America is gripped by civil war if the death toll from firearms is any measure, and the international community should intervene if its policies are to be consistent. Thats the speculative premise of a Saturday polemic in The Observer by Henry Porter, a journalist specialising in liberty and civil rights.
Really. How very Orwellian. But then again, for progressives, every day is Opposite Day.
American gun use is out of control, Porters headline generalizes and concludes right from the start.
[W]hat if we no longer thought of this as just a problem for America, he asks, and, instead, viewed it as an international humanitarian crisis -- a quasi civil war, if you like, that calls for outside intervention?
As for the Second Amendment, derived from English common law and our 1689 Bill of Rights?
We dispensed with these rights long ago, but American gun owners cleave to them with the tenacity that previous generations fought to continue slavery, he proudly and insultingly proclaims, astonished that owning a gun is mostly seen as a matter of personal safety, that is, when [its] not about ludicrous macho fantasy.

I’m behind my blade of grass! Everyone Ready?
Molon labe, bay bee.
Stop U.S. gun violence? Sounds great. If they want to help us fight for unlimited concealed carry in every state, then I certainly welcome their input and assistance.
Come and git em.
They could start with the gun violence in obozo’s hometown.
Who will dis-arm the inner-city tribal parasites, who are the BULK of the problem?
I read the original article a couple of days ago. I think the haughty Brit writer was not really serious, just satirizing our penchant for intervening in other countries’ internal affairs. Never-the-less, the writer is a liberal twit like most writers for the Guardian newspaper.
Actually..that would be a GREAT idea!
have them come to chicago and let these brainiacs help Rahm!!!! Then i will sit back with popcorn to watch how they “solve” our problem.ha.
If this is ever seriously considered — History will repeat itself with blue helmets substituted for red coats. (Either one makes a fine target.)
This clueless limey should marry his boyfriend, Piers Morgan.
As Americans, we don’t need any lectures from Europe, a continent who throughout the centuries has been stained with blood as well as the origin of two world wars.
Why do they not intervene in muslim nations where suicide bombing are far more rampant? Or Somalia/Kenya, or on the “palestinians”?
That’s a big no-no. In the eyes of the left, gun crime always has to be viewed on a macro level, not a micro one. It’s always America’s gun problem...we’re never supposed to actually look at who is behind the majority of it. To do so might lead to uncomfortable conclusions.
Rust never sleeps...
Chicago murders might reach 500
Caracas might reach 4,000
How about send peacekeepers to Venezuela?
To be fair, the article is a bit tongue in cheek, at least regarding sending in the UN.
That said...bring it.
Or right there in DC.
