist bankster shill
Come and get it, dirtbag. Bring your ‘international friends’ with you. I have my glaser slugs loaded.
Bring it Henry. I’m tired of holding back while listening to you metrosexual libtard know-it-alls. Let’s get this over with.
Chicago might reach 500 murders, Caracas might reach 4,000
You're got expensive taste in ammo. These turkeys aren't worth more than MilSurp FMJ.
Congrats on the new addition to your family.
The annual toll from firearms in the US is running at 32,000 deaths and climbing, even though the general crime rate is on a downward path (it is 40% lower than in 1980). If this perennial slaughter doesn't qualify for intercession by the UN and all relevant NGOs, it is hard to know what does
Yeah, good luck with all of that buddy.
“the second amendment right to keep and bear arms, and is derived from English common law and our 1689 Bill of Rights. We dispensed with these rights long ago”
Says it all. That’s why your a mind controlled slave who doesn’t have any rights.
Won’t Tutu Boy be disappointed!
I have to wonder if this author is deliberately trolling conservatives. Must be the only was to get people to read their sad little newspaper.
Ludicrous hyperbole. How many Americans have ready access to artillery, shoulder-fired SAMs, RPGs, and fully automatic weapons? That stuff is the norm over there; here, very much the exception.
Just another STUPID propagandist who doesn't derive their facts from the real world (unless you count that warm dark and moist nether orifice they pull them out of).
I’ll bet that Obama’s sons have robbed more Starbucks than CCP people have had shootouts in them.
Many of the people I see in Starbucks in DC are the dregs of liberal society - the hoity-toity of the yuppie set - most of whom have never done anything substantial to keep America safe from from criminals, communists, nuts, or Islamists. But they did vote for Obama.
In other words, arrogant, supposedly important drones, who wouldn’t know how to cover someone’s back in an emergency.
I’ll take a CCP person over them any day or night. Fire discipline is personal discipline, and when the shit hits the fan, you want someone next to you who knows what to do.
Not some latte’-licking liberal wuss.
That’s what the agenda has been for years.
It’s the globalist crush they perfected when they installed a UN regime in South Africa. Now they think that with an American Quisling in the WH, they can get the US. Finally.
Pfffft. “The world” can drop dead.
I’m looking at shotguns, too. Haven’t made up my mind yet.
Just read the comment section. The Guardiantards hate the NRA. haha
If you want to argue about this again then by all means, meat me at the green in Lexington.
You might not want to wear red this time. Made it all too easy the first couple times to womp your asses.
Thanks it’s a 12ga pump riot gun. Just bought a Red Dot sight for it off Amazon.
Sounds fun. I’m starting to miss living in the boonies.
I like to think of it as an Urban redecoration device. :)
"Oh, the tears of unfathomable sadness! My-yummy!"
I wonder how many of the deaths occurred in “gun-free zones”, “gun-free cities” and other Dem controlled areas?
“The world” is going to intervene, hmm? Sure thing, Sweet Pea, you lead the charge. Molon labe.
“Talking to American friends, I always sense a kind of despair that the gun lobby is too powerful to challenge and that nothing will ever change. The same resignation was evident in President Obama’s rather lifeless reaction to the Washington shooting last week.”
Hmmm. The author has been talking to the wrong kind of Americans.
So lets stop illegal aliens, they kill 40 a day, 1/2 by drunken driving, 1/2 through outright murder.
what’s out of control is... mental patients
until they start putting mental patients into mental hospitals, i’ll believe they intend for all the random shootings to happen... so they can grab for guns
hell, it’d be fairly easy to convince the American people that these people were drugged by the dems and put on their special path of crazy for the sole reason to grab guns
we had emails between the WH and holder stating as much on fast & furious... yet no one cared.
If those blue helmets from the UN forces hit the beach and invade the USA, where would you attack?
If I’m a blue beany general, I’m hitting NYC, just pull my ships right into the harbor and disembark.
With all the tories/leftists there, they’d shower us with flowers and kisses (watch out as some of the gay men might kiss you too).
DON’T DON’T DON’t land your forces in Texas. You’ll have a million rifles converging (mine included as I’d drive thru the night with my tea party borzoi loaded with ammo, gold, water and kibble).
Silly Brits...Freedom is for Americans!
1. San Pedro Sula, Honduras: Homicides: 1,143 Inhabitants: 719,447 Murder rate: 158.87
2. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico: Homicides: 1974 Inhabitants: 1,335,890 Murder rate: 147.77
3.Maceió, Brazil: Homicides: 1,564. Inhabitants: 1,156,278. Murder rate: 135.26
4. Acapulco, Mexico: Homicides: 1,029. Inhabitants: 804,412. Murder rate: 127.92.
5. Tegucigalpa, Honduras: Homicides: 1,123. Inhabitants: 1,126,534. Murder rate: 99.69.
6. Caracas, Venezuela: Homicides: 3,164. Inhabitants: 3,205,463. Murder rate: 98.71
Many list Detroit as the top U.S. city for Homicides. However, New Orleans is the top U.S. city. Homicides: 199. Inhabitants: 343,829 Murder rate: 57.88 New Orleans is ranked number 21 for cities world wide. This says that the United Nations has 20 other cities to worry about before they have anything to say about U.S. Homicides. And, we should also ask what level of gun control exists in the top cities? Would more gun control fix their homicide rates? I say, no.
