House Republicans say they’ll act on immigration reform this year

House Republicans intensified their outreach to Latino groups last week, offering renewed pledges that the House will deal with immigration reform this year. The effort has revived hope among advocates that a bipartisan deal can be reached to address the fate of the nation’s 11 million undocumented workers and students.

The chances of a comprehensive deal passing Congress remain doubtful, advocates cautioned, and they worry that the legislative process will spill into 2014, presenting new complications in a year when lawmakers face reelection battles.

But they were encouraged by signals from key GOP leaders that the House is willing to move forward on legislation that could produce a breakthrough in the stalled negotiations.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) said Thursday that his panel is working on four new pieces of legislation dealing with border-control laws. He did not disclose details but emphasized the need to resolve the status of people living in the country illegally.

“We want to do immigration reform right,” Goodlatte told about 70 Hispanic leaders during a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill, adding that he hopes the House can begin considering bills next month.

His remarks boosted the spirits of advocates who have become increasingly fretful that Republicans have been dragging out the process in an effort to kill momentum for a deal.

All that is needed is to repeal three immigration laws—anchor baby citizenship, chain migration and the immigration lottery—and to vigorously enforce the remainder.

This appears to be a waCOMpost diversion to spur GOP infighting by twisting what is just committee talk into an exaggerated headline about an immigration bill only with the objective of getting the conservative base enraged and distracted.

You appear to be CONCERNED. Are you CONCERNED?

Special interests running the show up there in the District of Corruption.
The House Senate conference is where Bammy and his HARD LEFT party get what they want. If the GOP were smart - and they don't call it the stupid party for nothing - they will not bring the bill up for a vote.

"Incredible! Don’t the Reps care that this will create a brand new voting block for the Dems?"

I don't think we should ignore the motives of Republican consultants advising Congressional members here- consultants (especially those who are never held accountable for losses) would love to have as many "purple" districts and states across the land as possible. Why? Because it creates more of a "need"... for consultants to "help" with their expensive advice.

The GOP should propose this as an opening offer: a green card and path to citizenship for every valedictorian in return for a fast track to deportation for every drug mule. It doesn't have to be those exact words, just the similar idea that the most desirable will get amnesty in return for the deportation of the least desirable. The deportations and border security need to come before amnesty. Last time, we gave real amnesty in return for promises of actual border security. This time, we need demonstrated border security and deportations of undesirables in return for promises of amnesty.

The Brown KKK lobby will then scream loud enough to send the GOP plan into retreat for at least another year. The unstated policy of the open borders lobby is that you can't deport anyone.

“All that is needed is to repeal three immigration laws—anchor baby citizenship, chain migration and the immigration lottery—and to vigorously enforce the remainder.”

And one other thing — the House GOP can restore funding for the 700 mile border fence that was passed in 2006 and is now the LAW OF THE LAND. The reason we don’t have it is that in 2007 when Dems got control of the House, they DEFUNDED IT!!

The pussys running the House GOP leadership have had control now since 2011, and have never made one move toward restoring this funding. Yet they talk about passing new immigration laws and stronger border enforcement, blah blah blah. Before anything else gets passed, we need to demand that they fund what’s already on the books. If they are not willing to do that, then we know they are not serious about this issue.

What, defunding legislation they didn’t like? I thought only heathens like Ted Cruz suggested such things!

Of course, you’re entirely right.

If not, it’s intractable.

Requiring valid social security number for work, renting, buying a home, going to any school, admission to the hospital,...etc. would certainly help.

Illegals steal valid social security numbers.

The Feds look the other way when multiple people use the same SSN.
