Kenyan security forces, including commando teams and military helicopters, launched a "final assault" on the luxury shopping mall in Nairobi where a group of armed militants were holding around 30 hostages.
As night fell in the Kenyan capital a huge blast reverberated around the Westgate mall, where the attackers – thought to be members of the Somali jihadist group al-Shabaab – had been holed up since shooting their way into the shopping centre on Saturday afternoon.
Two hours later the Kenyan defence forces tweeted that they had rescued most of the hostages and secured most of the mall. Four soldiers were reported to have been injured during the operation and taken to hospital.
Heavy and sustained gunfire was heard from the mall for about five minutes early on Monday morning, a Reuters witness reported. The blast of gunfire was followed by a lull, and then a series of small, sporadic explosions.
Kenya's military had earlier said on its Twitter feed it was making every effort to bring the siege "to a speedy conclusion".
The carnage in and around the four-storey building, where heavily armed fighters opened fire on weekend shoppers on Saturday, claimed at least 68 lives with 175 people injured. That toll, which rose steadily throughout Sunday, was expected to climb higher.
Kenya's president, Uhuru Kenyatta, who lost a nephew in the attack, promised to punish those behind it "swiftly and painfully", and said Kenya "would not relent on the war on terror".
Barack Obama called Kenyatta to offer condolences and US support in bringing the perpetrators to justice .

Exactly what I was thinking as I was reading the preceding sentence in your post.
I think the noise was the security forces blasting through the roof. However, now it looks as if the building may be on fire.
A question I have asked myself over the years is “Why hasn’t it happened here?”
I suspect part of the reason is that we as a society are very well armed. But that doesn’t really answer the question.

It is illegal in Kenya to own any type of firearm without a valid gun ownership license as spelled out under the Firearms Act (Cap. 114) Laws of Kenya. Anyone who is 12 years or older can apply to privately own a gun. However, such persons must provide in writing to the Chief Licensing Officer (CLO) stating genuine reason(s) for their need to privately own and carry a firearm. It remains at the discretion of the CLO to make a decision to award, deny or revoke a gun ownership license based on the reason(s) given. Anyone seeking to hold a gun license must pass the most stringent of background checks that probes into their past and present criminal, mental health and well as domestic violence records. Failure to pass one of these checks automatically bars one from being permitted to own a firearm. These checks are regularly repeated and must be continually passed for anyone to continue holding the gun license. Failure to pass any of these checks at any stage, means an automatic and immediate revocation of the issued license. Once licensed to own a gun, no permit is required in order to carry around a concealed firearm.

It would be exactly the same. There were about 25 attackers in Kenya, armed with explosives and weapons, and they fanned out in teams on each floor and struck at once.
You might get one or two of them, but it’s not going to make a huge difference, because most people in the mall won’t be armed. BTW, there were many children at the mall on Saturday because there was a children’s “Master Chef” cooking show being filmed there. And that’s pretty much what you’re going to get at a mall: women and children, out of town visitors, etc.
The only way to stop this is to outlaw the practice of Islam in the US, shut down all mosques and other Islamic nests, deport all foreign-born Muslims and make sure the others are essentially quarantined, and throw all supporters of things like the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR, etc. in jail. Perhaps I exaggerate a bit, but until organized Islam starts feeling repercussions from the behavior of their pet jihadis, there won’t be any change. They’re allowed to get away scot-free.
But the problem with doing all that, I guess, is that then Joe Biden would become president. Oh well, he could hardly be any worse, and I don’t think he’s become a Muslim (yet).

Part of it is that we're armed. Part of it is that they do NOT want to shift public opinion in the US into a generalized hatred of Muslims. They want to intimidate the government into adopting certain measures, using the threat of more attacks.
Visualize the effect on the Muslim world if the US populace started to hate Muslims in general, to the level where if Kenyans started killing Muslims, the general reaction here might be "Good! They had it coming!"
If the US had not intervened in Bosnia during the Clinton years, the Serbs might just have done an ethnic cleansing. The only thing stopping such in some parts of the world, is concern that the US would be very displeased.
There are still relatively few CCW holders compared to the population at large. A handgun might enable you to fight your way to safety against heavily armed terrorist Muslims.

A side effect of Obama's running down the US is that pretty soon no one will care what the US government thinks. It's becoming that way both internationally and domestically.
