U.K. columnist asks if world should intervene to stop U.S. ‘gun violence

America is “gripped by civil war” if the “death toll from firearms” is any measure, and the international community should intervene if its policies are to be consistent. That’s the speculative premise of a Saturday polemic in The Observer by Henry Porter, “a journalist specialising in liberty and civil rights.”

Really. How very Orwellian. But then again, for “progressives,” every day is Opposite Day.

“American gun use is out of control,” Porter’s headline generalizes and concludes right from the start.

“[W]hat if we no longer thought of this as just a problem for America,” he asks, “and, instead, viewed it as an international humanitarian crisis -- a quasi civil war, if you like, that calls for outside intervention?”

As for the Second Amendment, “derived from English common law and our 1689 Bill of Rights”?

“We dispensed with these rights long ago, but American gun owners cleave to them with the tenacity that previous generations fought to continue slavery,” he proudly and insultingly proclaims, astonished that owning a gun “is mostly seen as a matter of personal safety,” that is, “when [it’s] not about ludicrous macho fantasy.”

Each European country thinks they’re the size of the US. You can put three Europe’s in the US with room left over. Couple of case in points - Greece = Alabama; Germany = Montana; France = Texas and so on. The US has a bit over 9 million sq. miles while Europe is a bit over 3 million sq. mi. Our Civil War encompassed an area as large as Europe.

When these pipsqueak countries pipe up about how we should do this and that to be more in-line with them is laughable.

Hmm, right - a Brit complaining about intervention in other countries. Rule Britannia and all that. He isn’t the first. One of his countrymen thought it would be a good idea to seize the guns at Concord and Lexington. For our own good, naturally.

They are writing this crap before the Nairobi mall attack is even resolved. Yeah my owning a handgun is a macho fantasy rather than the myth of self protection. They haven’t got an army big enough to go door to door which is what it would require.

If this is ever seriously considered — History will repeat itself with blue helmets substituted for red coats. (Either one makes a fine target.)

Why do I think that if such a scenario were to play out, the US Government would be allied with the blue helmets?

Specially if, as Obama has suggested, there are muslims under those blue helmets, and he stands with them.
Doesn't matter how old or how sick I am, if that time ever comes, I can't think of a better incentive to drag myself into the fray!

We will be very happy for the world to intervene to lower America’s gun violence.
We know we can lower gun violence by 3/4s, so...
just tell us to which countries we should export our minority population.

I don’t see the World intervening in Kenya, Somalia, or Syria. I think they’ve got worse problems than we do.

You’ll have to scroll through the list, and tabulate the results, then go to the FBI’s total crimes list for the U.S. and get the total murders, but it’s better than nothing for a starting point.

You can also do the same for rape, and other violent crimes.

There are separate tables at other (U.N., IIRC) sources that list countries by crime rates.
