Obama: Obamacare Offers Health Insurance 'For Less Than Your Cell Phone Bill' Jeryl Bier September 23, 2013 8:01 AM
President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle attended the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Phoenix Awards Dinner at the Washington Convention Center Saturday night. While extolling the benefits of Obamacare less than 10 days before the opening of the new health insurance marketplaces, the president said that "you can offer your family the security of health care ... for less than your cell phone bill."
The president was referring to a tweeted claim made earlier this week by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius that said, "Nearly 6 in 10 uninsured Americans will #GetCovered for less than $100/month starting Jan 1." As noted at the time, Sebelius's claim was based on a press release from HHS that said that six in ten uninsured "may be able to get coverage" for less than $100 per month, a claim that looked even more dubious under closer examination.
The president repeated Sebelius's comment that "6 in 10 will be able to get coverage for less than 100 bucks a month;" and said [emphasis added]:
We cant rest until every American knows the security of quality, affordable health care. (Applause.) In just over a week, thanks to the Affordable Care Act and the leadership shown by the CBC and others in Congress -- so many of you fought to pass this law -- thanks to your efforts, 6 in 10 uninsured Americans will finally be able to get covered for less than $100 a month. Everybody is going to be able to get coverage; 6 in 10 will be able to get coverage for less than 100 bucks a month. (Applause.) And by the way, the only reason it's 6 in 10 is because we've got some governors who -- (laughter) -- haven't seen the light yet. If every governor chose to join this project rather than to fight it just to score some political points, that number would be nearly eight in 10. (Applause.)
So just think about that. Knowing you can offer your family the security of health care - thats priceless. And now you can do it for less than your cell phone bill. Thats what change looks like. (Applause.)
Remarkably, this is not the first time the president has made the claim. At the end of August, President Obama was interviewed by Tom Joyner and Sybil Wilkes of the Tom Joyner Morning Show and said:
Anybody who doesnt have health insurance in this country is going to be able to get it at an affordable rate, and we were just talking with some folks earlier about the fact that for a lot of people itll be cheaper than your cellphone bill.
According to a JD Power report in 2012, the average individual's cellphone bill is $71 per month.
You peasants..........
When I pick up my cell phone it works.
Hmmm....some of us have VERY LARGE cell phone bills.
It's a huge opening for the GOP to show exactly what you can get for $100/month.
In my state, it's a $10,000 deductible for a policy that costs about $100/month. And that's for a single woman in her 20's.
If someone thinks they will be able to get routine medical care and prescription coverage, they will be disappointed.
Less than $20 a month?
I’ll take two!!
Mine is $18 a month. LOL, I’m all over that.
Well somebody has to pay for the free ones.
Mines less than $7, I don’t need it much so the $20 every three month Virgin plan is fine.
maybe he really is too stupid to know?
...And a lot of 0bama supporters have FREE phones (which the 53% of us pay for).
The difference is, if I don’t want a cell phone, I won’t pay a penalty every year.
I have much more control over my cell phone now than I do over my health care. and that’s the point.
Huey Long would be proud.
soooo free for your peeps.....
Hmmm. I wonder what he told the Congressional White Caucus.
Yeah. Like I’m going to believe that. Not only does that statement fly in the face of common sense (if it sounds too good to be true...)... But lets look at the record of the guy making it. Oh never mind, I dont have the time to list even a fraction of obama’s lies here. It is a safe bet that when obama’s lips are moving, he’s lying. He’s been flappin’ his gums an awful lot over bammy-care. He really wants it, bad. Of course, he wants it for everyone else. Himself, Congress, select friends etc are for some reason exempt from the wonderful pile of goodness known as obamacare. Now why is that ya think?
“And it won’t cost you one thin dime” chortle, smirk and stifle sardonic laugh. It’s not a lie if it’s going to cost you thousands upon thousands of thin dimes.
We use ours a bit. TracFone family plan, 2 phones, $18 with tax. Husband gets 150 minutes a month, I get 120 minutes. Works for us. We may go the smart phone route after the house is paid off, we’ll see. It’s so hard to justify the cost. I know you understand!