Guns are not the problem. It is mental illness and the big elephant in the room: the illegal drug industry. Drug gangs are at work in all the cities having high murder rates. Maybe the United Nations could brainstorm a way to take out the profit in the illegal drug industry.
Perhaps legalization is the fix.
Legalization is not the fix. That’s just pathetic.
Caracas, Venezuela is not like that because of drugs, it is like that because it has socialists running a hope n change asylum. It is a government run by the corrupt, the inept who proudly spread their ideology of ineptitude to all sectors.
Take over those power plants/mines/factories ‘for the people’, dump those “experts” because we know that anyone can do those jobs. We’ll even hire lots of extra nobodies that aren’t needed while we are at it.
Making the populations dumber with drugs is not going to improve things.
I'm not interested enough to actually look this up, but I'm pretty sure the 32,000 figure cited includes suicides.(The suicide rate is pretty comparable between Australia, UK, Canada, and the US. It makes no difference if people here use handguns and people there jump off of bridges)
So, only about half of the deaths were even homicides to begin with, some percentage of those were justified.
Once you get down to the true number, whatever it is, I'm sure you're right that most of them occurred in heavily gun regulated areas.
Yeah, go ahead and try it, pal. Imagine if that were to happen and a coalition of leftist European countries came over here to take the guns from Americans. First of all, they’d have a full war on their hands as the military would defend the country and the Constitution. Second of all, the irony is that it would prove the NRA and gun lobby’s point that citizens should be armed to protect themselves in the event of a civil war or attack from foreign powers.
Americans hear talk of international intervention and head to the gun store. Just when you thought the ammo shortage might be over...
At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."
~Abraham Lincoln, Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois, January 27, 1838
A good read on Caracas, Venezuela by the United States Department of State:
Yes, Caracas has tremendous poverty due to a failing socialistic state. Socialist fail to learn from the failures of other systems that big government is a system doomed to fail.
What is drawing the poor to crime is the illegal drug industry. The poor will rob, steal, and kidnap to further this industry with the necessary “operating capital.” You will see this statement in the above report: “Much of Caracass crime and violence can be attributed to mobile street gangs and organized crime groups.” These gang groups are working the illegal drug industry. Venezuela is the leading drug hub of South America.
Legalization would affect the supply side of the curve. It would saturate the market and the profit would drop out. You are correct. It would increase the users and the costs due to the mental side effects would be costly. As people find out the realities of these costs, the demand should go down as knowledge increases. We will know soon enough what happens when Washington State and Colorado will soon allow pot sales.
I have been thinking that a way to destroy the illegal drug culture is to sabotage the consumer market and thus, the demand side of the curve. How do you do that? By flooding the market with consumers who are not drug addicts but people involved in sting operations. When the pusher is not certain if his customer will set in motion his arrest, the risk selling the product will be so high it will crash the system. I think todays high tech advances could facilitate such a program.
Handing out meth to 3rd graders is the answer!
I would call this article intellectual masturbation, but that would be an abuse of the word “intellectual.”
whats out of control is... mental patients

When I was growing up it was common practice to send people with mental problems to asylums for treatment. I think it was stopped during a Dem President’s admin., which led to the prevailing “homeless on the street” population we now have to deal with on a daily basis. ....Many cities are running the ‘homeless’ out of the business and tourist districts. .....At the same time, MANY of the SANE just claim to be ‘homeless’, etc., and take home hundreds of $$ every day from begging in prime areas. Don’t feed the beggars by giving them money.
The author interestingly omits the 100+ million innocent people slaughted by communist and fascist dictatorial regimes in Europe alone since the beginning of the 20th Century. The fact those regimes first confiscated privately owned weapons is a rather inconvenient truth to those who advocate what they’d like us to believe are “reasonable” restrictions.
Harry apparently doesn’t know we saw the images of unarmed, defenseless Brits cowering and tut-tutting while animalistic muslims hacked to death that soldier. A few well-placed rounds from a concealed-carry 9mm would’ve stopped those two knuckledraggers dead.
The writer should ask Nigeria, Yemen and Kenya.
Well over 200 citizens shot the last few gays.
Yeah, but the red hides blood stains really well. Blue helmets should be excellent, though, for spotting targets.
BTW, is your power out? Mine’s been out all night on the north end of Gilroy. (posting from my phone)
Well, if it came down to crazy nuts like Porter invading us, we would have automatic weapons, rpgs, and the like. Do you think the richest people in the world would somehow be unable to get those items when people from the poorest cesspools in the world can get them? But it will never come down to that, and the idiot author knows that. He’s simply engaging in his own crack-cocaine inspired dreaming of the perfect Marxist world without free, armed people i.e.Americans.
Correct term..........”self-defined intellectual”
